Tbh I don't understand anyone who denies their favorite character's flaws and acts like they've never done anything wrong when that is like consistently the most interesting part of any character ever
Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as āproblematicā in class and our professor was like, āThatās cool, but āproblematicā doesnāt really mean anything. It means that the thing youāre describing has a problem, and in and of itself thatās not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else itās not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like youāre trying to say that this is bad, but you donāt want to say ābad.ā Is that right?ā
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the ābadā thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, āIām uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.ā
Once we stopped calling things āproblematicā and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, āthatās racistā or āthatās misogynisticā or āew capitalism grossā out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, āUhhh... Iām not sure whatās so bad?ā and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I canāt help but think of this professor being like, āGood starting point, now letās get specific.ā I think when we have to commit to saying āthatās ___ā it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever weāre claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes itās art, and it should be full of problems, because thatās what art is.

i used to spend all my time on deviantart. which (at least at the time) was set up so that you could see an art piece from 2006 and an art piece from yesterday side by side in the search results. then when DA shit itself i moved to the site thatās still cycling ādo you love the color of the skyā around. i donāt care that the timestamp is literally right there on sites like instagram and twitter and i think itās weird to care if someone likes a tweet you made two months ago. the internet is my art gallery and i can and will slap heart stickers on your decade old mona lisas, i donāt know fast paced web culture etiquette and iām not willing to learn

One of the root problems of our society is a refusal or inability by media to articulate that all those āitās gonna be an apocalypseā disasters were not disasters because we collectively did something about them.
The good news is this is actually quite correctable. I maintain my firm belief that we as humans are capable of solving almost all of our problems, when we decide to do so.
And I still think thatās going to happen. I donāt know when or how, but I do know that abandoning hope wonāt help bring it about.

Iāve been getting a lot of asks wondering how I go about picking my colors for character designs, pages, backgrounds, etc, pretty much anything about color in general, and I figured in some attempt to try to answer them all at once, hereās my attempt at a color-centric art tutorial! Iām far from an expert on the subject, and I havenāt received any formal training on the matter, so this is entirely constructed of ideas Iāve gleaned from a bunch of snippets of different peopleās advice over the years, studying other peopleās art, and experimenting on my own to create something that works for me. Nonetheless, I feel passionate about the subject, and I hope this is able to help make color āclick!ā like a key in a hole for anyone who reads it. I had to discover my key-click moment on my own through trial and error, but i donāt believe in gatekeeping advice, so hopefully I can help you skip the trouble I went through lmfao.
None of this is meant to be likeā¦ a shaming or judgmental authoritative truth of āthis is how it must always be done! anything outside of my vision is wrong and morally bad! Harrumph!!!ā Especially since this is random shit Iāve figured out on my own with no formal training. Itās more just āif you are looking for something to ease your strain, perhaps this might help you give you what you need to have an easier time!ā But most of the time I donāt even color my illustrations the way I do in this tutorial. Usually I try to balance & combine these principles with the āstandard colorsā that a scene is āsupposed to be,ā like if the ground is a concrete gray and the trees are green, Iāll keep them looking gray and green (depending on the lighting), but with the knowledge of āI want this to be a sad scene, so Iāll make the grays and greens lean heavily closer to blue, so the audience knows that itās time to be sad.ā Stuff like that. Theyāre cheat codes for strategic intent, not strict rules.
Now hopefully when it comes to covering more specific things, like how I design my characters, you guys now know the baseline foundation Iām running off of so I donāt have to explain all of this first before I get into the nitty-gritty hairs of āwhy I made this character purple and green vs why this character is blue and yellowā lmao.
Color is a hard subject to explain! Most of the color theory explanations Iāve heard primarily cover stuff like the science of reflecting light, then name drops all the famous kinds of color palettes, tells me what a cool vs warm color is, explains nothing else, and dips. Which, personally, has literally never been helpful for me when it comes to understanding why the fuck my painting should include the color blue in the shadows. Heaven forbid applying any of that shit to character design. Ough. No I had to figure that out on my own lmfao. So therefore this tutorial is more skewed towards that kind of perspective, someone who doesnāt really benefit (at least at this skill level) from the scientific cerebral shit. I want to know the why behind your creative choices!!! Tell me why the curtains must be blue!! Thatās whatās important to me on a practical level. Dont get me wrong, Iām sure one day Iāll learn the purpose behind the scientific stuff, Iām sure thereās a reason behind it, but youāve gotta figure out how to take the first steps at all to begin with before I can get to the master level stuff of likeā¦ā¦ā¦scientifically understanding how bounce light works. And if we donāt understand why the curtains are blue, I donāt think weāre gonna get why the bounce light should be blue, too. So I wanted to explain it!!! I wanted to cover it!! Because Iāve never seen it explained before!!! And itās important to know the why!!!

stop. analyse that text through the lens of its author's intentions and original historical context. okay now take the author out back and kill them dead and analyse that text as though it were published by your mutual yesterday and is in direct conversation with the contemporary discourse that's most relevant to your life. okay now pick your favorite angle of interpretation and come up with the strongest possible argument against it. now imagine that the text is your best friend and that it means you well and that you naturally give it every benefit of the doubt because you're on its side and you want the best for it. now imagine that the text wants you dead and it'll eat you if you don't eat it first. now pretend that you found this text locked away in a cave with no evidence of when or where it came from and you have to divine its meaning solely through its internal coherence and nothing else. okay now address the elephant in the room aspect of the text you've been ignoring because you find it boring or confusing or uncomfortable and become the number one expert on it. now spend forty minutes assigning all the characters dnd classes with at least three sentences of reasoning each. okay now do the cha cha slide.

For everyone who āused to love readingā but now hasnāt finished a book in years, you CAN get it back. Genuinely start bringing a book (preferably short and either fiction or a non fiction topic you already really enjoy) everywhere you go and when you have 5-20 mins waiting for the bus or at the doctors office or mechanic or whatever, get out your book and read it! You donāt have to finish it quickly or even read it often but it is so good for your brain and fun to get into the habit of reading more (and replacing being on your phone for those moments).
