You set your intention. You had all the correct correspondences. You even timed your spell with the appropriate moon phase. And yet – no results. What gives? 

Failed spells happen to the best of us, and for a variety of reasons. But a spell gone wrong doesn’t necessarily mean that magic isn’t real or that you’re bad at witchcraft. Magic is complicated, and there are a lot of reasons it might not behave the way you want it to. Here are some of the most common causes of ineffective spells: 

1. Lack of real-world follow through

Magic is meant to be used as a tool to supplement your mundane efforts – not as a substitute for them. How can you expect your job hunting spell to bring in results if you aren’t applying for jobs? 

Magic does not exist in a vacuum, and it can’t make something out of nothing. If a spell doesn’t bring you the desired result, make sure that your non-magical actions are aligned with what you are trying to manifest. 

2. What you’re trying to manifest isn’t a realistic possibility

Wait, what? Isn’t magic supposed to be, well… magic? Shouldn’t you be able to ask for whatever you want and get it? Yes and no.

Magic is simply a way of directing energy. Magic can’t defy the natural laws of the universe. It can’t make something happen unless it was already a potential possibility.

If your intention is unrealistic for where you are right now, try splitting it up into a multi-step process. No spell is going to make you a billionaire overnight, but magic could help you get hired at a better paying job… and then get promoted… and then get offered a profitable side gig… etc. Starting small and working your way up is always going to produce stronger results, because you laid the foundation first.

3. Your intention was either too vague or too specific 

Whether you use written petitions or spoken incantations, clearly stating your intention is an important part (maybe THE most important part) of any spell or ritual. A good intention is specific enough to get you the results you want, but open enough to let those results manifest naturally.

Let’s say you do a money spell, and your intention for the spell is simply, “I have more money.” If you find a penny on the ground the next day and pick it up, technically that is more money than you had before. A better alternative would be to use an intention like, “I have enough money to buy ___,” or “I have enough money for everything I need and want.”

Using an intention that is too specific creates the opposite problem. Let’s say you want to manifest a scholarship to a specific school. You do a candle spell with the intention, “I have been chosen for the John Smith Scholarship at Jane Doe University.” But maybe the John Smith scholarship had already been awarded by the time you did your spell. Maybe there’s another scholarship at the same school that would be a better fit for you, or maybe you’re eligible for a grant that would make tuition more affordable. A better intention for your spell would be “I have enough financial aid to easily and affordably attend Jane Doe University.”

Magic always follows the path of least resistance, so you want to make sure that your intention is specific enough to give your magic a clear direction, but open enough to allow it some flexibility. 

4. Lack of focus/concentration

We all know the struggle. You’ve been planning this ritual forever, and it’s finally the full moon, but you’ve got a really full schedule today. If you hurry, you can probably squeeze it into the thirty minute window between school and work, right? 

If you say a few quick words and burn some incense before you head out the door in the morning, that totally counts as a spell, right? 

Not so much. Rushed, lazy, and/or half-assed spells rarely, if ever, work. Spells revolve around the raising and direction of energy, and that requires two things: a clear intention (see above) and intense focus on that intention. If you don’t have the time/energy/mental capacity to focus, it’s best to take a break, have a self care day, and come back to your spell some other time. 

5. You’re subconsciously blocking your own results OR you did a spell for someone else who isn’t open to it

I decided to lump these two together, because they’re different variations of the same issue. 

Whenever you are doing magic on yourself, it’s important that your mindset is aligned with your intentions. You can do love spells all day long, but if deep down you don’t believe that you’re worthy of love, that belief is going to block your spells from working. This is why mindfulness, psychology, and self care are all such important parts of a successful witchcraft practice. It’s also why I recommend doing the mental work before you sit down to ritual. 

If you did a spell on yourself, or are trying to manifest something for yourself, and it just isn’t working, I highly recommend setting some time aside for journaling and meditation and asking yourself 1.) if this is really what you want, and 2.) if you truly believe that you can have it.

The whole mindset thing gets even more tricky when you’re doing magic on behalf of another person, because their energy is also at work in the situation and could be at odds with yours. For example, if you do a spell to help a friend land a job, but that friend believes that they’re totally underqualified and could never get it, they probably won’t get the job even if you did everything “right” in your spell. 

This should go without saying, but it is extremely unethical to use magic to mess around in someone else’s head. Even if you think you know what’s best for them, they need to be open to it. If someone is blocking the spells you do on their behalf, all you can do is try to be supportive and find other ways to help them out.

