I'm a fan of a lot of different things, but I tend to get stuck in 1-2 interests at a time. One day I may be mostly posting about How to Train Your Dragon or liking something about One Piece, and then I'm caught up in the Sonic the Hedgehog black hole for the next 4 months.

Legend of Zelda

Golden Blooms (tumblr): Written for the Hero of Hyrule's 40th birthday, this fic peeks into the night before our very first adventure with him. Oneshot. ~2,000 words

(Linked Universe)

Pocket Change (#pocket change): A Wind and sorta Legend-centric Linked Universe fic. Basic plot summary is that after getting separated from the group, Wind stumbles into one of Legend's adventures. Is it ALTTP? LA? Nope! It's ALBW. Due to timey-wimey shenanigans, some other members of the Chain are able to get him the info and gear needed to pose as one of the NPCs in the game--Gramps (aka Old Man Streetpass (aka commonly theorized to be the Hero of Legend himself in baseline LOZ)).

The Hero of the Triforce: The oldest work on my account, though not the first I ever wrote. This is an LU fic written during the Sunset arc incorporating a headcanon(?) I had seen floating around. Oneshot. 999 words exactly.

HTTYD (movies)

Circles Never Stop Themselves (#circles never stop themselves) ((bonus points if you know that song)): This is a HTTYD fic incorporating a Soulmate AU mechanic similar to The Family You Choose by TunaFishChris (go read that one; its excellent). If your unfamiliar, by enacting some sort of ritual, soulmates are able to travel into each others' pasts as invisible guides/friends. In a story as defined by secrets and relationships as the first HTTYD movie, this is a game-changer. 9/? Chapters, ~17,000 words

The posting schedule for my longer one-off fics definitely reflects the fact that I get entrenched into only a few fandoms at a time. Some works I am typing out every minute I get; some I haven't looked at in like a year.

Haha, thanks! While I am definitely proud of the car, I realize I forgot to add in the reference image for it. I basically just found this while searching for screenshots online and painted on top of it. Still really proud of it, but doing it this way really gave me a boost when it came to lighting and angles

Also, the reason he’s spin dashing is because, like I said in the tags, I don’t actually have Crossworlds. I just play the demo on repeat. So, I’m decently familiar with a lot of the main four’s animations, and Sonic will sometimes spin dash during drifts. Simpler than trying to draw him in the car and it has some backing, the choice seemed obvious

I sometimes scroll all the way back through the baby tails tag because it gives me a quick shot of pure happiness every time, and I got the impression that de-aging seemed to be part of the original concept. It got me thinking, how did the two meet in this AU?

yeah the original idea was that tails got turned into a baby somehow, but later i decided that sonic just found tails later on + tails was much younger. i think if i stuck with the de-aging think, it wouldve ended up feeling more like “we gotta get him turned back to normal” than just a slice of life au (at least thats what it wouldve felt like to me lol)

as for how they met, probably just the canon story. sonic chasing off people being mean to tails and that ending in sonic deciding that this is his kid now, laws be damned

Chapter 6: Triggered Memories

Movie nights are a fun, time-honored tradition. A great way to unwind at the end of a long day, and not at all traumatizing.

. . . right?

Story Summary

Tom and Maddie had their work cut out for them when they decided to adopt three traumatized alien children. By curious happenstance, all three had been isolated and forced to fend for themselves due to circumstances outside their control. However, Tails presented a unique challenge.

While Sonic and Knuckles' circumstances were no less tragic, they spent a few years under the guardianship of someone who loved them. They had memories of being cared for, of receiving instruction on how to navigate the world. Tails had no such memories, and essentially raised himself. The differences between their youngest and his older brothers are subtle and pose challenges, but they’re all committed to helping Tails understand he’s loved and a member of the family.

How Many Times Did Villains in AOSTH Say Tails' Name?

Out of curiosity and a bit of a hunch, I went through the transcripts on the Sonic Wiki to count.

