My take on Lovelace and Lambert for you, Sophie! It’s hard to pick one favorite character, but I love these two.

My idea behind this drawing is it’s the first day of the first Hephaestus mission. Lovelace is excited to have command over the ship and wants to take pictures with her crewmates to document the occasion. Lambert is busy working, but reluctantly agrees.

Poor friends. They have no idea what’s coming :(

I loved doing this drawing, even though if I’m completely honest I’m not super happy with it and I feel like it could’ve been better. Plus the camera distorted it and made it look odd. Nonetheless, it was fun!

Imagine being Samuel Lambert, and on top of being star-eyed and completely enamoured with understanding the way the world turns, people make fun of you for speaking of things that aren't there. And you do try, you try really hard to fit in, but it's just too much when you look up at the night sky sometimes and you swear you can see the stars moving and the heavens aligning and it feels like the clouds are just parting out of the way for you.

But then come the monster attacks. And you are too smart to not know that something is coming after you. No matter what your mom says, and no matter who you try to be, they keep coming. Bullies and strangers and even teachers, sometimes, come after you and they won't stop. They are relentless, and the only way to get away from it is when you spend time late at night staring at the sky, being amazed at how the stars work and wondering and wishing if you could just reach beyond them.

And then comes camp.

And camp is amazing. It really is. The only issue is, you've lost your mom, the one person who supported you and who you felt like knew what was going on, And the person closest to being your best friend turns out to be half goat, and there's this new girl that you've met, who really has it out for you.

And even though Fisher is nice, and he still is kind to you, he's part of this world, not yours. Well, not the one you used to be part of. And it's hard to decide where you want to be. Do you want to be here, where your mom is gone and nothing makes sense anymore, or do you want to be there, where nothing makes sense anyways.

And so you accept it. You accept living in the Hermes cabin, and you accept that you are just going to have to get used to it. And Fisher's still there, and he's still your friend, and even the girl who kind of hates your guts is starting to warm up to you a little. Even if she doesn't agree with that dusty old (Probably outdated) rule book you found in Mr. D's house and insist on carrying around with you.

I LOVE CONSTANCE, OK? IT'S A SHAME SHE'S STILL A KID OR SHE WOULD BE UNSTOPPABLE, BUT KIDS GROW INTO ADULTS.

because of reynie being the white knight (of course) all the good guys will be white side pieces and the bad guys will be black side pieces, even though without that i may have made it opposite since curtain “moved first”, these are chosen mostly based on move style and gameplay function!

WHITE ⚪️

King: Mr Benedict

he heads the operations and it would be very difficult to continue without him, but also due to his narcolepsy and the nature of the operation he can’t do much

Queen: Milligan

all around the most versatile of their group, up in the action capturing “pieces” lots of different specialties

Bishops: Number Two and Rhonda

closest to the king and queen, can travel long distances and make big moves to set up other pieces into good positions

Knights: Reynie and Constance

unpredictable movement, both of these characters are very much about the puzzle and the knight embodies that more. may be harder to see where they will strike next

Rooks: Kate and Sticky

strong and reliable, both of their strengths are straight forward and always present.

Pawns: Ms Plugg, Moocho, Ms Perumal, Hardy, Gristle, and Sticky’s Mom and Dad

lesser but important players in the game, allow for bigger moves to be made than if they were not present

BLACK ⚫️

King: Mr Curtain

in a similar position to mr benedict, though i think he makes more moves personally than mr benedict does, capturing him takes down the game

Queen: Mccracken

similarly to Milligan, he is the brute force power piece, works well in many environments and situations 

Bishops: Sharpe and Crawlings

of the ten men these two are the more odd pair, i was tempted to make them knights but you’ll see my reasoning not to in a moment, the diagonals suits them

Knights: Jackson and Jillson

according to my brother who plays chess, other than pawns a knight is the first piece you would “trade” or sacrifice, it’s less valuable than the other second row pieces, and works much better in the short game than the long game which i thought fit jackson and jillson well

Rooks: Garrote and Mortis

these two feel “sturdier” in a way, and with mortis i was thinking about castling and how the rook gets in the middle and moves the king away into the corner, it felt right (mortis is the long armed ten man from book 2 i’m fairly certain)

Pawns: SQ, Martina, and the other executives and messengers.

specifically SQ is a pawn that crosses the board to become a queen, i have two reasons for this, one) he starts out as a seemingly expendable unimportant character but becomes very important in the “late game” two) the crossing of the board, he is now “on white’s side” even as a black piece. for the rest, they are pawns for the reason sq is initially a pawn, they are seen as expendable
