got a degree, now what? master's? doctorate?

i need it, i tell myself. i need it because it gives me the opportunity to leave.

they are willing to pay for it. they pay for it, and i leave. i study. i am out of here.

but they keep control over me, they get to choose whether i stay.

i lose it all if i dare want some distance.

so what if i got a job?

what if i earned my own keep?

what if i funded my own escape?

it terrifies me. fear of the unknown.

having my own income is my first step to freedom,

yet i find myself wanting to avoid it at all costs.

mother said that i am trying to avoid growing up,

fight, flight, freeze, fawn

but she never allowed me to grow up,

because you can't grow up without rebelling.
