I think people forget that Kara was executed for attempted murder, not magic. Even if she hadnβt had magic she wouldβve been executed. Bc she tried to kill the king.
Also, Arthur gave her an opportunity to talk reasonably and she straight up refused. She stuck to her guns and had to deal with the consequences.
This is honestly such an oversimplification of what happened that it completely ignores the episode.
First of all, "Kara was executed for attempted murder, not magic" is only true if you deliberately erase all of the context surrounding why she was in that position to begin with.
Kara is a Druid. She belongs to a people who have spent decades being hunted, imprisoned and slaughtered by Camelot because of Uther's anti-magic regimeβa regime Arthur has continued. By the time we meet her, she's lived her entire life as a fugitive. She has every reason to see Camelot as the enemy because Camelot has been the enemy for her entire life.
Arthur and the knights don't find Kara wandering around looking for him to kill him. They track her down after she's already been injured. She's alone, exhausted, bleeding, hiding in a cave. Arthur arrives in full armour with armed knights. She's cornered. There is no escape. There is no equal fight. There is no premeditated assassination plot where Kara set out to murder the king. She's a hunted woman backed into a corner by the people who have spent years hunting people like her.
She lashes out with a knife when she's surrounded.
Calling that "attempted murder" as though it's equivalent to someone calmly planning and carrying out an assassination is such a bizarre way to describe what actually happens on screen. It's a desperate act from someone who has literally been cornered.
Then she's arrested.
She stuck to her guns and had to deal with the consequences.
...Did we watch the same scene?
Kara is calm for the entire trial. She doesn't scream. She doesn't throw insults. She doesn't fight the guards. She doesn't beg for her life. She doesn't even deny who she is.
She explains exactly why she feels the way she does.
She tells Arthur that people like her have been persecuted for years. She tells him she fights for freedom. She tells him she fights for the right to exist. She tells him she does not believe resisting an oppressive king is a crime.
Arthur doesn't actually engage with any of that.
His entire position is essentially, "Say you're sorry, admit you were wrong, and maybe I'll spare you."
But why would she apologise for resisting the very regime that has spent decades killing people like her? From Kara's perspective, she'd be admitting that her people's oppression was justified. She refuses because she genuinely believes she's done nothing morally wrong.
And then Arthur sentences her to death.
This is the part people always leave out: the episode does not present Arthur's decision as correct.
Merlin repeatedly argues for mercy.
Mordred begs Arthur to spare her.
Arthur ignores both of them.
Kara is executed.
Mordred loses the last person he loves because Arthur chooses execution over compassion.
That decision is literally the turning point that pushes Mordred away from Camelot and into Morgana's arms. Kara's death is one of Arthur's great tragic failures because it proves that, despite all his promises of building a better kingdom, he still cannot separate justice from vengeance when it comes to people associated with magic.
If the writers wanted us to think, "Well, she attempted murder, therefore Arthur obviously made the right choice," then the entire rest of Series 5 makes absolutely no sense. Her execution isn't framed as justice. It's framed as a catastrophic mistake that seals Arthur's fate.
So no, I don't agree with reducing Kara's story to "she tried to kill the king and faced the consequences."
She was a Druid who had lived under lifelong persecution. She was hunted down while injured and cornered by armed men. She defended herself when escape was impossible. She was captured, refused to renounce the beliefs she'd formed through a lifetime of oppression, and Arthur chose execution over mercy despite being urged not to.
That's what actually happened. Reducing all of that to "attempted murder" strips away literally everything the episode is trying to say.
You know, I'm gonna come out and say it: the characters trailer for Snezhnaya was mid. I'm (not) sorry, the female designs are slop. Almost all of them have the miniskirt and detatched sleeves combo.
There is one that doesn't even have a miniskirt, her panties just seem to be out
I can't judge the Tsaritsa so far, because we genuinely saw three different designs for her, so I have no idea which one will be playable.
I can judge however how her motive to go against the heavenly principles seems to have gone from "They killed the love of my life" to "They killed my child" and how most comments I have seen on the matter is "Oh it's gonna be so cool to see the rage of a mother", well to that I say that I could not give less of a damn. We could have had the reserve of a frigded wife trope with this one and instead it seems like we are bound to a motherhood slop plot. I don't care about it (but I will give the benefit of the doubt since we see Ronova cut the corner of a photo and in that corner there was probably the Tsaritsa's husband, so her motive can still be the fact that they killed the love of her life).
Having said that, the male designs slap (like always basically), they actually look like they belong in a snowy climate (giving miniskirts in what is basically Russia, I hate you Hoyo, this is basically the Sumeru skin problem all over again) and while they'll probably have reoccuring design choices (like the high boots and stuff like that) at least they won't look like they were made to be sold to horny teenagers and gooners adults.
So, in the end, I'll probably just skip this character roster in basically its entirety except for the guy with the black fur outfit (IF I have the pulls for him, since it looks like we're getting less and less F2P pulls).
Incredible job at killing the hype Hoyo, nobody does it like you βοΈ.
