i doubt my teaching skills when it comes to showing new volunteers how to handle/feed/weigh the birds at the wildlife centre but today i got to overhear someone new i'd been teaching (whilst she was talking to a friend) and she was just enthusing about everything we'd done that morning with a huge grin on her face. she also told me directly that she loved it, but it was something else to hear her tell a different person about how cool it was to feed baby birds. i worry that my uncertainty with instructing & demonstrating will translate into too much stress for the new person for anything to be enjoyable, & hearing otherwise has made my week

#i've got a bad habit of not believing people when they tell me they're happy about things to my face #like of course you'll say i was helpful and you had fun and thank me because you don't want to upset me #<- untrue but im just paranoid #so hearing her get excited about it to someone else was genuinely healing #it also made me remember how much fun i had at the start too #because atp feeding the birds is such a chore and i'm grateful when other people do it #because it means i can focus on other stuff #but at the beginning .. holy shit i was buzzing every time #giving a tiny bird some food by putting a syringe down its throat and having it gape for you #is an incredible experience #and i'm glad i was able to give someone else that experience #enough that she was comfortable doing it alone by the end of the shift #and also wanted to tell her friend all about it #whilst grinning #:')
