go up to any comics fan and ask them which writers house they would mail pipe bombs to and they’ll list of at the bare minimum 5 different people. ask them their favorite character and you’ll be greeted with an answer followed by why every comic ever featuring that character has been literally the worst and they refuse to read it again. truly i don’t think there’s another group of people so invested in something that they truly despise to such a great degree.

It is slightly concerning to me that a number of people in the UK are not aware that the Thames has an extremely strong and dangerous undercurrent that will swiftly drown you if you attempt to swim in it. I understand that the pollution is also terrible but please know that it’s not just the pollution. It will kill you. You can’t swim in the Thames, it will drag you under no matter how strong of a swimmer you are. I’m really not trying to be the fun police here, a lot of rivers in the UK are deceptively dangerous. Even rivers that appear to be simple streams can kill you. The River Wharfe is the most dangerous river in the UK and some areas of it look like innocent streams to paddle in. Everyone who has ever set foot in it has drowned. Please y’all I’m tired. I’ve had everyone and their uncle telling me that I’m being too strict about all rivers, lakes or what have you, but my post specifically mentions both the Thames and the UK for a reason. Our rivers want to kill you.

A lot of people get shocked to hear that people die in our rivers, reservoirs, and lakes every time a heatwave hits... The first heatwave of 2026, open water swimming claimed around 10 people, and we're still finding out the count from the second. That's only during heatwaves; people die in open water in this country all times of the year, too. They aren't aware, if it isn't built to swim in, if you don't have open water swimming training, then it is extremely dangerous to swim in it.

I grew up in the west country, where open water safety was drilled into our heads in school, yet a few years ago, a group of young schoolchildren all drowned in a lake in the winter - it was tragic. Nobody expects cold shock (even in the summer, even in a heatwave), nobody expects the undercurrents of the rivers and waterways, or the sinking mud of the sea and the rivers.
