@pythonmoth has some more angst options for simon riley fics and imo a more in depth take on his character .. (teach me how to love you was very good)

"Lose weight then," you mumbled, doing your hair in the bathroom mirror.

You paused, looking up at yourself. Your eyebrows furrow.

"Wait. Why did I say that?"

"You're righ," Simon answered glumly. As you looked at him, you could see him looking at himself in the mirror, a big frown on his face.

"No, I didn't mean it!" you tried to argue.

"I'll lose weight right now." Slowly he lifted his shirt up over his stomach to show you the ribs now peeking through his skin.

"No... No...!" you muttered in your sleep, rolling around on the bed.

You were clearly in distress, mouth open and eyes squeezed together tightly. Simon knew what nightmares felt like, how real they could appear and so he just gently tucked you back in and brushed his hand up and down your arms.

Simon found a bug!

Weird.

That’s what Ghost thought of you. Every time he turned around you were following him like a lost puppy. Which was pretty accurate considering the fluffy puppy ears and tail protruding out of you.

At first he was annoyed to have a little freak like yourself following him. Didn’t you know he didn’t like you? You weren’t tough and not even the slightest bit scary, VERY different from him.

But watching your stupid, stubby tail wag happily when he would give you the slightest attention made a small smirk appear under his mask. You were such a dumb puppy and that alone was enough for him to stick around. He was convinced there was nothing behind your big, wandering eyes.

Which is why he took it upon himself to take care of you. Not that it was because he cared for you but because someone had to do it. Yeah other people in the unit tried to help you, but only he could do it. It didn’t matter because as soon as he showed up you would immediately flock to him.

You were a big talker, something he wasn’t quite fond of. It was cute to watch you flit around and yap on about some random story, but sometimes he had to rein you in. That’s why the rest of the 141 often find you curled up in his lap with his hand firmly holding your scruff.

Soap constantly laughed at Ghost’s denial of getting close to you after complaining about you for so long. Mind you he always makes your plate for you at meal times, combs through your messy hair after bathing, lets you drink from his water bottle, and lets you sleep in his bed with him.

The sanctuary workers assume it will be fine, ghost has never been aggressive towards other mers, only the occasional staff member. You should get along well...right?

Except ghost takes one look at you, much smaller than he is with your external gills and makes the logical conclusion that you're a weird mer pup.

Now this strange new mer won't leave you alone, always circling around you and trying to curl over you when you sleep. He keeps calling for a pup even though there's clearly not one in the tank! Though...him bringing you food so often is nice...maybe you like him.

The workers, on the other hand, are coming to loathe ghost for the simple fact he refuses to let any of them near you. His instincts tell him to keep the pup safe after all, it doesn't matter of the pup is his or not!

"It'll be okay, sweetpea, just be strong for dada, okay?" He rumbles, baby tucked to his chest in the exam room. She's so small and excited, wide eyes taking in the new room, no idea what's about to happen.

But price does, and it tears him up inside.

The nurse has the needle out, and price has to fight the urge to tuck his little girl against his chest and hide her away. Instead, he nods with his face already red in upset and forces out "okay. Do it."

The reaction is instant, baby's hands curling into fists and face twisting with a cry. Wet, innocent eyes turning to stare at her papa as if asking why he did that to her.

The rest of the day, price is inseparable with her.

Keeps her cuddled up in his arms or right in front of him, eye's glassy with remorse. Even when you point out how your daughter has clearly moved on, smashing her toy trains together, he just furrows his brows.

Maybe this was the first reminder.

That some thing's he can never protect from pain. Not even his daughter. Not even you.

When he comes home to an empty house, gutted and trashed with bullet holes in the plaster and no signs of you or his kid, he will think of that exam room.

but also how else are you really supposed to read "if i could be born as something else, i'd want to be a bird so i could fly hehe. How about you? Oh you'd want to be a girl?"

like idk that does seem like something potentially a writer might think is normal to just throw in there, if they were particularly eggy