Other (Rare) Reasons for Failed Spells

If a spell goes wrong, it will almost always be for one of the above reasons. But maybe you did everything “right” – you did the mental work first, had a strong, realistic intention, put lots of focus into your spell, and followed through in real life – and you still aren’t seeing results. There are a couple of other things that could be blocking your spells, but they’re very uncommon so I’m not going to talk about them in as much detail. These may be things you want to look into if you really, genuinely can’t think of any other cause. 

It’s possible that another witch has done magic that cancels out or blocks yours. This is not common, and it does NOT mean that someone has cursed you. It could be as simple as two witches unknowingly casting spells with opposite intentions, which end up cancelling each other out. (For example, maybe two different people both cast a spell to get the same job. Obviously, they can’t both get that job.) This is why it’s never a bad idea to incorporate a protective element into your spells to block outside interference.

There is a very, very remote possibility that someone has placed a curse on you specifically to block your magic. However – and I cannot stress this enough – this is VERY uncommon. If you were cursed you would know it, or at least know that something was very wrong in your life. If you feel like you have been cursed or hexed, I recommend looking into uncrossing spells, which are specifically designed to undo negative magic.

- Sea Water: Water from the sea can be used for cleansing and healing rituals. Can be used for cleansing crystals (but be careful! Not every crystal should be cleansed with water). Also great for protection spells!

- Storm Water: Used for spells that has to do with emotional strength, confidence, motivation, and force. If you’re into curses, storm water is used for that.

- River Water: Used for moving on, focusing on energy, breaking through rough times, and warding.

- Rain Water: Rain water serves as a multi-purpose tool. It’s great for growth and rebirth spells. Also used for spells to gain power.

- Snow Water: Used for spells that focus on purity, endings, and change, also for slow working spells.

- Dew Water: Used for love and fertility spells as well as delicate magic. Great if you’re working for the fae!!

Retrieving the Reusable Ingredients and Getting Rid of the Rest

Reusable ingredients include crystals, shells, rocks, bones, and anything else that can be used again. Cleanse them in smoke or water and reuse them in your next jar.

Trash

Throw the contents into the trash or a dumpster, if you don’t want it near you.

Burying:

This is a more respectful way to dispose of materials, as long as it's safe to do so. Dig a hole at least half a foot, place the herbs that were used in the jar inside, and bury it in the ground. Make sure it's biodegradable and safe for animals before doing this!

Burning It:

Put the offering in a fire safe container (a pot, cauldron, etc) and safely light it. Make sure it's completely burned (don't let it out of your sight until the fire's out!) and then spread the ashes on the ground away from your house.

Releasing:

Release the materials into a body of water. Keep in mind that not all organic matters are safe for the water or for fish, so look it up beforehand

Ingredients:

Rosemary (1/4 cup) – Known for its protective qualities, rosemary shields you from negative energy and provides mental clarity.

Basil (1/4 cup) – This herb helps strengthen your boundaries and protect your personal space, fostering inner peace and protection.

Peppermint (1/4 cup) – Refreshes and clears away any stagnant energy, providing a protective, revitalizing effect.

Optional:

A few drops of protective essential oils like Frankincense or Cedarwood for added protection.

Directions:

Boil Water: Bring 4-6 cups of water to a boil in a pot.

Steep the Herbs: Place the rosemary, basil, and peppermint into a muslin bag or tea infuser, and drop it into the hot water. Let the herbs steep for about 15-20 minutes to infuse the water with their protective properties.

Optional: Add a few drops of your preferred essential oils (like Frankincense or Cedarwood) to further amplify the protective energy.

Strain and Cool: Once the tea has steeped, strain out the herbs (or remove the infuser) and let the tea cool slightly to a comfortable, warm temperature.

You’ll need:

One candle about 3-4” tall (any color will do)

A needle or other sharp tool to carve into your candle

Essential oils to represent what your intention is for this spell

Fire safe vessel/ holder for your candle to slowly melt into

With any spell requiring a lit fire, please be sure to do this in a space where you know the candle will not be disturbed for the duration of the spell.

I’m lazy when it comes to cleaning. My mom is essentially a hoarder and I ended up growing up that way. But, I never considered doing magick to help with this until I started reading Moon Spells by Diane Ahlquist. 