Scratch, you can't run from the call of dad. Caine is actively sprinting at you
Also, the temptation to name this au Raising Caine- asefsdfaw

reminder to worldbuilders: don't get caught up in things that aren't important to the story you're writing, like plot and characters! instead, try to focus on what readers actually care about: detailed plate tectonics
@dragonpyre any chance you could elaborate on this
I grew up learning about land formations. Seeing fictional maps that donβt follow the logic and science of them makes me upset
What are the most common sins youβve seen relating to this? I wanna know
Mordor.
Why is the mountain range square. How did the mountain range form. Why is there one singular volcano in the center. Why does it act like a composite volcano but have magma that acts like itβs from a shield. If itβs hotspot based volcanic activity why is there only one volcano.
And then the misty mountains!!!! Why isnβt there a rain shadow!! And why is there a FOREST where the rain shadow should be!!!!!!!!
So what is a rain shadow?
Wind blows clouds in from the sea, but mountains are so tall the clouds can't get past 'em, so you get deserts on the windward side of mountain ranges because clouds can't get there to water the land, or do so only very rarely.
this is because, as clouds are forced upwards by rising land, they cool and dump their rain. so the side of the mountain facing the ocean (or an inland sea, or a great lake) gets all the rain as the clouds are squeezed out, and the opposite side gets nothing.
my favorite thing is the american great lake snowbelts! so, the 'flow' of weather across north america, in very general terms, blows from the northwest on down south and east to the gulf of mexico.
so the wind is blowing from west to east, and in the winter it's a dryer wind than in the summer because it's colder. but after blowing across a great lake for a hundred miles, the wind is wet again. and that wet turns into snow. so for all of these lakes, the big cities are on the west side, not the east sides, because the east sides absolutely suck to live on.
the sole exception is buffalo, NY, which literally has to be there because, unfortunately, that's where all the important canal stuff between lake ontario and lake erie is happening.
also this always strikes me as cool, check out where cleveland is:
it's right at the edge of that snowbelt. and you see way more cities west of it than east, too.
#but again. mordor looks like that becaue sauron made it#and he's an ass
On a Watsonian level, sure.
On a Doylistic level, Mordor looks like that because plate tectonics was a fringe, ludicrous, laughable theory that nobody outside serious geology nerds had ever heard of until scientists proved seafloor spreading in the early 1960s. The first edition of the LotR trilogy was published in 54-55. We literally did not know that plate tectonics was real until almost a decade after the book was published, so obviously, it was not something Tolkien could have been considering as he made his maps.
I don't know enough meteorological history to know when white people figured out about rain shadows and added it to geology classes, or what would have been taught about volcanoes and such. But any education Tolkien got on the subject would have been in childhood/adolescence; his college education focused on the liberal arts, not the sciences, and his professional study was linguistics and the middle ages. So anything Medieval and earlier European authors wrote about he had a pretty good chance of knowing about. But not much exposure to modern science. So his science knowledge was probably limited to "what English schools taught at the turn of the 20th Century."
I mean, it's true he didn't know about plate tectonics, but he did know what mountains look like, and that it's not normally That. And it wasn't his style to break that kind of norm without cause.
LotR has recurring themes of the reckless imposition of one's will on the natural world creating ugliness, an order you thought was inherently an improvement that in fact is inferior to what you have displaced. (Typified by reckless tree-felling; a reflection of the despoiling of the English countryside and the world by Progress.)
Mordor is a rectangle because Sauron is an asshole.
#the rain shadow thing otoh was undoubtedly total ignorance#but those mountains were made as the fortress of a demigod#too steeped in evil to understand beauty#it's *supposed* to look like something that Shouldn't Exist#like quite often this is something that happens in worldbuilding yes#things are arranged Wrong because a person doesn't grasp the underlying logic#but mordor is a bad example for the same reason it's an obvious one#it's So Very Wrong because it was designed to be wrong#to give you a bad feeling with how much it shouldn't look like that#if he just wanted it unapproachable on all sides it could've been in a caldera formation it didn't *need* corners#the corners were a choice#tolkien's job involved lots of looking at maps and things okay#meanwhile people whose lives revolved around the weather generally knew where the rain happened#long before it was formalized into 'rain shadow effect'#people not having The Science doesn't mean they don't have eyes and brains
I wrote an entire paper in college analyzing the geology of the Misty Mountains and to a lesser extent the White Mountains (the Misty Mountains are easier because we get a cross-section via Moria). One thing I discovered that still knocks me for a loop when I think about it is:
Moria is the only place in Middle-Earth where mithril is found, right? That's kind of a big deal. So, why? What makes that location so special? Is it just random?
I found a paper that had just been published *that year*, 2011 or 2012 as I was writing it, that studied the locations of precious-metals mines in the Pyrenees, the similarly long skinny mountain chain that divides Spain and France. This paper discovered that where there was a bend in the mountain chain, from one of the continental plates having an awkward corner in it that got subducted under the other plate, that had dug deeper into the mantle and caused precious-metal-bearing ores to flow up to the surface in ways they didn't do anywhere else in the Pyrenees.
