âI wish I could say I have never done that, but, honestly, back when Girl on the Train came out I also thought Iâd be able to read the entire book within a week before the film dropped,â she admitted, a little bit embarrassed if she was being honest. âBut I guess thatâs also part of how the publishers make money â just put a special edition for the film release in stores and people will go mad!â
"I actually finished that one before the movie came out,â Naomi admitted with a laugh. âRead it in three days because it just turned into one of those canât put down situations, you know?â Times like that now were few and far between and Naomi missed when she used to read that much. âThen I went to see the movie and ended up being so disappointed by how they portrayed the characters, Rachel especially. Oh yeah â itâs a big boon for publishers getting to re-release books like that. And they sell so many copies before and after the film releases. I just find it ironic people think theyâll read a 500 page book when they donât even read regularly. Itâs like running a 5k one morning when you barely get off your couch most days.â
âAlso, I wish there was some middle ground alternative that would let you absorb a book into your mind in the time it takes to watch a movie. Because that would be amazing.âÂ
gabrielagarcicâ:
âDo you really guarantee it, though?â Gabi smiled teasingly. âI mean, if youâre a teenager and have nothing better to do than reading a book, you might finish one of these in three days time, I say it, because I have said teenager at home and she devours books upon books, I donât know how she will keep up with it once she becomes a fully functional adult.â
"Iâd bet five or ten quid on it confidently. Hell, even twenty,â Naomi answered, smiling. âThe people who buy these books always do it because itâs the in thing right now and the movie release hyped it up. Oh yeah â teens donât count, they have time. Everyone who came in asking for the book today was well over 30. Theyâll get ten pages in, if that, then the movie release will come around and theyâll just give up and go see it. More power to your girl, though â it feels like nobody reads these days anymore, especially not teenagers. All they know is that stupid TikTok app.â

A rebel without a cause, her father would call her, or in his precise words, âa rebel with bugger-all to rebel againstâ. It wasnât often that Ross Clark, onetime member of the wildly popular 80âs punk rock band The Guillotines, would reprimand his only daughter, but sometimes the moment called for it. Indeed the girl had as free and unrestricted a childhood one could have, rubbing shoulders with Englandâs musicians, artists, and bohemian elite since she could walk. But both mother and father were busy wrapped up in their own projects, her dad managing an up-and-coming band, and her mother, once an actress, now a supremely busy and constantly worn out theatre director. Family outings were few and far in between, and Naomi was often left to her own devices. She was described as something of a terror in her all-girls boarding school, getting into fights, scrapes, all manner of mischief and constantly in the headmistressâs office. Questioning authority came easy to her, especially when she had such prime examples to take after. She felt an air of superiority over the other girls, and why wouldnât she: her dad would come to pick her up in his gleaming red Jag convertible a fortnight early to take her to Glasto. Though her bored antics amused her, Naomiâs parents werenât too pleased with them, especially when one particular stunt involving horses from the school stables had the headmaster calling them in a very stern voice. But fame was easily escapable for Naomi, especially when oneâs primary residence is a sprawling cottage in Surrey. She had her own string of rocker boyfriends and was in the press for a while, but the novelty of sliding in and out of clubs half drunk with the paparazzi under her skirt got tiring after a while, too. Bored of that life and wanting nothing to do with it, she pulled a disappearing act in all her social media, and the world quickly forgot her name, too. Much better that way. She tried uni but it wasnât for her, a degree in music journalism quickly abandoned when she realised her passions didnât lie in that direction. It was back to the family home, but things got quickly dreary there, her dad living with his new wife in New York and her mother still never at home. She packed her belongings and made a permanent move to London, hoping to find something there that she couldnât elsewhere. Now, six years on, she works at Gaunt Books, managing things behind the scenes and also acting as front of the shop (itâs a small five-employee affair that she is in charge of). It pays the bills at the Primrose Hill apartment her father left for her, and thatâs about all she wants out of life currently.

As soon as she agreed, Marco was quite happy to be rid of it, the last thing he liked was waste. âAwesome,â he responded, flashing her a bright smile. When she offered to buy his, he had to shake his head, reaching out for his fresh drink. âNo need,â he answered her simply. âWhatâs making you need the extra boost today? Busy day?â
"I work at a book store,â the brunette explained. âWeâre getting rid of some excess stock and itâs an everything half-off, buy 2 get one free day. We always get overrun when we have those days.â

â Maybe youâre right. â Izzy muttered, pushing her hair out of her face and wincing when she caught the bump on her head. â This seems to be kicking my butt pretty hard. â She added, holding the glass in the air before downing the rest of its contents.
She tried to climb down from the stool but stumbled doing so, clinging onto the edge of the bar to save herself from landing on the floor.
"Or your head,â Naomi quipped, since that was the initial source of her pain in the first place. âI mean, blackout if you like, but Iâm not going to haul you up a flight of stairs to get you home. I appreciate my back too much for that.â Â
When she saw Iz stumble, thatâs when Naomi decided to put a stop to things, before a mild concussion turned into a full on needing stitches situation. Hitching her bag up her shoulder, she slipped off her own chair and looped her arm under Izzyâs. âAlright, youâre coming with me.âÂ

