AO3 finally gets a rich text comment box (Firefox extension + mobile!) 🧡
AO3 gives authors a Rich/Plain toggle in the work editor. commenters get a plain textarea: type your own HTMLtags, or go without. So I built the toggle for comment boxes too!!
What it does:
Rich/Plain toggle above every comment and reply box. including the reply boxes that load in after you click reply, and the floating reply popup in the author inbox, so keysmash essays can be answered in kind
Toolbar: bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, headings, blockquote, lists, links, clear formatting. renders live as you type, no more handwriting raw (doggin') html like its 2004
Before it submits, your comment gets cleaned down to AO3's own allowed HTML, so nothing quietly vanishes after you post
Works with Reversi and system dark mode. No flashbang at 2am
Firefox only right now (desktop + Firefox for Android). No Chrome/Edge planned for now. costs money to publish there 🥲

Kim is three names into the timeline when he notices the detective has stopped receiving. Eyes on him. Glassy. On — he checks — his mouth.
Catalogue it. Subject: Du Bois, H. Attention: absent. Gaze: fixed. Target of gaze: — he does not finish the entry. The entry is inadmissible.
He keeps reading. Steadily. His pulse is nobody's business.
And then the hand shoots out and closes around his forearm.
— he has options. twenty years of options. he could remove the hand, he could cite the hand, he could raise one eyebrow until the hand withdrew itself and filed a written apology — and instead the lieutenant sits very still, notebook up like a shield, so as not to dislodge it.
"Detective," says Kim. It comes out half a register low. They both hear it.
"You have not heard a word I've said."
"No," Harry agrees, devout, not letting go.
and the debrief continues. Proper name, Place name, Backstory stuff. in a voice the lieutenant no longer has full custody of.
meeting 3 of the day. two hours each. someone is sharing their screen and i am not perceiving it because my entire brain has been colonized by harrykim slowburn fics.
the misunderstanding that happens in most of them. THE misunderstanding. the one that has been load-bearing for 80,000 words it could be resolved with one (1) conversation. but harry's inner peanut gallery of screaming skills votes against honesty every single time, and kim has taken the emotion, noted it neatly in the little blue notebook, and filed it under "irrelevant to the case. Detective"
..so they yearn. they glance. they almost-say-it and then a body drops or the radio crackles or one of them says "we should focus" (LIAR. LIARS BOTH.)
and i'm sitting here in my third meeting nodding at a jira board thinking about harry pinning kim to a wall — ....one hand around both wrists, the other flat against the plaster by his head — and kim, composed, insufferable, going "detective, this is unprofessional" while making zero (0) attempt to move. i need harry to crowd him against that wall until the notebook hits the floor. i need the glasses fogged. i need "we should focus" whispered directly into someone's mouth from a distance of negative two centimeters. i need 80k words of repression converted into want
resolve the misunderstanding, officers. with friction. dock the ships. this is an ORDER from dispatch
"any questions from your side?" yes. one. and it is not appropriate for this call

Temporarily, dispatch says. Nobody has an until when.
Harry Du Bois is eight weeks sober. The bar with the green sign is four minutes away, and it knows the hour he walks past.

Coffee overflows across your hand.

Later, the form. Officer notified. Not agreed, not understood, not survived — only notified.
Fine. If this is paperwork, you can do paperwork.

Your mouth is open. The sentence rises: You don't get to decide I'm safer without you.

VOLITION [Impossible: Success (barely)] — Not here.
You close your mouth. You take Pryce's pen off the desk.
Your burned hand shakes once. Not enough to spoil the line.
You sign: Lt. Double-Yefreitor H. Du Bois. Full rank. Every letter the typist left out.
Then you set the pen down between you and Kim, lined up with the last blank line.
"There," you say. "Less difficult."
