"lock in" is probably one of the most important phrases to enter the public lexicon in the 2020s
some thoughts on s1 of the handmaid's tale because it has a lot to say and I have a lot to say
Probably the aspect that is the most fascinating to me is the treatment of women (besides the handmaidens) in their society. How they are completely disrespected, feel like they're worthless because they can't have children and yet they take part in a system that heavily abuses a subgroup of them, just to fullfill some of their own desires. I find Serena such an interesting character so far and I can't wait to see what they do with her arc. She clearly does connect to June on some level and ngl the scene where she gave her the ballerina box(?) was soooo good. June has no other choice but to see it as antagonising but Serena (from what I gathered) clearly just meant it as "oh I liked this when I was younger, maybe this other woman I am around a lot also likes it" Despite taking part in the system that abuses June, she's aware that they're similar, that society treats neither of them well (one worse than the other obviously though), that they can stick together because they share certain struggles and feelings. The same happens in the "keep our child safe and I'll keep your daughter safe" scene, she knows how to get June because she feels the same.
i hope this makes sense to anyone else, it's late

obsessed with guarded characters (reluctantly) falling sleep around another character(s), showing how much they trust them to put themselves in a position of absolute vulnerability, unwavering faith that they'll be protected and guarded while they recharge, the submission of being alert unfamiliar and strange in their chest, not used to being safe or away from danger enough to get proper rest, looking years younger when they fall asleep, the other characters fiercely always nearby and keeping the quiet around for them just a little while longer
How do you know you're not Asexual? Maybe you just haven't met the right nobody.
sometimes your distress does indicate you should stop and respect your limitations. at other times it's more of a baby aquatic mammal being introduced to water for the first time thing. Too bad the difference is so hard to tell.
hey boy don't kill yourself. green's dictionary of slang is available online and allows you to explore 500 years of english vulgarity. you can search by part of speech, source, time period, etymology, and usage. there's a whole category for gay slang. they even have specific citations listed so you can see the exact context for yourself. boy did you know that in 1927 "to kneel at the altar" was slang for "to sodomize"
some other hits:
Princess: an effeminate and relatively youthful male homosexual or lesbian (1931-4)
Daffodil: effeminate young man (1925)
To throw a fuck into: to have sex with (1919)
Top sergeant: a masculine lesbian (1939) [‘she takes command of the girls’ privates’]
Lily: penis (1919)
Wolf: sexually aggressive man (1847); a homosexual top (1918)
Soul kiss: a deep kiss, involving putting one’s tongue into one’s partner’s mouth (1907)
Tom: a lesbian (1909); [in 'old tom'] prostitute catering to lesbians (1966)
Church mouse: a male homosexual who frequents crowded churches in order to fondle any potential sex partners. (1941)
Discover one's gender: to accept or acknowledge one’s homosexuality (1941) / Lose one's gender: To return to living as a heterosexual
Minty: a masculine lesbian (1941)
Also a lot of early 20th century vulgarity is recorded in Letter from My Father, which is a collection of letters published by a man who's dad was, in short, a major slut and human disaster who wrote about his sex life for his son. It's insane. You can find copies of it online & it's a wild fucking read (literally!) and I think a really interesting look at the life of a person who goes against our stereotypes of what people in the past were "supposed" to be like.
Anyways feel free to add y'all's favs to this post. & if you use this for gay historical fanfic please share with the class
#OH THIS IS EXTREMELY EXTREMELY HELPFUL#writing#resources#saving for later#maybe i should move my 1920s story from '25 to '27 because..... bro..........
note for writers: these are dated to the first time they were recorded, not necessarily to their first use. I imagine for many of these, they came about naturally through spoken language before they were written down anywhere. This is especially true of more underground slang because it's probably being recorded (in ways we still have) the least. So if you wanna use a term but it's a little off date-wise, give yourself some wiggle room.
also gonna take this moment to highlight two more i found recently:
Best boy: a sweetheart, a boyfriend, a husband. (1893) [w the obvious equivalent term 'best girl']
Honeydripper or honeydrips: a sexual partner (1917)
Like. Honeydripper?????? That's so horny I can't stop thinking about it. We need to bring THAT back
updates to miscellaneous page - added link to green's dictionary of slang
Haven’t had a chance to watch the tutorial yet, but I’m seriously considering making this for my gf’s niece
One of the commenters transcribed the pattern. (I'll update later at the computer for the text version instead of screenshots)

friend who went to bed is a type of dead wife
having being anti death penalty as one of my core beliefs is fun because it really makes me realize how even progressive people want soooooo badly for there to be a category of people they can kill. I'm sorry but "group of people okay to kill" does not exist.
i do think we should normalise being like. platonically enamoured with someone. perhaps i love and admire you dearly and there's nothing romantic about it
Anyway this disability pride month I would like to shoutout disabled folks whose creativity has suffered because of their condition. I’m talking people with hand tremors and pain that stop them from drawing, knitting, and playing instruments. People whose thinking has become so disorganized that nothing they write makes sense to other people. People with chronic pain who can no longer dance. People so over medicated in a fruitless attempt to maintain stability that the wells of their imagination have run dry.
I see you and I love you. You are more than your creative output. You are not a shell of what you used to be. You are a whole, complete person, regardless of what your creativity has been, is now, or will be in the future.

I hate hate HATE all those 2edgy 4me theories about kids shows. Like Angelica dreaming up the rugrats, or the ed, edd, and eddy children being ghosts, or literally anything that takes a lighthearted and fun kids show and has to turn it into some tragic take of rape or murder or misinformed mental illness. So you know what? From now on I’m gonna do the exact opposite. Every cool grim-dark show is now because of a bunch of children. To get us started: Game of Thrones: A middle-school DnD campaign with the most angry, vindictive DM who has promised to kill everyone’s player characters (and their family) by the end.
The Walking Dead is actually a bunch of kids playing zombie apocalypse in their neighborhood and every time someone “dies,” it’s because their parents called them home for supper.
Breaking Bad is actually just a fanfic the students in Mr. White’s class write about him because no one has any idea what he does with his free time and the running jokes about it got wildly out of hand.
