So I spent like 6 hours studying the wikipedia style guide and the four horsemen so I can do a fake wikipedia page for the characters in my novel Built for Sin. This is the result. It's not finished yet, obviously, because that's a lot of writing. But I'm super proud of it.

I achieved this layout in obsidian. I am using the retroma theme with a CSS snippet to make the headings & formatting Black + add that line under yhe large heading as well as a CSS snippet to allow obsidian to render the info block + render the picture in color (retroma theme automatically renders images in B&W)

The info block itself is HTML. Looks like this:

Anyway, it's a metric fuck ton of work but it might become a core element of my process. This is because writing about Mash'al in this style has taught me a lot more about him than if I'd just done a normal character sheet or a character study. I think it's because I can just write objective facts about him in a neutral way.

Highly recommend doing this if you have the time, energy, patience, and want to do so :)

It has just occured to me the bhagdad battery was found near where Mihrdāt is from. He's from Ctesiphon and it was found in Khujut Rabu, which is a village that was near Ctesiphon. It was likely created during the era in which he lived and, while we don't have an exact date, it's possible it was created during his life time.

I'm 100% aware it's not a battery and that it's likely they were used to store scrolls.

But also it would be really funny if Mihrdāt just casually goes "I thought you Greeks had a monopoly on explaining things that don't exist, but this local potter is giving your philosophers a run for their drachmae.”

And when Ikaros inevitably asks him wtf he's talking about he's like "Our Babylonian friends are getting creative again. One fellow is insisting that his jars can hold 'hidden fire' that doesn't burn. He’s trying to sell the palace on it as a new way to light the halls—as if we’re going to replace the oil lamps with a basement full of pickled copper"

The birthday for the protagonist of my main novel is coming up on the 16th. I'll probably write a short story for it, but I have a few plot ideas. What would y'all like to see?

Mash'al walks into the shop. His younger brother has organized a surprise party. He doesn't like surprises, but takes it in stride for Mahmoud and ends up having a good time.

He avoids telling Bazyli (love interest) his birthday until Bāqir (best friend) lets it slip the morning of. Bazyli is hurt by this and they do argue (as they are prone to do at this stage) but they make up, and share a nice night in. Probably smut.

He's having a bad day. Not his friend's faults. Not Bazyli's fault. But a bad day nonetheless. Hoping to make himself feel better, he makes the drive to Tower Hamlets to his parents house where he helps his mother around the house while his father is at work and his brother is at school. (Probably also hangs out with his grandparents a bit? His father's parents live with his parents.)

Mash'al manages to get through the day without celebrating his birthday. Bāqir shows up with some roasted lamb and spiced rice, basbousa, and medjool dates stuffed with tahini and sea salt, and they have a night in rewatching El Lemby (2002) and playing Magic: The Gathering until 3AM.

TBH my favorite is 4 and there's a high chance I'll write that, but I wanted to gather some opinions.

I am well! I haven't been posting much tbf. I'm currently out of my ADHD meds so I've been jumping around a total of like 11 projects (5 original novels, 5 fanfics, and 1 short story). The good news is both drownedrat fics are among these!

For With A Heavy Chain, A Faithful Servant Bound I'm reworking the characters a bit (I was doing more early Arthuriana but I wanted to do more French Romance Arthuriana. Mostly makes the knights more op and gives characters some silly powers) and I have a few partially done character studies.

For The Curious Case of Penwyth Manor I have a bit more! I'm slightly reworking Regulus (Was portraying him with the wrong subtype of NPD which completely changes the story), but I have part of two character studies and part of chapter one written. I did stop to do some research on NPD (specifically how ot was diagnosed and treated in the 80s + covert vs grandiose narcissism), historical building preservation in the late 80s, animal conservation in the late 80s, big game hunting in the late 60s (Thanks Orion), Catholicism vs Protestantism in the UK in the 80s and some other small bits and bobs.
