i could actually write an essay about the fact that snape being race swapped in the new harry potter series is racist in of itself and i think that was intentional. because letâs face it, itâs jkrâs world and thereâs nothing sheâd love more than reinforcing harmful stereotypes about people of color
like yes, letâs make the character who is constantly acting suspicious and is lowkey abusing children into a black man what a great idea. oh and the fact that said character gets hung by a tree at some pointâŚthat was totally coincidental. this isnât going to convey any sort of subtext to people at all.
like câmon they could have race swapped literally ANY OTHER character and it wouldâve been fine. anyways, i wasnât planning to watch that shit to begin with because iâm not giving money to that transphobe, and you shouldnât either (pirate if you really want to watch). but iâm still mad about this.
Imagine getting this angry just because Snape âa character who is fundamentally shaped by belonging to a marginalized, underprivileged backgroundâ is portrayed by a Black man, but not getting angry at all when he was portrayed by a white man and literally went through the same horrors, not because of race but because he was POOR, and you never cared because deep down youâre a disgusting classist who can handle a bunch of privileged white kids targeting a kid who canât even afford clothes. But the moment you can be called racist, suddenly you clutch your head. The problem isnât that thereâs a racist subtextâitâs that there has ALWAYS been a really fucked-up classist subtext, and you didnât care. Youâre fake social justice warriors, you should be ashamed of spouting this rhetoric. Clown.
you should write an essay about the new actor for snape being sent death threats and being harassed every single day, and how he has a âserious security teamâ because of it â since we all care a lot about racism. or is that only for show? i think arguing that he shouldnât be black is feeding into the racist rhetoric everyone is spewing based on fictional scenes, and that is just as harmful to an actual black person involved. and i genuinely beg everyone (ESPECIALLY if youâre nonblack poc or white) to see that this has become a real-world issue and not something that is fictional anymore. you guys thinking youâre so woke for this take while a black man is being threatened in real life.
and to dismantle the argument: iâm well aware of how snape being black makes the bullying look more sinister (the tree scene, in particular) and while there are other black students who the marauders are friends/acquaintances with â so we understand that snape is not being targeted due to his race â the negative connotations are still present and harry constantly being suspicious of snape looks odd, but the point is. none of it matters now because thatâs all fiction. paapa essiedu is being harassed in real life, right now and if you cared about black people/social justice issues, you would be talking about that
no human being should have death threats and such an extreme level of hate directed towards them. i was just speculating about a work of fiction that i feel really strongly about. but i completely agree that the lives and safety of real people is much more important than any fictional argument ever could be.
which, again, is why i think supporting this show while jkr uses the profits to harm trans people is morally wrong. i also hate to see this show or the conversation surrounding it harm black people.
i understand that this argument could easily get mixed in with those targeting the actor and show because they do not want to see a black person on screen, and i should have thought about that before posting.