This spell can be done anytime during the Waxing Moon. I highly recommend speaking out your intention as you carve them into the candle and anoint the oils on. 

Take your candle and write in what your intending to achieve. I wrote “Cleaning House” along one side in block letters. 

On the other side, write “Break The Habit of [insert bad habit here]” and draw an image of what you feel best represents what you want as the outcome. Here is a terrible diagram of what I did on my candle:

For the oils, I used:

Grapefruit for vitality

Clary Sage for clarity

Rosemary for stability

If you don’t have anything other than the basic anointing oil, then just focus more on your intention as you put it on your candle. Make sure to comer the whole candle and allow time for the oils to take hold. You can set up your space while this happens either with music or just clearing your mind while you prepare the candle to be lit.

Once lit, allow the candle to melt completely and this must be done the same day/ afternoon/ night that you plan to do this. The length of the candle represents the time it will take for this to set in. If you want this to happen sooner, you must let it melt all the way. Otherwise, it could take longer. 

I don’t recommend shorter candles or fast burning candles. Shorter because you might not be able to write all the things and they need to be bold for added punch. Fast burning candles, while can send your intention faster out to whoever could assist, could also represent hastiness and rushing. Like all things rushed, you might not get the results you want. Take the time to read a book, meditate, write in your journal, but always monitoring the candle. If you have to step away to take care of something, put out the flame and take care of what you need to. Just remember to light it as soon as you can and let it finish.

As one of our first real posts on this blog again, I felt it would be most important to discuss one of the most basic aspects of spellcasting—candles and candle magic! Candles come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, smells, and materials, and with them brings a multitude of uses and things to factor in with your practice. As a critical aspect of spellcasting, candles can be most useful in assisting with manifestation and setting intentions with our work.

Choosing a Candle for Spellwork?

While some would argue that the size or make of your candle matters little, I would have to say that this is only really accurate when it comes to candles that you’re using around the house to burn for their pleasant smells. However, like most other practitioners of magic and witchcraft, I would say that it is important to choose your ritual and spellwork candles with more careful consideration. For example, if you’re doing a ritual that requires you to burn the candle all the way down, it would be counterproductive of you to choose a longer or larger candle that will take several hours to several days to finish burning. For most witches, we like the smaller votives or tea lights best, unless the spell or ritual calls for something more specific.

It is worth noting that any candle that is to be used for a spell or ritual should be a fresh one, or one that you are explicitly dedicating to being used for that particular type of spellwork or ritual and nothing else. The reason being that candles can pick up vibrations and energy from the universe around them, particularly when they are being burned. If you have an already-used candle that you’re trying to do spellwork with, your efforts may become tainted by the energy that this used candle might be carrying with it, thus negatively impacting your work or outcomes.

Some spells require candles that come shaped like certain figures, or they are to be used as sympathetic magic—where the candle will represent an entity or a person or feeling. Many witches like to rely on the color, astrological, or day of the week associations that come with candles, as well.

Color Correspondences?

White – White, in color or candle magic, is considered to be a collection of all the other colors, as such, in most pagan traditions and witchcraft, it can be used in place of other colors if needed. Its primary uses are for cleansing, purifying, healing, encouraging peace and honesty, spiritual or medium work, bringing harmony, and with reference to Lunar and Goddess energies. It is most often associated with the moon, Monday, and the zodiac sign of Cancer.

Gray – As a cross between white and black, this color often operates as a neutral force, in spellwork. Its primary uses are for maintaining peace or neutralizing negative or malevolent energies, as well as representing balance, protection, patience, and intuition. It is most often associated with the moon or Jupiter, Monday or Saturday, and the zodiac signs of Capricorn, Libra, Scorpio, and/or Virgo.

Black – Black absorbs light, in magic, so in spellcraft and energy work, it is most useful at absorbing negative energy. Its primary uses are in banishing, repelling, protection, enhancing inner strength and resilience, self-control, warding, and for help with breaking bad habits. It is most often associated with Saturn, Saturday, and the zodiac signs of Capricorn and/or Aquarius.

Red – Red, in candle and color magic, is the “fastest” color, so it is often used in conjunction with other candles to act as a catalyst for speeding up spells and achieving results faster. Its primary uses and associations are in love—passion and energy, lust and romance, anger, sex, confidence, determination, courage, as well as for general health. It is most often associated with Mars, Tuesday, and the zodiac signs of Aries and/or Scorpio.

