why didnât gandalf just carry the ring to mordor himself with these tongs
like iâm picturing him being really careful and looking at it and carrying it exactly like this while walking or riding through the woods and across rivers and up mountains and through valleys and he doesnât drop it even once except at the very end where he tidily drops it into the volcano. frodo sam and the crew and even gollum wholly undisturbed. sauron canât find him bc of the meditative aura surrounding him which is generated by his immense focus on not dropping it
World's most tense egg and spoon race

Annatar being maia of order has an uncanny potential.
Like, imagine this fact affecting everything and I mean literally everything he does.
Casually dropping his cloak onto the nearest chair, it lands in a perfectly folded stack.
Putting his teacup on the table, accidentally forming a flawless golden ratio with the objects nearby.
Any space he inhabits eventually begins to resemble a sterile hospital room, seemingly organizing itself without effort.
Meanwhile everyone around are like "how on earth are you doing that"
Balrog: Why do I hear boss music
Based on this post
okay this is just me being genuinely curious and wondering how people think: Do some people see Sauron and Mairon as two separate entities, if so, why?
Because to me, they're the same person, just a different name. Like how regardless of what nickname you call someone, they're still *their name* (chosen or given, whichever they use). I don't see them as Jekyll/Hyde or anything like that. Mairon, to me, isn't a persona it's just another name for the same person.
Idk i'm just curious to see how everyone feels about this bc I've been seeing mixed interpretations.
Iâve been thinking about this a lot wrt how does he refer to himself in his mind? itâs all the same person inwardly for sure. in my mind his different names are related to how he is perceived, not really his identity.
none of the names seem to fit with his self-image though? I wouldnât think he still feels like âmaironâ since thatâs the name he had in the beginning, in auleâs halls. and he certainly doesnât like to be called âthe abhorredâ. annatar was just a temporary disguiseâŠ
i just donât know!
I'd say that, in his mind, he still refers to himself as Mairon - or maybe the original Valarin equivalent of that name, since Valarin was his "first language". If there is a non-lingual version that precedes it, and that we mortals could never grasp, it might be that as well.
Let's call all the above "Mairon". I do think it's the most natural option of how he might think about himself.
I have no proof, though. He refuses to tell me. :-)
My headcanon is that he no longer refers to himself as any name at all. Like helenvader mentioned - Mairon is most likely not his original name since it's in Quenya. He might internally refer to himself as his Valarin name, whatever that is, but he's been changing identities back and forth since pretty much the beginning of time itself. I think ROP was really onto something with his increasingly mournful "I have many names" variations. He always deflects the question, and by the end of season 2, he's no longer acting smug about it. Does he even know who he is behind the masks? Is there anything left of the Ainu that once had a voice of his own?
In The Silmarillion, it's firmly stated that the Ainur who entered Arda had a clear sense of gender, so we know he's a "he". We know his virtues are a "love for order, planning and coordination" and a dislike of "confusion and chaos". Those are probably the only things he's got left of whoever he was before he started changing identities. Does that part of him still have a name? Does he still consider that his "true self"?
When I write fic from his point of view, I stick with "he". It's messy, but I feel like it's the only word that fits him at this point. He's got many names, but none of them are his.

