I think a lot about the way everything kris wears in the light world is hand-me-downs from their brother. being pushed into a very masculine style of dress (albeit, likely not intentionally by toriel, so much as their refusal to put their foot down or stick up for themself). I find it very interesting how some people walked away from chapter 5 and seemed to think that Ralsei wanted to obey the prophecy, that refusing to use their fire magic was because they wanted to play out their role, when to me, the text makes it very obvious that he clearly does not want the prophecy to come to pass.

The best way i can explain it is that the prophecy is like a highly strict or abusive parent to Ralsei. He wants to resist it, to avoid it, but he also knows (or at least thinks he knows) that if he steps too far out of line, then dire consequences could happen.

He will refuse to use fire magic because the prophecy always outlines him as having it. They'll show their real face instead of hiding in the cloak. But something like, say, refusing to be the "Prince in Deepest Dark" entirely? That's too much for them.

They want to change the prophecy with kindness so that the tragedy may not come to pass, but they can't imagine a world where their life isn't governed by it.

Crucially, their desire to change the Prophecy seems to be driven by the desire to spare Kris and Susie its dark fate. They may want the Prophecy to change for their sake, but they're still struggling to accept that *they* deserve their own happy ending, too.

Other peoples' indignation or sadness over your transition is not your burden to bear, and other peoples' expectations for you are not moral obligations you must fulfill. In 1997 Amelia’s daughter, Mary Moran, and other members of the Moran family were invited to Sierra Leone, West Africa, where they were welcomed in Freetown by Sierra Leone’s President and then flown by helicopter to the country’s interior. There, in the small village of Senehun Ngola, Mary and Bendu Jabati met and sang this song together for the first time. Years earlier, Bendu’s grandmother had told her that this song, which had been passed down in her village from mother to daughter for centuries, would one day reunite her to long-lost relatives.

In addition to finding out where in Africa her ancestors were abducted into slavery, Mary Moran discovered the meaning of the Mende song: a processional hymn for the final farewell to the spirit, it was sung in Senehun Ngola by women as they prepared the body of a loved one for burial.

I was really fascinated to learn that the song was originally recorded by none other than Lorenzo Dow Turner, the founder of Gullah studies. Gullah was dismissed (by white people) as a nonsense language until a Black linguist trained on Old and Middle English came along in the early 20th century, and I love him.