Guidelines:

I included side-villains like Mama Robotnik and Breezie in that one episode, but only when they actually were antagonists. So, as soon as Breezie switched sides or MacHopper wasn't being mind-controlled, they did not count. Da Bearz, much to my surprise, ended up not factoring in at all because anytime they were antagonists, they said "Tails", meaning Grounder, and they only properly referred to the fox when they weren't antagonists.

Also, flashbacks to previous instances do not count, though I did try to mark them when I saw them. The same is for any other insult lobbed at Tails that I happened to notice, like "fox brat" or "pipsqueak". I wasn't rigorously keeping an eye out for those, so the notes are just a sample.

Total in 65 episodes + Pilot + Christmas Blast: 52

Average: ~0.8 times per episode

Median: 0

Maximum: 6 times in one episode (happened once)

Minimum: 0 times (happened in 44 episodes plus pilot and Christmas Special)

I wrote a stream-of-consciousness post to go along with this one, and as I wrote it, something peaked my curiosity. A comparison. Just to prove how weird these numbers are.

So, here are the amount of times Robotnik, Scratch, and Grounder said Robotnik Junior's name in the 3 episodes he appeared in:

Robotnik: 17 times. 14 in the first episode, 3 in the second (+1 flashback in the clipshow) Scratch: 6 times. 4 in the first, 2 in the second Grounder: 2 times, both in the first episode. Total: 25

This is just these three. No Sonic, Tails, Breezie, or anyone else is included here.

If that comparison doesn't say it all I don't know what will. Again, Junior appeared in 3 episodes. Tails appeared in 66. Even if he wasn't the main focus in most stories, he had fun moments, important plot contributions, and days in the limelight scattered throughout the series.

Oh yeah, and he appeared in 65 episodes + Christmas Blast + the Unaired Pilot.

Let's just stick to the episodes, for clarity and fun. Take Junior's average (around 8) and apply that to Tails and you get

As I’m writing Flying Freaks, I’m realizing that if it had actually been an episode of AOSTH or another cartoon, it could’ve potentially worked as a backdoor pilot. A group of kidnapped, outcast aliens forced to be part of an intergalactic circus/zoo mutinying against their captor and going on a seasons-long journey to find everyone’s rightful homes. Feat. a vessel full of bonding, angst, chaos, and tearful goodbyes along the way. I honestly think that concept has the chance of being a kickass space western or Star Trek-style adventure

So this is a bit of a companion to this post because I really wanted to share my thoughts on the whole thing. Very, very long stream of consciousness below:

When I was writing Brain Freeze, I had a lot of fun playing with what the villains would call Tails, and the point ended up being that they did not see Tails as his own person. When referring to him, they often called him "Sonic's little buddy" or "his (Sonic's) friend." In the episode where he was mind controlled (Brain Freeze's basis), he got to be "our two-tailed friend." They definitely don't use such possessive language every time, but it happens enough to feel prevalent. Heck, in the first episode where Robotnik says his name (High Stakes Sonic), he only says it once, but Tails is referred to as Sonic's sidekick at least three times.

As I started working on this little project, part of me began to wonder if this was at all intentional. I don't think Scratch and Grounder knew Tails' name for the flashback section of the first episode, so I'll give them a pass. But, since then? They see him all the time. When one of them says "the fox" or "the brat" everyone knows exactly who their talking about. The first instance of all four of them saying it (The Trail of the Missing Tails) is because they just heard he was kidnapped by someone else and echoed the name in shock. The next time Scratch says it is when Sonic and Tails break out and he's spreading the news. Up until maybe Pseudo Sonic / Tails in Charge, it feels like they say his real name when they are taken off guard or when they are using him/his name for something, like with Da Bearz. It's just so consistent. So, at least for the early stretch of episodes, part of me thinks that they were intentionally not saying it in order to get more insults thrown in.

Then, after Pseudo Sonic, Tails In Charge, and Boogey-Mania, where the kid played an essential role in the villains' defeat, they seemed to drop his name more often with a bit more respect. There are still plenty of episodes where they don't really acknowledge him or shoe-horn him in as just a sidekick, but then there are also ones like MacHopper and The Last Resort, where they treat him a bit closer to Sonic's level. During this stretch of episodes, I began thinking I was mistaken and that the villains referred to Tails way more often than I remembered. I also thought having them do it more as the series went on was a neat little continuity detail.

