Seriously what the fuck you spent money on those donate to a homeless shelter instead you fucking demons
This is more common than you may think. Many urban areas that have high homeless populations are using “defensive architecture” more and more. Sloped and divided benches to keep the homeless from sleeping on them. Spikes placed in sheltered areas where they tend to stay. City planners argue they are only trying to relocate the homeless, pushing them to see out shelters and homeless centers. But that rings hollow. They just want them out of sight. I don’t have a simple, easy solution. But this isn’t it. Making things harder for the homeless does not help them.
All these corporations have so much money to spend it on putting spikes on places where homeless people sleep yet absolutely NOTHING goes to those who are homeless. This country really doesn’t give a fuck about the well being of homeless people at all
this is heartbreaking fr .
They complain about spending money to help poor people.
But they’ll gladly spend money to hurt poor people.
The last one can be solved with pallets which a lot of the houseless folks I work with use for things like that
Images above, in order presented:
A homeless person standing in an exterior alcove, among anti-homeless spikes. He is holding a sign that reads, “what kind of society do we live in where homelessness is solved with spikes.” At his feet lies a sleeping bad and a second sign reading, “homes not spikes.”
An inverted style bench, designed to be impossible to sleep on, and uncomfortable to sit on. It is intended to be leaned against for brief periods of time. The bench is uncovered and open to the rain. Anti-sleeper bars, disguised as arm rests, also ensure that the bench is difficult or impossible to use by anyone wearing large amounts of clothing, carrying bags, carrying a child, needing a mobility aid, over a certain weight/size, etc. However, all other indications suggest it is intended to be a rest area, including trash cans and a water fountain. This suggests the bench is designed specifically to give the impression that there is accessible resting space for pedestrians and the general public, without actually providing any resting space.
A camden style bench. These concrete benches are designed to be difficult to sit on, impossible to sleep on, impossible to use for skateboarding, and polished to a smooth and easy to clean finish to limit the impact of vandalism. Like inverted benches, they give the impression of providing public rest space, but are actively hostile to use.
More anti-homeless spikes, this time underneath a highway overpass, ensuring that this common dry area protected from rain, snow and wind is not useable and forcing homeless people to risk death by exposure.
The intention of “hostile architecture” is to make places less welcoming to the homeless so that they can be “out of sight and out of mind.” This is supposed to “beautify” public spaces, and make them more welcoming.
The impact, of course, is that more homeless people die of exposure, and that anyone who isn’t homeless hates being out in public because the hostility of the design is universal. A bench that sucks for a homeless person also sucks for a pregnant person or a disabled person or someone who’s stuck waiting for their ride in the rain.
You make your city a worse place to live in, and the people who have any disposable income will put it towards not living there. If they can’t get out of town, they’ll at least stay out of public places. And that means there’s less money going into those public places, to pay for the upkeep and beautification of them.
Even by the stated goals of these absolute morons, these kinds of designs fail.
They don’t help homeless people, they don’t help people who have homes, they don’t help the municipal government.
There is only one reason for them to exist, and it’s to torture the poorest people in the city for fucking fun.
Don’t let anyone lie to you. And they will lie. They’ll say that these kinds of designs “reduce vandalism,” or “limit vagrancy.” They’ll imply that those reductions lead to an increase in people using public spaces “as intended.”
But no. The absolute amount of of “misuse” (and how cruel, to label survival as misuse of public resource, how violent that is), may go down, the the amount of “correct use” goes down further.
They’re cutting off their noses to spite their faces.
Hold them accountable. Demand that they put beautification money towards shit like making sure public water fountains and bathrooms are actually functional and properly lit, and that sidewalks and ramps are correctly paved for wheelchair access. If there’s any money left in the budget after fixing real public access issues (there won’t be), then they can use that as a homeless support slush fund.
And if you can, take faster and more aggressive action.
Pour quicksetting concrete on spikes.
Pictured: activists pouring concrete on anti-homeless spikes.
Remove anti-sleeper bars disguised as arm rests from benches.
Pictured: An activist demonstrating how anti-sleeper bars work, and how they are often disguised as arm rests.
Get some epoxy and paste pro-homeless posters to every camden-style bench you can find. (Unless you happen to be strong enough to sledgehammer an entire camden to gravel, in which case, do that).
Make sure that this shit isn’t just homeless people’s problem. Make it the city’s problem. Make it everyone’s problem.
They get away with this shit because people don’t know.
Make sure everyone knows.

can we talk about how this fucking pbs show aimed at little kids easily talked about how anxiety is stressful but normal
Ok no but can we talk about this entire episode?
It was called April 9th, and it was actually a response to the 9/11 attacks. It didn’t talk about the attacks themselves, but rather focused on teaching kids to deal with the all of the emotions that they might be feeling as a result. They set up a situation that might evoke similar emotions in children: a massive fire at the school.
Arthur’s dad was in the fire, so (as you can see above), Arthur is constantly worried about his dad’s safety.
Sue Ellen is grieving because her journal, which contained a huge amount of precious memories, was destroyed in the fire. Muffy is confused why she can’t just cheer Sue Ellen up by giving her a new journal.
Buster wasn’t at school that day, and feels confused and guilty that he isn’t sad about the fire like the other kids. He then befriends the school janitor, who has to retire due to an injury that, at his age, is pretty serious.
Binky actually saw the flames, and is constantly traumatized by the event. He doesn’t tell anyone because he feels like he would lose his tough-guy reputation if he admitted that he was scared.
The episode teaches kids that all of these emotions are perfectly normal and natural, that there’s not one right way to feel, and that even if it takes a while, things are going to be okay.
The thing that makes this show so great, in my opinion, is that it knows that kids are intellegent and strong enough to deal with these things if you present them in the right way. It doesn’t hide them, it doesn’t sugar coat them, it just presents them in a way that children can understand and shows them how to deal with them.
Arthur was a damn good show
Was? It still is :)
To be fair, considering most people talk about the older seasons they grew up with, it’s not surprising a lot of people don’t realize it’s still running.
I remember watching this episode when I was little.
So with voting do you cum when a person get bitten into or when a person is swallowed or does it depend on the moment
usually you just mark a ballot with a pen or you select the candidate you want on a screen. sometimes you hole punch the ballot though