There's a conversation in The Fellowship of the Ring where one of the hobbits -- I don't have my copy handy or I'd get the direct quote -- asks why they can see the Misty Mountains ahead of them at one point if they're still heading south from Rivendell, and it's explained that south of Caradhras (which you may recall is the surface mountain under which Moria runs) the mountain chain bends and runs southwest instead of due south for a while.
Tolkien had absolutely no way to know *why* this particular feature of a mountain range was associated with intrusions of rare and unique metal ores, but he had gone backpacking in mountains enough to know How Things Should Look.
(And as prev excellently points out, when Jirt made screwed-up geology it was very much on purpose. Mordor shouldn't be square! Mount Doom shouldn't be doing any of the things it does! A composite volcano shouldn't even have especially hot lava! Even the Gulf of Udun, the circular feature at the upper left corner of the square, shouldn't be like that -- perfectly round features should be impact craters or calderas, not The Mountains Just Do This In A Suspiciously Convenient Way. These are all the way they are because Sauron forced them to be, in defiance of the laws of nature. Remember, he's akin to Balrogs and was a Maia of AulΓ« -- he's a volcano spirit in many ways.)
Amazing work by the LoTR fandom, as always.
This also serves as an excellent example of why worldbuilding needs - more than realism - to be cohesive and work with the themes of your story.
peeling those sour rainbow gummy strips into long thin strings and putting them into cheap energy drink to create something im calling battery acid spaghetti will update once ive finished it
dont do this
I really hope its not too bad bc i actually love both components.

Welp. Google's AI horseshit has arrived. And I'm not complying. They can pry my ID out of my cold dead hands. I will simply go elsewhere. Remember folks, DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR IDs. Do not comply. Resist, fight it, use other browsers or sources beyond youtube and google controlled services. Call them. Email them. Make noise. Fight back.
I've been using Google as my main mail service since 2006, and every single account or service I've ever signed up for was made with that address. For a long time I thought it'd be impossible to divorce myself from Google.
It took less than 5 minutes to switch to a ProtonMail account, less than 2 hours to download and/or offload every byte of data from my Google account, and less than 3 days to change every single account or service I've ever signed up for to the new address.
As of today, the only single one I have that's still tied to it is YouTube. It's the only thing I'd lose access to if I deleted my Google acount entirely.
They really, really want you to believe that it's a hassle to switch to a different email system. But it's not. Most websites and/or services allow you to change the email address associated with it.
I've been using Google for almost 2 decades and it only took a few days to move everything. It's not a painful sacrifice; it's an easy change that, frankly, has absolutely been worth it.
Proton Shoutout
You can and should switch to a free, encrypted Proton email account. You also get all of the below perks. For free. There is no trick. It is paid for by the people with paying plans. I am one of them. The (completely functional) free tier is there to entice you into getting a paid account with even more perks. (It worked on me.) But there's no penalty or pressure for staying with the free account.
Also get your stuff off the google drive and put it on Proton's drive. It is encrypted. Only you with your password can access it. Not even Proton can see what you put in there.
Switch everything away from Google. It's easy and it's important. Read above, click the link for Proton, download your gmail and switch.

I love that Jimmy Olsen is exactly the type of photographer Peter Parker pretends to be. Just bat-shit insane.
Whenever someone asks Peter how he took a picture he's like "Oh! I uh-, climmed a flagpole. Totally"
And very mortal, normal-human Jimmy is like "See, Clark, is not that weird"
I mean, look at this nutjob.
The world could be ending, lava on the streets and Jimmy would be out there photographing away. No powers, no sense of self preservation. Just khakis, a camera and a dream.
I like to imagine Peter meeting Jimmy and immediately being mortified about it.
Jimmy: βand so luckily I was able to take the picture before the building collapsed on me... Superman was super pissed at me but, photographer to photographer, it was totally worth it.
Peter: Right, noβ See, this is actually my first time hearing how fucking insane that sounds. No wonder people at work look at me weird.
I want you guys to all start making a bigger stink about Tumblr's Age Verification Horseshit.
Like they tried to change Reblogs and people rightfully got up in arms, this is a LOT worse. In order to have access to any sort of thing dubbed mature, and We haveALL seen what they think is mature, Everything from a black and white photo of a black woman's arm, to posts about IUD recalls, to a nude painted by a 17th century artist, to anything involving the word Trans; you have to send your personal information to a third party site that WILL get hacked, and you will be doxxed. And they can say "Oh shit, well it wasn't us who sent your name address and gender identity to Moldovan teenagers, here's a couple extra minutes in the ball pit.
That's bad enough!!!!!!!! But the entire idea of needing permission from state authorities to access anything labeled mature by our friendly AI overlords is some fucking Boll shit. Die Gedenken Sind Frie baby. This is all a reaction to people getting uppity about their lowly lowly rights and is being propped up by the same bad actors tht have made life unlivable. Fuck that shit.
"Well it's only being rolled out in Brazil and UK" Yeah, to start. "Well they're being forced to do this by laws." YOu know it's always really funny when these tech giants (Or whatever you call owning tumblr dot com) get really antsy about laws considering they pick and choose which ones they abide by.
This is a breaking point and it's going to be very interesting to see how we proceed from here.