This peaked in Ep: 39 Tails Prevails, where he shows off his intellect and potential as an inventor. Von Schlimmer believes him perfectly capable of building a machine that could capture Robotnik, and Robotnik believes he could build one to capture Sonic. This episode feels like it is part of an arc where Tails becomes more and more competent and respected by his enemies.

Instead, other than 1 instance in Mass Transit Trouble, no villain says his name again until Episode 59. TWENTY EPISODES LATER. AND THEY SAY IT ONCE. They also don't refer to him by insults that often anymore, and when they do, it's often in a group with other characters.

After Ep 59: Tails' Tale (again, one of the last Tails-centric episodes and they say it once), it isn't said again, until Ep: 62 Lifestyles of the Sick and Twisted randomly throws it in 6 times. The most in the entire series, with plenty of insults and nicknames lobbed at him or flavor. Was this because it was one of the last instances of Robotnik kidnapping the fox? And he was broadcasting it on TV to an audience who may not know who the kid is?

The last instance of the villains saying Tails' name was Ep: 64 Robo-Ninjas. Scratch said it one time.

I don't know if it was a change in writers, someone forgetting about something, or a production order, but it really feels like they were trying to go somewhere with Tails' and the villains relationship, and then it just didn't happen. Something to do with Archie or SatAM, possibly? I'm pretty sure this show was meant to be a prequel to SatAM at some point in production, and they were writing these episodes extremely quickly according to TV Tropes. Maybe someone saw Tails Prevails and went "Naw, he's too young to be making flying machines." But if they had issues with AOSTH's continuity at that stage, I find it very hard to imagine they would fixate on this specific topic.

A little, tiny part of me is trying to build conspiracy theories about crazy internal mandates on Tails' character or production of this show, but I know I'm taking it too seriously. This is Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog we're talking about here.

I simply find this little quirk of writing to be interesting on a characterization front, and it's quite unique within Sonic shows. Boom!Eggman and his minions had no noticeable issues when it came to acknowledging Sonic's friends, including Tails. I haven't fully watched Sonic X, Prime, or SatAM yet, but from my understanding, Eggman/Robotnik either gave Tails about equal priority to the other side characters or was just not given the chance to interact with him that often. And in Prime, when the Eggman Council was given the opportunity to talk to Nine, he quickly became a massive issue.

And I really do want to nail this one point home: the villains not referring to Tails by name would not be noteworthy if he wasn't in every episode or if they didn't realize he could beat them. But he is in every episode and he's proven himself capable on multiple occasions. The antagonists in this show may be stupid, but mathematically it just makes no sense that they don't say his name that often. And I can prove it!

(This is the part where Junior is relevant)

Look at Robotnik Junior. He shows up in three episodes. One is his origin story, the other is his love story with his (sister/)wife Breezie, and the third is a minor role in the clipshow episode. I am kinda cheating since he was not Robotnik's enemy for his first appearance, but I think the fact that Tails shows up in over 60 more episodes than he does balances things out.

Here is the number of times the show's villains say his name:

Robotnik: 17 times. 14 in the first episode, 3 in the second (+1 flashback in the clipshow) Scratch: 6 times. 4 in the first, 2 in the second Grounder: 2 times, both in the first episode. Total: 25

The villains say Junior's name 25 times in 3 episodes. Really, only 2. That is an average of around ~8 times per episode, compared to Tails' 0.8.

Robotnik says Junior's name almost as many times he does Tails's.

Scratch says Junior’s name 6 times. In the entire series, Grounder and Coconuts combined say Tails' name 7 times.

Junior shows up in 3 episodes, and Robotnik and his lackeys say his name in two of them.

Tails shows up in OVER 66 EPISODES, and they his name in less than half

In pretty much, every episode, Sonic’s name is said by the villains once every few minutes. Tails is right beside him, and if you took a certain sample of 5+ episodes out of context, you could easily convince yourself that he was imaginary and that no one but Sonic could perceive him