"Why do people only remember books when thereâs a bloody movie about to come out? I had four separate customers asking today if we have Dune. I guarantee you wonât finish it before the movie comes out â itâs 562 pages.âÂ
xmarcoricciâ:
âSo the barista screwed up my order, you happen to like latteâs with an extra two shots?â the question was asked to the person beside him as Marco attempted to pass the small coffee over. His new order was already in the process of being made, many apologies accompanying it, so he figured someone should at least try to make the most of the mix up. âI mean hell, I like my coffee strong, but maybe not that strongâŚâ He chuckled.
Naomi thought for a moment, but she was in a rush. And something now was better than waiting. âSure, Iâll take it. I need the extra boost today.â I was going to be hectic at work today, that much she knew, so sheâd take whatever jolt and/or heart attack was offered her way. âShall I buy your drink? You know, to even out this balance.â

Tessa liked running. Unlike most people she knew, she really did enjoy it. Something about the consistent movement, the wind blowing past her face⌠It blocked out the outside world and no matter how bad her day had been, a run usually managed to make everything just about okay again. Unfortunately, it was 6:30 in the morning and 7 degrees outside when she was able to start. A mile down the street and she was already short of breath. âIâm so sorry,â she muttered to a passerby she accidentally blocked. âThis was a terrible decision.â
Going out had been a bad idea. A certifiably horrible idea, especially when she was due in for work tomorrow (or today, given that it was already morning and the darkness of night was breaking to make way for dawn). Sheâd had it all planned, leave the club at 2, be home by 3:30, asleep by 4, and sheâd get at least 4 hours of sleep until she had to be up for work. John was easy to work with that way, he wouldnât mind if he was a half hour or even an hour late, as long as she turned up at all. But none of that had gone to plan, she had stayed out far too long and drank far too much, with the results all over her now. She definitely looked worse for wear, especially when a stranger approached. âNo, sâalright,â she gesticulated, although for some reason everything seemed to go sideways. She stumbled a little, felt like her head was going to explode â and went right for the hedge bushes of the nearby house to upend the contents of her stomach in. Great. Not only embarrassing to have done that, but to have a witness for it, to boot. âIâm alright, sâfine...â

It was stupid really. Izzy had been forced to take a few days off work because they were worried she had concussion. She was adamant she was fine, but they didnât want to take the risk. So here she was, doing exactly what someone with concussion shouldnât do, drinking at a bar. Just one drink, she had promised herself and then she would go home and rest. But now she was on her third, and still at the bar.Â
The bump on her head was sore, but the more she drank, the more the pain subsided. Clearly this was a great plan. She rested her elbow on the bar and her chin on her hand and let out a sigh. â Damn that asshole. â She muttered to herself.
Naomi had made the trek over to the Hammersmith pub after work. She wouldnât have usually, her trek after work usually included a stop to Whole Foods in Camden, or, very rarely, her favourite pub in Covent Garden. But whatever had happened to Iz sounded semi-serious, and the moment she stepped out the bookstore she made a beeline to the tube to be on her way.
âNot to discourage you from drinking, ever, but maybe this should be your last?â Naomi suggested, a brow raised, still on her second pint of cider.Â

Lily Collins on set of âEmily in Parisâ in Paris, France (August 14, 2019)

âNah. I kicked that habit a few years back. I could feel my lungs turning to mush.â Though in all reality the smoking had been giving him issues with high blood pressure and considering that heart attacks ran in his family he decided to stop. Though he understood people who smoked and didnât judge the woman for that. âThough I do admire how you stick it to the man.â He motioned at the sign she stood next to.Â
âGood on you,â Naomi said tonelessly. At the very least, he didnât seem to have a judgmental tone about the whole thing, which was one of her particular pet peeves. âI wouldnât really care to stick it to anyone, but this cityâs rather draconian when it comes to anti-smoking laws....â and all the other anti-fun laws. Sometimes, she wondered if it wouldnât be better living in Madrid, or Rome, somewhere European where they didnât give half so much a shit about the law.
sophiekrogersâ:
Sophie didnât often get messily drunk but today was one of those days where she truly let her hair down. The two friendâs she had arrived with had found a pair of equally drunk guys and had all stumbled off somewhere leaving Sophie to fend for herself, something she was more than happy to do. Making friends whilst intoxicated was one of Sophieâs favourite things to do. She grabbed the hand of a nearby person, tugging it just enough to get their attention before letting go, âIâm getting shots, want one?â she asked, âpick your poison,â raising an eyebrow as if challenging them to some kind of non-existant competition.Â
"Iâd prefer tequila,â Naomi said without missing a beat. Sheâd come to the pub with Georgie and Louie, listened to them talk endlessly about this and that whilst zoning in and out, and now they were â god knows where. Dancing on a table somewhere, probably. Meanwhile, sheâd found herself drifted towards the bar, in search of something stronger than a pint of cider. âBut honestly, whatever. I donât mind.â
collins-eckelâ:
âI wonât tell if you wonât.â His tone was playful as he gave the person a quick wink. Collins was just out and about London, he wasnât necessarily looking to stir up any trouble but trouble always seemed to find him.
"You better not,â Naomi said, standing defiantly by the âNo Smokingâ sign with her cigarette in hand. Whether it was a threat or not, she wasnât sure, but her words werenât laced with any sharpness. She wasnât looking to get booted out of the establishment tonight, of all nights. âYou know if you want one, you can just ask.âÂ

âYouâve got to be joking.â
His displeasure was palpable but didnât appear to be quite warranted by the letter & torn envelope in his hand. âSorry,â He muttered to the individual closest. He shook his head, rolling his eyes. âThe manâs forty-one years old & heâs still trying to have a stag party.â
"Could be worse. Couldâve been an all inclusive stag trip to Ayia Napa. Nothing more depressing than âlads on tourâ, possibly except forty-something lads on tour.â Naomi had a strong dislike for herd mentality, and these kinds of events were the perfect example of it. âJust say you sprained your ankle badly in RSVP.âÂ
