I've been having many many thoughts on the old Zephyr crew before everything fell apart. Pre-cloho crew!
Like we know that Marya, Comfrey, and Van showed up first, right? They were the gals that started it all (at least the website says they were founding members).
But how would you think Comfrey even knew about a girl determined to get off Scrapsylvania? Do you think she was following Comfrey's 'patreon newsletters' (for a lack of better words) as she gathered up the money and funding to build the Zephyr? Do you think Marya wrote letters to her? And Comfrey found enough gusto that the first thing she did after getting them was sail to Scrapsylvania? Or bring the finished Zephyr around?
And how about Van? Were Van and Comfrey already long-time friends? Or did she have to go in search for a living Chapman willing to ride the air? Van probably would have been her first mate, before Marya could get her footing, before meeting Daisuke, wouldn’t she?
(To be completely honest I can't remember if half of these had been revealed by plot or not but I am a-okay with not having to search the transcripts for it ahahaha)

as far as van goes, i believe its confirmed she and comfrey were close friends far before comfrey had even invented normal-air balloons, so at that point when you take into consideration van’s sailing experience (and being in love with comfrey. regardless of if thats romantic or purely platonic, she is Deeply attached), it makes sense she was fully along for the ride and willing to hop on an airship to who knows where
as for our favorite haunted woman <3, she was definitely into tinkering and mechanics far before the zephyr or comfrey came into the picture for her. i personally like to think about her wanting to fly for most of that time, maybe even fixing up an old two person fighter plane she scrounged up out of the ruins from the war, and trying her hardest to get it to a point she can fly it off the island while still mot having access to vital resources, like non-corroded metal and a reliable supply of fuel
if were taking that route (my personal favorite), i think we can just say it makes sense for comfrey to have already been in scrapsylvania for mechanic purposes, looking to try and scrap some additions to the just newly flight safe zephyr. at that point, comfrey notices a strangely out of character hustle and bustle about the scrapsylvanian port; talks about a young pilot whos supposedly taking a flight later that day through the area on a plane held together with hope and duct tape. hope is very strange for a kid in scrapsylvania
marya starts her flight going well, and then quickly realizes shell need to make an emergency landing. she has never had a not emergency landing in this thing. she lands, wrecks the plane but not any worse than shes wrecked it many times before — comfrey sees this flight and subsequent wreck happen, flown surprisingly well on such outdated and rickety equipment, and goes ‘oh shes crazy. oh i need her’
a quick tour of the zephyr and a salad later, marya is aboard and already beloved by the entire crew. old fighter plane is left to rot until some other scrapsylvanian kid decides to fix it, but marya keeps some kind of momento, some piece from the mechanics. i want to say part of the engine or something but i have nooo clue how planes work
anyways that got out of canon basis a good bit, but thats how i imagine marya and comfrey meeting :) i really do think it was just a spurr of the moment chance meeting, with them both deciding to take a chance on each other, plus i love the idea of marya already trying and failing with a plane shes scrounged together for years, doing everything right but she just doesnt have the resources to make it work
i love cloho :] interpersonal relationships are my favorite part of fiction
