This one is a lady in her 50s, obsessed with The Rings of Power and the pathetic loser that is Mairon the Moron, Middle-earth's most innocent, never-done-anything-wrong, completely harmless Cinnamairon Roll.
Currently deep in a Discworld renaissance era and completely UNHINGED about Havelock Vetinari.

FORLORN. A short story. After the War of Wrath, Mairon comes to see Eönwë.
The following three are a triptych (named All Magic Comes at a Price) where each story is based on the same scenario (Mairon stops the eruption of Orodruin), but they have different plots, different outcomes and are written in different styles.
THE BRIGHTEST FLAME. A 9-chapter short story. The third iteration of "Mairon fights Orodruin". Because the world needed it. :-)
TALE OF A KING. 6-chapter novella/theatre play mashup. In the Fourth Age, a playwright and his editor get their hands on a lost diary from the Second Age that reveals King Halbrand's real identity.
FIRE. A short story. How come that, in Episode 6, people survived the pyroclastic cloud?

Summary:
Someone tries to kill Vetinari; Vimes takes it personally.
Vetinari walked into his office comparatively sedately, in complete contrast to Vimes, who was barrelling along after him as though he had been launched from Detritus’ piecemaker.
The door closed behind them as Vetinari strode to his desk and removed a bottle and some gauze from a drawer. Vimes pulled up in his usual spot opposite the desk, and caught a whiff of astringent liquid as Vetinari upended the bottle onto the cloth and pressed it against the long graze on the side of his neck.
“Very well, Commander,” he said, dabbing at the lightly oozing wound. “You had something you wished to say?”
“Oh, we can talk about it now, can we?” Vimes snapped. “You basically told me to shut up in front of your nobby mates back there.” The embarrassment still stung, even now they were alone.
“I was not about to have this conversation where we may be overheard, Vimes.”
“Somebody just tried to kill you!”
Vetinari raised an eyebrow. “I am well aware. At least, I assumed that was your reason for tackling me to the ground and straddling me in front of the Duke of Sto Helit.”
“I didn’t bloody straddle you!” Vimes’ cheeks reddened. “But I wasn’t about to let them get another shot at your damned head. Anyway, since you’re apparently aware of that, maybe you can explain to me why the hell don’t you seem bothered by it?”
The patrician sighed, and peered at the gauze before discarding it in his wastepaper bin. “People try to kill me with alarming regularity, Vimes. If I allowed myself to become bothered by it, I would never be unbothered.” He looked at back Vimes. “You tend to take these things far more personally than I do.”
Vimes shook his head angrily. “Because I’m your guard –”
“No, you are not. You are a city guard, not my bodyguard.”

@3liza they didn’t account for it because they didn’t realize it was an issue. The particles the gloves are shedding are not microplastics but they are similar enough in composition and under an electron microscope that because the scientists didn’t know to account for them, they didn’t realize that’s what they were seeing.
Also they DID account for contamination in WET sample preparation, because they’d already learned previously that the nitrile gloves could contaminate wet samples, but this was the first discovery that they were contaminating DRY or AIRBORNE samples as well.
All of this was very clearly laid out in just the last provided link - i didn’t even have to read all of them to learn this, I read like 3 paragraphs of the nautil.us article and I was able to learn what happened and why it hadn’t been accounted for.
Like, I understand the frustration, but this is the sort of thing that has to be DISCOVERED before it can be accounted for, and this is what that kind of discovery looks like, and berating scientists for not already knowing something science hadn’t yet learned is kind of a pointless and bad faith approach to things.
We’ve learned that a lot of the studies done on microplastics in our environment were not actually accurate, and had unintentionally incorrectly inflated numbers of microplastics in their samples due to this issue, which means that while microplastics are still obviously a problem, they’re not as overwhelming large of a problem than we thought! This is a good thing! Science has done its job and we have learned new things and can now do even better science! There’s no reason to be angry at or berate the scientists who’ve gone before. We know better now. That’s the important part.

To give context to foreigners, Čechomor is a folk rock band whose all time biggest hits are, among others, about a guy ceaselessly pursuing a disinterested girl, two guys fighting over a girl, or about how that one girl nextdoor has really big bazongas
“The damp cobbles felt reassuringly real under his soles. Gods, he’d missed this. He’d patrolled alone in the old days. When there was just him, and the stones glistened around 3 a.m., it all seemed to make sense somehow– He stopped. Around him, the world became a crystal of horror, the special horror that has nothing to do with fangs or ichor or ghosts but has everything to do with the familiar becoming unfamiliar. Something fundamental was wrong. It took a few dreadful seconds for his mind to supply the details of what his subconscious had noticed. There had been five statues along the parapet on this side. But there should have been four.”

Feet of Clay, Discworld, Terry Pratchett
I put this up before, but I can’t reblog it from myself because I posted it 7 years ago and I can’t find the damn post. But. Since we’ve been talking about horror again recently, I wanted to bring this back, because this one passage taught me so much about what horror is and how to show that horrifying moment where the realisation crystalises. The special horror that has nothing to do with fangs or ichor or ghosts, and everything to do with the familiar becoming unfamiliar. The creeping dread where your brain knows something is wrong, has twigged it subconsciously minutes ago, but your conscious mind is only now catching up and realising what it noticed and what it means. That moment when you’re calm and at peace and everything’s normal, but something’s wrong. And you noticed, but you didn’t understand. Not until possible too late.
Discworld is not, generally speaking, a horror series, though it’s definitely dipped its toes in several very memorable times. Horror isn’t one of its main genres. But this passage just … explains so well what horror, a certain sort of horror, is. Uneasiness. Dread. Creeping realisation. The shape of the monster appearing from the jumble of normality around you. Your instincts, your subconscious mind, screaming and beating their fists against the back of your brain. Something’s wrong. Wake up, you idiot! Something’s wrong.
It’s fantastic, is what it is. Discworld taught me so much.

This is what hieroglyphs and figures in ancient Egyptian temples looked like before their colors faded. They were recreated using a polychromatic light display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, following thorough research.
I also think, like... it's very sweet that whenever Vetinari is, shall we say, not feeling 100%, he likes to just have a chat with whoever's keeping an eye on him at the time. Ah, V- oh NOT Vimes, okay, and you are? Wonderful! Do you like being in the Watch? Well done. Who's that over there doing the shouting? Very good! This all seems in order, if you don't mind too much I'd like to be unconscious again now. Please let everyone know I'm not dead yet. Sorry about the carpet. Thank you so much.
The thing about this is, it's indicative of his actual character, rather than the Tyrant Persona or the general vibe he lets people assume about himself when they're working off of limited information. When he's hurt, or ill, or under the influence- whatever state he's in at the time where he physically cannot keep the evil dictator thing going- he's just cheerfully weird and very polite, and interested in other people. Ultimately I think these little unguarded moments do a lot to explain why he's doing this job in the first place, and what he might be like if he didn't feel like he had to be doing it.
They are very similar in a lot of ways and I don't think it's just me reading too much into it- they're friends, right? They've got to be friends for a reason, and if Sybil is calling him Havelock as early as Men at Arms then they've obviously been friends since before Sam came along. And I don't think Sybil would be actual, proper friends, on first-name terms, with someone whose Aloof Scary Tyrant persona was real. She sees the best in people and I think 'politely whimsical nerd who Cares A Lot' Vetinari is probably what she's seeing.