Pink – Like red, pink is another color associated with love, in candle and color magic, though it is meant to be gentler and mostly used for good or purer intentions. Its primary uses and associations are for joy, self-love, happiness, intimacy, strengthening relationships and healing, reconciliation, friendships, sensitivity, and universal love. It is most often associated with Venus, Friday, and the zodiac signs of Cancer, Gemini, Libra, Taurus, and/or Virgo.

Yellow – Yellow, in candle and color magic, is primarily associated with warmth, energy, and life, and it has uses and associations in increased memory or regression, intelligence and logic, learning, confidence, knowledge, happiness, clarify, manifestation, and business dealings. It is most often associated with Mercury, Wednesday, and the zodiac signs of Gemini and/or Virgo.

Blue – There are many different shades of blue that all have their own more unique meanings, but a general rule of thumb is to look at blue in more of a “light” shade versus a “dark” shade in gathering meaning. Lighter shades of blue have uses and associations with inspiration, guidance, friendship, healing, and manifesting happiness or positivity. Darker shades of blue have uses and associations with enhancing psychic ability, empathy, balance and harmony, communication, counteracting depression, vulnerability and creativity. It is most often associated with Jupiter, Thursday, and the zodiac signs of Sagittarius and/or Pisces.

Orange – Orange, in candle and color magic, is most often used when one needs to be bold or confident, as it is considered to be an incredibly powerful color. Its primary uses and associations are with change, career success, control, confidence, fun, dispelling laziness or poor workmanship, finding motivation or creativity, ambition, and taking quick action. It is most often associated with the Sun, Sunday, and the zodiac sign of Leo.

Green – Green, in candle and color magic, is most often associated with success that comes from the fruits of one’s labors or harvest. This is where the association of green with success generally comes from. Its primary uses and associations are with prosperity and abundance, growth and harvest, new beginnings, generosity, counteracting greed and jealousy, and with trees, plants, or other workings of nature. It is most often associated with Venus, Friday, and the zodiac signs of Taurus and/or Libra.

Purple – Purple, in candle and color magic, is most often associated with royalty (power), though I also learned it to be heavily associated with psychic power and intuition. Its primary uses and associations are with ambition, spirits and astral energy, divination and intuition, respect, expansion of the realms, universal or cosmic awareness, and uncovering secrets and knowledge. It is most often associated with Jupiter and/or Neptune, Thursday, and the zodiac signs of Sagittarius and/or Pisces.

Brown – Brown, in candle and color magic, is most often used in dealings with nature, the earth, or animals. Its primary uses and associations are in developing strong and sturdy foundations, grounding, dispelling indecisiveness, improving concentration or help with studying, and upkeep of the home or sacred space.

Dressing Candles before Use?

Once you’ve selected your candle, you may choose to oil or dress it before burning. This often helps to establish an energetic bond between you and the candle, like charging it with your own personal energies and vibrations to better help project your intent into it before burning. To dress candles, you would need a natural oil—a lot of witches like to use grapeseed because it’s cheaper, more accessible, and has no strong scent. Another option would be to buy or mix your own oils like the ones sold at metaphysical stores for more personal touches. Some spellwork may call for specific herbs to be mixed into the oils or for the candle to be rolled in prior to use while setting your intention for the casting.

You begin dressing your candle in oil, you start at the top of the candle and rub the oil down to the middle using a finger or special, dedicated cloth for it. Begin again at the base of the candle and rub the oil back up towards the middle, ending where the first coating of oil finished. Depending on the pagan tradition practiced, anointing is done in a similar fashion, it just works the opposite way; start in the middle and work your way towards the top and bottom instead.

Candles for Divination?

Candles also have divinatory properties and purposes. The most common method of divination with candles involves reading the wax and the way that the candle physically burns. To divine by way of burning, pay attention to whether the candle burns low or tall, if it flickers, or if there’s more than one flame. Two flames could mean that a spirit or otherworldly entity is attempting to reach out to you, or that someone is trying to help you achieve your goal. The colors found inside of the flame may also give hints about the effectiveness of your spellwork, depending on how brightly or dimly it burns. Others may divine with the candle’s wax by dropping pieces of it into a bowl of cold water and examining the hardened shapes that form, similar to tasseomancy, or divination by reading tea leaves or coffee grounds.

How It is Created: It is part of the chalcedony family. It is made up of silicon dioxide colored by different levels of iron impurities, with specks, banding, or stripes in many shades of brown or orange-red.
