late last night at around 11 pm, my grandmother passed away. It was peaceful and painless. My great aunt, her younger sister, called us to tell us the news. We are all together and sharing stories about her life. I don’t know if I believe in much of a life after death, but I know there is nothing to fear about it. I am so grateful to have had her in my life, even if only into my teenage years. The mark she has made on me as a person will never change and I will always remember her as the woman who helped refugee families and tutored refugee children, volunteered at her church, was unapologetically radical, made an effort to learn all she could about my sibling and I’s queer identities, and made sure none of her grandchildren felt unloved. I am planning on making our famous bacon mac n cheese recipe tonight for dinner to celebrate her love for us all.