In a fanfic context, and against my natural inclinations with a ship like this, I admit I AM a bit of a sucker for thousands of years of angst and some sort of resolution or reconciliation that may or may not follow Second-Third Age canon events BUTâŠ
I also want thousands of years of Sauron being a terrified fucking loser who is also regularly banging on the door screaming, crying and throwing up âwhy wonât you love me?!â
I want Galadriel to be so powerful and intimidating that he doesnât dare set foot in her lands like a little bitch, even though he knows of he went there personally heâd probably win. If any of his tacticians point this out he yells some weak excuse at them and possibly kills them.
I want Galadriel to tell everyone sheâs absolutely fucking done with him but sheâs regularly scanning his mind for tactics and maybe occasionally indulging in the kind of epic insanity-laced arguments that can only be honed after centuries of having to Deal With This (hate sex optional.)
The ring is eventually destroyed and sheâs relieved, and only a little sad outwardly because it has taken over a huge stretch of her life, but also the walls within her mind are no longer having to hold firm and suddenly itâs very quiet. She doesnât really like itâŠ
My vision isnât really star-crossed doomed lovers, itâs âI despise you and everything youâve done to me/others but I also canât exist without you/without fighting you and I hate that as well!â
(And because this is Sauron weâre talking about heâs definitely got more than one of those, itâs just heâs unfortunately killed at least a couple of themâŠ)
It was time to illustrate Galadriel. What do you think of The Rings of Power so far?
Eomer and Eowyn only talk to each other once in the films
but they communicate so much.
When Eomer first returns with a wounded Theodred, an entire dialogue is shared between Eomer and Eowyn without a single word passing between them.
This mutual look of concern, they're both on the same page.
Eowyn then goes on to look at Theodred's wound. It's interesting that Eomer now looks curious above all things, he's waiting on Eowyn's judgement.
Eowyn looks at the wound and grimaces. It's bad. Theodred isn't going to survive this.
She looks to Eomer, who looks back at her in grim resignation.
They go to Theoden to inform him of the situation. As Eomer walks by Eowyn, he doesn't speak to her or interrupt her, but he puts his hand on her back as he passes. Even when the focus is on other things, he is giving her that gesture of support and fondness. That it is done without fanfare shows that this sort of affection is commonplace.
They both stand before the throne, both of them united in their attempt to reach through to their uncle. They're a team, a unit.
Eomer throws down proof that Saruman, who Grima is trying to portray as a friend to Rohan, is sending his soldiers to terrorise their people.
Eowyn gives Grima a death glare, challenging him to refute her brother's accusations. She's on Eomer's side, Eomer's team.
Eomer sees Grima looking at Eowyn, and knows what he wants. It fills him with fury.
Eowyn sees her brother choking Grima against the wall. She looks on in cold silence, then walks away.
When Aragorn reveals that the beacons have been lit, Eowyn rushes into the throne room, drawing to a stop at Eomer's shoulder. They wait together for Theoden's judgement.
When it comes, and Theoden sends Eomer to muster the troops, Eomer bows, but even before he has fully straightened up, his eyes go to his sister.
Again, no words exchanged, simply a look of common understanding. They both know what the risks are, they both know what is at stake, for the world, for their country, for their family.
Before Eomer leaves, he touches Eowyn's arm, before walking away.
With Eomer gone, we see a steely determination come into Eowyn's eyes. Now there's something Eomer's missing, now Eomer's back is turn and there's something about his sister that she's keeping from him. She's riding to battle.
The one time they speak to each other, they're in opposition. About Merry, about Eowyn, about war.
The words are harsh. Eomer is stern, Eowyn is defensive.
But Eomer puts his hand on Eowyn's shoulder. He doesn't say "I don't want you to get hurt, I don't want you in battle", but that hand on her shoulder, tells the audience that's exactly what he's saying.
Those small moments of physical affection culminate in one great moment, when stern, stoic Eomer discovers Eowyn on the battle field, and breaks down in tears, cradling her and rocking her like she's a child.
And his devotion to her is ultimately shown in him sitting small and hunched, tucked in on himself, crouching down in armour for what seems to have been a lengthy space of time, as he sits by her side, waiting for her to be healed.
This is such an effective way of showing to an audience that two characters love each other, when there is a limited time window. The movie needed to crack on to cover the ground it needed to cover, and with so many important dynamics to reveal to the audience, the creators needed to be time effective. Eomer and Eowyn don't share much screen time, but the looks exchanged, the passing moments of intimacy, tells us clearly that these are two people greatly fond of each other, and have been fond of each other a long time.
The lack of spoken dialogue almost enhances it. Little is said between them because little needs to be said. They already know. The one time they do speak, it's when they're quarrelling, because that's the only moment when they need to use words. The rest of the time, a gesture, a look, is enough.
When and from where did this notion of 'Pure Pristine Madonna' Galadriel originate really?
The Fellowship senses her intrusion, albeit not fueled by malice, into their minds. Boromir is wary of her. Aragorn is familiar with her enough to trust her as an ally and respect her both for her wisdom as well as for her link to Arwen but even he wouldn't have guessed what went on in the recesses of her mind.
She is no Caradhras who actively tries to obstruct their path; neither does she offer the escapism and comfort that Tom Bombadil and Goldberry do. Galadriel heralds the inevitable hard choice that must be made both by the Fellowship and herself. The choice between what one desires ardently and the action that needs to be performed for the greater good. Hell, even her act of gifting three strands of her hair to Gimli can be interpreted, along with sincere generosity on her part, as one final fuck you to Fëanor. Ages came by and went. But she held on to her grudges. That's both petty and glorious of her.
Annette Crosbie's Galadriel appeared all sunshine and rosy but even her seemingly cheerful demeanour, when contrasted against the circumstances the protagonists are up against, can have an eerieness to it.
Then we have Cate Blanchett's Galadriel who was more enigmatic, majestic and, yet, had a somewhat sinister air to her. The protagonists are lucky she is on their side and this is not someone you would want for an enemy.
Morfydd's Galadriel is consistent with the other incarnations in the sense that ruthlessness and compassion coexist within her. It would be so fascinating to see her tap further into her darker urges and be entangled in a constant flirtation with them throughout the show. Warrior. Leader. Sorceress. Eldritch terror in making. Her character is a mithril mine and needs to be at the front, right and centre of the plot in future for she is the protagonist here.

Rings of Power Sauron/Galadriel Fic Rec Post of Fics that are Exactly my Taste: Part 3/? Completed Multi-Chapter Fics and AU Fics
You know the ones. The fics that make you rethink your whole life. The fics that make you stay up way past your already less-than-sensible bedtime. We all love multi-chapter fics: the slow burns, the genius AUs, the canon epics. Here are some of my favorites:
But mine is as hungry as the sea by Lizzen @liminal-zone, 5k, Canon Compliant, E: I really like when fic writers really sink into and explore a particular style. This writer is poetic, exploring Sauron and Galadriel's relationship after Season 1. Very surreal, they have *ahem* sensual meetings through their mind connection. It's a fic that explores their dynamic pretty faithfully to the show, without redemption or sugar-coating what these characters really are. Very good read.
Four Hours a Day by @nenyabusiness, 12K, Modern Musician AU, E: Galadriel is a classical pianist who diligently practices four hours a day every morning. She shares a wall with Halbrand, who is a prog-rock bassist who also insists on practicing, but while she is trying to sleep. There's a lot of passive-aggressive tension, and some heartfelt moments too as the relationship develops personally and professionally. I have a soft spot for musician AUs, and I think these roles fit them perfectly. The payoff is also hella sexy. (Does anyone say hella anymore?)
damn the weather by properhaunt, Modern AU, E: Ok, this is not a multi-chapter fic, but I could have sworn it was, because it's an AU one-shot that is so well-fleshed out that it feels longer than it is. Halbrand and Galadriel have a relationship where they've been dancing around each other for a long time, and tensions (the fun kind) finally snap at a mutual friend's holiday party. Classic trope of getting snowed in somewhere and having to stay the night and face your repressed feelings. Super hot but also extremely intimate. Some of my favorite Halbrand (specifically) characterization.
More to be added to this list! As always, if you like these fics, try to leave the author a comment!
