Truest truth
Went to the Aboriginal artifact exhibit in Chicago. And it’s interesting. How many blankets and masks and totem poles say ‘unknown source’, because every five seconds my mom would stop and point to something and say. “Pauline’s grandmother made that,” or, “That belongs to Mike’s family, I should call him” because. It’s all stolen
“These artifacts were excavated by archaeologists from a burial site in the 1970’s. The remains were returned for reinterment” Okay cool, cool cool. So you just, like. Dug up the grave of a respected family member, stripped them naked, mailed their body back to their family and kept everything they were lovingly put to rest in. Like a graverobbing bastard
Reminds me of the time when of the elders from my hometown started touching a totem pole in the Museum of Anthropology out at UBC and got yelled at by the staff, only to tell him that the pole had been stolen off of the front of her bighouse when she was ten years old.
Museum collectors did the equivalent of kidnapping a family member when they were away fishing.
The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act requires all institutions that receive federal funding to repatriate remains and artifacts so if you can identify the source of something on display absolutely get a hold of that institute’s repatriation office
I'm an archaeologist and dude, that's basically what we do man. We dig up graves and study what's inside, and since whatever we dig is publicly own, we save it in public spaces like a museum.
Natives are a special case, as jews are for example, and as far as I'm aware, nowadays we ask for permission to the them. Maybe not before, but now we are taught to be respectful and responsible and to have everyone on board.
So yeah archaeologist were all racist and they stole but now we just try to do our best and increase the knowledge we have about ourselves.
I'm not american so if an american archaeologist has something different to say or add go ahead.

Khuk Khi Kai - WTF fun fact
May I add this was used to punish those who rebelled the French occupation.
Ni machismo, ni feminismo.
An action being “punishable by a fine” basically means “legal for rich people”.
Oh wow. That’s…
I once dated a rich guy and if I said “Hey it’s illegal to drink on the street” he’d respond with “Nah, it just costs £150″, or “You can’t park here!” “Yeh I can it costs £35″ like… literally… that’s how he saw fines, it was just how much you paid to do the thing.
Reminds me of the double red lines in London. They exist because rich people kept parking on double yellow lines (which mean “no parking” in the UK) and then just paying the fines. So London started putting double red lines on major roads. If you park on double red lines, they don’t give you a ticket. They tow your car away and crush it.
I like that.
For rich people, it stops being a fine and starts being a fee
