So I work in eye care now (surprise surprise, lmao) and I had the thought on the way home from work about what Melanie's injury would actually look like.
I'm going to give a warning at the top of the post that searching any of the terms relating to specific injuries and procedures in this post will render fairly gruesome results.
She had an open globe injury, which is when the cornea or sclera is completely pierced through, allowing the vitreous and/or aqueous fluid to escape. She used a bookbinding awl, which is about 60mm (2.3in) long, to blind herself. Most people's eyes are about 25-26mm (~0.98in) long, assuming they are roughly emmetropic. Obviously the awl will have pierced the eye through completely from front to back and then some.
Typically open globe injuries only affect the front half of the eye and so through surgical glue and potentially corneal tranplantation, the eye and some vision can be preserved. I have not personally seen the results of an injury that goes through the eye completely but i would have to assume that it would result in emergency enuleation.
Typically after this procedure a conformer would be placed and a scleral shell would be molded over it. Melanie would not want a prosthetic, due to The Eye's ability to spy through depictions of eyes. She could either have her eyelids left as they are, which would result in them sort of sagging into the empty space where her eyes once were, or she could have a permanent tarsorrhaphy performed, which would sew the lids shut and prevent debris from entering the cavity.
Tarsorrhaphy sutures are fairly small and sort of hidden between the lids so would not be visible. To get to the actual point of this post, when depicting Melanie it's most likely her eyes would appear shut in a flat or downturned line. Obviously it's up to individual interpretation but if you were unsure or wondering about specifics then I hope this was informative!
My eye is really crusty.
