The Chronicles of Narnia are essentially a thinly-veiled, 7 book allegory for Christianity. Phillip Pullman, the author of The Golden Compass, was a vocal atheist and openly despised The Chronicles of Narnia because of its Christian themes. Pullman wrote the “His Dark Materials” series as a response to the Chronicles of Narnia, where he heavily critiqued organized religion, particularly the Catholic Church
