Hi I hope you're having a good day Can you please give advice for a burntout 3rd year medical student ? Thank you
Hey!
Burnout is real, and it sucks. Weâre in a field where the demands put on us regularly exceed what is healthy. Being your own advocate when everyone and everything is telling you to be at 110% at all times is rough, but it is absolutely necessary. I repeat: Taking care of yourself, however you are able, is not optional.Â
As some longtime followers may remember, I crashed and burned at the end of second year, and vowed to never be in that place again. I am so far from perfect itâs hilarious. But, Iâm right in your shoes, so this is what is working for me thus far.Â
1. Study on the wards whenever you can. Iâm on a surgical rotation, so between cases Iâm going over practice problems. Sure I may only get through 5 in one sitting, but sprinkle that throughout the day and it adds up. Then, if you go home and crash, youâre guilt-free.Â
2. This may be counterintuitive, but for me, open-ended time can be a productivity killer. Say you set aside your entire day off to study. You sit down, and then- Holy crap, itâs 3pm and youâve spent the day agonizing over one block of problems! You feel awful, and your motivation is shot. Instead of going into a shame spiral, set yourself some structure, and youâll be able to focus better. If you know you will have the day off on Friday, set an activity during that day that is fun and fulfilling for you. In my case, I recently spent an afternoon in the park with my Amazing Girlfriend. Knowing that I had that activity to look forward to made it easier to study during the day. Once you are doing the aforementioned fun activity, PUT AWAY THE NOTES. Be present, breathe, stretch- This is âyouâ time, and thatâs just as important as anything else youâre doing.
3. Talk it out and connect with other people. Do you have a friend, a partner, a parent, a pet? Ask them how their day was, and tell them about yours. Isolating yourself when your feeling crappy is easy. Alone time is great, but there is a point when it becomes unhealthy. Fight that impulse as best you can and reach out. I have a friend who is a year ahead of me, and she is a huge help when it comes to navigating medical school. My partner keeps me grounded and reminds me what it means to be a fighter. There are people in your life rooting for you, and Iâm sure theyâd love to hear from you!
4. Take care of your physical self. Itâs very easy to neglect your body in medical school, ironically enough. Feed yourself things that are healthy and delicious, give yourself plenty of water, and sleep whenever possible. Always have pocket snacks. If you have time to exercise, great! If not, youâre probably running around the wards anyway, itâs okay. This also goes for feeling good about how you look. Iâm a makeup fiend, so even if I get up at the butt crack of dawn, I will have my brows on and mascara. It takes 2 minutes, and I feel more confident. Find what makes you feel just a smidgen better about yourself- Nice undies, a cute ID badge holder, whatever!Â
5. Ask for help. This is the scariest tip, and the most important one. No one gets anywhere alone, and medical school is no exception. Are you struggling with a concept? Ask your resident. Away rotation application woes? Ask your English major friend to read your essays. Feeling like you could use some therapy? See what resources are in your community and school.Â
So, TL; DR: Do what you gotta do to keep yourself sane. Youâre worth it, and making time for yourself is never a waste.Â
We were rounding with one of the older (70+ yo) surgeons today. He has always been a sharp dresser, and today was no exception. One of the long-time nurses sidled up to him as we turned the corner.Â
Nurse: âOOOooooooh, Dr. W! Are you wearing skinny jeans?!â
Dr. W:Â âWell, you know I like to keep it hip!â
The surgeon swagger... Itâs real.

One for the Whovians...
So I just thought of the nerdiest, dumbest joke for med folks and Whovians: Nerd A: So did you know that the Doctor has aortic stenosis of both hearts? Nerd B: Wait, really? Nerd A: Yeah! He has pulsus parvus et Tardis!

To all the young Millenials about to watch M*A*S*H for the first time, do not be turned off by Max Klinger being a guy in a dress.
For those of you unaware, the character tries several schemes to get out of the army on the grounds of being mentally unfit for service, most notably being a man who wears a dress, which no one buys. Itâs played off as a joke but everyone loves him and treats him very respectfully unless itâs a character youâre not supposed to sympathise with.
You might want to call bull on the fact that theyâre getting a cheap joke at a man in a dress. But, this man in a dress had a gender identity crisis ON SCREEN (although they couldnât call it that) and also helped pave the way to allow transgender people into the armed forces.
No, seriously. A congressman who was a fan of the show brought up how Max Klinger cross dressing never was an issue at this M*A*S*H unit and it allowed transgender people to serve in the armed forces!
Iâm a trans(masc) millenial and the biggest thing I feel was made fun of was how much some people were bothered by Klingerâs clothes, not the fact that heâs wearing them.
Klinger learns a lot about fashion and sewing and seems to develop a genuine passion for it over time.
Thereâs even one time when he develops a psychosomantic (spelling?) rash during a short time when he has to wear his uniform. Even after it is clear that heâs not gonna get to go home by wearing dresses, he continues - suggesting either a persistent act of defiance to make him feel better, or a real appreciation of the clothes⌠or both!
Heâs clearly coded as straight, is accepted by his peers, and his character arc and development is barely focused on his clothes (rather it focuses on what he wants to do with his life; his dream future).
For a show made in the 70âs depicting the 50âs, M*A*S*H was a show before its time - with feminist messages and anti-war messages, as well as speking out against homophobia and racism - and Klinger was a groundbreaking character.
This is especially true, I think, if you watch the episodes sans the laugh track. Without the canned laughter, Klingerâs costuming comes off as especially sincere. Klinger is a good man and a great character and everyone in the camp respects him (and if they donât, itâs not because of his attire).
The discovery that you can select âEnglish Without Laugh Trackâ as an audio track has made the DVDs wonderful.
YOU CAN TURN OFF THE LAFF TRACK?? YES PLEASE!!
IIRC thereâs an episode where Klinger asks his Korean girlfriend to marry him, and after thereâs a moment of confusion on her part about his reference to a white dress, because white in Korea is a funeral colour, he talks about them both wearing dresses at their Korean-American wedding.
I may have to get the DVDâs just to kill the laugh track
This show wasnât formative for me, noooooo....
I totally donât have a pet named after a certain dashing doctor or a teddy bear named after a certain Hawaiian nurse...
