Hey. I need a dollar a month from you and 300 of your closest friends.

It is to help me pay my mortgage. In return, I will give you something special.

Look, I’m already on my knees begging. Let’s not make it weird here.

I already had to stop taking meds. Special meds. Girly meds. I couldn’t afford them. I eat once a day. I have lights that are only on when I need them, and I do everything I can to keep my costs down.

I am job hunting, but I’m 52, a woman, trans, bisexual, and I haven’t been in the job market for about 10 years, although I’ve done direct service to over 5000 trans people and indirect services to far more over that same decade. I’ve written extensively on trans experiences, oppression, homelessness, substance abuse, and more, and had my husband not died on me I’d still be doing all of that.

I’m writing a story. It is about heroes facing an enormous evil, saving the world, girls with guns, people like the orange guy getting what they deserve, and women surviving hardship in a way that might make Angeline Jolie jealous.

It features a cast of five central characters who are European, African, Asian, Native, and Latina. There is one lesbian, two bi girls, one straight girl, and an asexual girl.

There is a sorority.

Hey. I told you. Don’t make this weird.

It’s a good story. Really. You’ll like it. It is fun to read. It will make you laugh. It will make you want to get a big ole staff.

It will entertain you.

But I need a dollar a month from 300 people to keep my home.

I’ve tugged on your heart strings and you gotta wonder if this is worth it.

In order for disabled people to receive any sort of financial assistant for their housing, food, bills, medical supplies, etc., they cannot ever have more than $2,000 of resources to their name. Ever.

It doesn’t matter what it’s for.

You’re saving up for a new wheelchair?

For college?

To put a downpayment on a house?

Hell man, you just happen to budget for once in your life so that you can have some extra money in case something bad happens?

Your benefits immediately get cut off if you’re a cent over $2,000.

And, even worse, you usually end up having to pay back every dollar the government gave you that month.

So say you get $400. If they find out you’re twenty dollars over the resource limit, you have to give them all $400 back and you undergo an investigation of your funds to see if you will continue getting money.

“What if I spend the money that day?”

Doesn’t matter. In fact, from what I can tell, people who do this are actually put under investigation for fraud.
