I don't love that every time a famous artist turns out to be a fucking disgusting piece of trash loser evil shitstain that everyone always scrambles to say WELL THEIR ART WAS ALWAYS MID AND BAD ANYWAY. like dude just reckon with the fact you can't judge someone's moral fiber based on the art they make or the clothes they wear or the way they speak or fucking anything anything at all
You have to understand that the worst people in the world have all the same capacity for experience as everyone else, they just choose to do evil inexcusable shit with it. In a strange way I think this is part of the banality of evil. Making good art or having profound feelings or whatever else doesn't make someone ethical in any way, it just makes them an alive person.
We do not humanize people like that to excuse their behaviours or encourage empathy with them at the expense of those they hurt. We need to humanize them so that we understand no one, no matter what they made or how it spoke to us, is guaranteed to be trustworthy or be safe to be around or to be who they say they are.
One of the most upsetting but important things in the world is listening to an acoustic cover of a band's most heartfelt song and thinking abt what a piece of shit the writer was even as the lyrics spoke to me.
To realize that even the most heinous, most full of shit, most hypocritical rapist still feels that life is going by at such a speed he can barely hope to perceive it, let alone keep up. Feels nostalgia, feels vulnerability and the fear thereof, gets out of bed and wonders when he got so old. This abhorrent man who spent decades not only doing things I would sooner kms than do, but actively hiding and denying them and presenting a public face of believing in feminism and bodily autonomy... in an unrelated area of life, went through exactly what I've been going through.
