This is doubtless because of his experience of the trenches in the Great War.

Here’s an image from the Battle of the Somme, in which Tolkien participated (image of soldiers standing above and inside a trench or earthwork in a grey wasteland; smoke from artillery is on the horizon)

So yeah: no trees = evil was Tolkien’s own direct lived experience. It’s precisely why Mordor and the wastelands around it look like they do in his books.

i was reading up on this short last night and i love this little excerpt

The film is notable for featuring a sort of "in-between" interpretation of Daffy. He is not necessarily the zany, impish interpretation used famously by Tex Avery and Bob Clampett, nor is he the greedy, self-centered version that Chuck Jones later popularized in the 1950s. As Paul Dini said in the DVD audio commentary for this cartoon: "[In this cartoon, Daffy] is really kind of almost like a sprite. He's just a little, almost elfin creature who's not really out to hurt anybody or has any ill will or malice toward anybody. He's just completely out of his mind."[2]

some of the wwii era looney tunes shorts are so funny because you have some announcer like “america’s defense effort! here we see our brave young men marching out to battle. go forth, heroes!” and then it shows porky fucking pig waddling around with an oversized rifle like “gee i sure hope i don’t step on any l-l-l-landmines :)”

You know I’m kinda in awe at how funny Looney Tunes was? Like it’s been almost a century and the humor still works so well. And Mel Blanc was such a good actor and the animation was so good I’m glad you’ve shown me how rad old cartoons were 🥺🥺

I FUCKING KNOW i’m BLOWN AWAY i didn’t give it a chance sooner. the humor is fucking impeccable. people who are like “4TH WALL BREAK!! 4TH WALL BREAK!!!!!” would be foaming at the mouths if they sat down and watched it. like it’s amazing i started watching the cartoons from as far back as 1937 and 82 years later they hold up so well. and RIGHT????? mel blanc was AMAZING it’s just SO BAFFLING TO ME that he voiced basically everyone. his every delivery is so spot on and great. and the animation is SUPERB the screenshots and even videos i post just don’t do it justice. i truly think it is one of the best animated cartoons to ever come out in this lifetime, ESPECIALLY during its golden age in the 40s. it holds up so well after all these years and i know will continue to hold up well. i’m glad i can help spread interest in it! i’m super happy i decided to watch it
