one way or another - delusion, opportunism and the nature of power in send help (2026) spoilers!
my favourite thing about send help (2026) is realizing at the end that you can't trust anything you just saw.
linda is portrayed as our pov, and we operate under the assumption that we see from her is all that's happened, and are accurate representations of events, but once we reach the island, we are unwittingly watching from bradley's perspective. he sees her as this crazy survivor savant who can basically make or do anything and thus necessitating his dependence on her, and undoubtedly, she IS really a badass - she builds shelter, makes fire, hunts a fucking wild boar - but she also has access to the entire island home of a billionaire. bottled water, fruit, tools, medical supplies, high tech. without linda, bradley would have been dead in a day, but she's also the reason they aren't rescued.
liinda gaslights bradley just as she gaslights herself. this island is HER world, the world where she's the sexy one, the strong one, the survivor. the audience sees her survivor audition tape, a video she filmed in absolute earnest and sincerity. what we see on the island from linda is how she views herself.
we think linda is kind, because she's mousy and unassuming. she tells bradley she's nothing like him, that she would never do the things he does. but it's not really true, because the moment she has the opportunity, she sexually humiliates and imprisons him, delights in being cruel and giving him the same shit back. it doesn't even feel morally repugnant, because in some respect, she's punching up.
linda isn't kind. she's ambitious, she's patient, she's a strategist. ultimately, she gets everything he had: money, celebrity, respect, but is, just like nepo-baby bradley, a fraud. one way or another.
