—Jess holds her sugary coffee and croissant bag delicately with lithe fingers in one hand and her phone in the other. Between the harsh flicks of her messy (yet oddly perfect) ponytail and her staggering height, she is a presence anywhere. Even in a ridiculously crowded cafe with nearly every table taken. Pausing to tap out some message to God awful Tara who is still managing to whine about her punishment since her mum’s stupid wine cabinet was broken into, when she’s distracted by some life-threatening splutters for air. At least it must be life-threatening if they’re going to insist on coughing on her. She glances over to find a vaguely, vaguely familiar boy, laptop open and struggling with his sandwich, and with perhaps the last seat in the whole cafe left. ❝Gross.❞  She bites out, nose crinkled in distaste and her eyes narrowing ever so slightly. But without any pretense or another word she draws out the chair and takes a seat across from him. Her long legs crossed at the knee and the straw of her drink already on its way to her lips. ❝Do you really want to admit to frequently choking on things?❞ she asks without looking up, finishing up her message and pressing send before taking a slow draw on her drink’s straw.

The water in Jeff’s mouth nearly drips down his chin when he sees who has come to sit across from him. He pinches himself underneath the table to prove this moment is real. Ouch. It is. Jeff isn’t attracted to the tall blonde as much as he is intimidated by her. There is an edge and bite to her words that screams “HBIC”. He remembers all those sorts of girls from his time in high school. In his experience, they could be meaner than the boys. He coughs to get the rest of the sandwich out of his throat and adjusts his glasses nervously. Even the way she types is scary, he thinks, peering over his laptop screen to watch her dainty fingers slam against the screen. Erika would know what to say if she were here; he always let her handle conversations. She was better at it than him, which was why she was off making friends at Oberlin and he was eating lunch alone as he had been since the semester started. Well, until HBIC dropped into his booth. ❝Uh--❞ he falters, too intimidated to come up with a cool, witty answer (damn it, Erika, come back to Canada!!). ❝well, uh...it can be good for uh, if I ever needed...the Heimlich...❞ Embarrassed by his own lack of suave, he trails off, pushes his glasses up his nose again and ducks slightly behind his screen.
