As much as I enjoy the Netflix series and generally like these characters on their own, I’ve always found the inclusion or Jacqueline and Larry Your Waiter and even the changes made to Olivia Caliban to undermine the core theme of the adults in the Baudelaire lives constantly failing them. If anything TPP makes in explicit that in the best case scenario for VFD children are put in precarious situations. And all the attempts to make these adults competent can only go so far because it would interfere with The Word of God. Like the banality of the Baudelaires predicament is that they’re failed by both their Allies and their adversaries at every turn - coincidentally the same lesson lemony learns by the end of ATWQ

Thought about this more and to me the most egregious instance of this is the rewrite of Olivia Caliban. The whole point was that her people pleasing tendencies (and many adults general tendency to avoid conflict with other adults) are what jeopardize the Baudelaires lives so the librarian rewrite was especially egregious - even more so when you consider what happens to actually competent librarians like Dashiell Qwerty

your life is not an optimization problem

as in you'll never achieve the perfect daily routine, sleep schedule, coping mechanisms, mannerisms, fashion sense etc. even after years and years of healing and improvement and self-discovery. you will never be so good at life that you manage to utilize every waking moment. its great to be productive and all but sometimes you'll suck ass. sometimes you'll take eight hours to be done with a twenty minute job. you'll prioritize the wrong thing. you'll sleep for 12 hrs just to avoid being awake. you'll relapse. and you'll relapse again. you'll forget to turn in the assignment. you'll order too little food. life is far too large and complex for you to even experience it completely, much less try to make sense of and control it. you can't. please give up on that and be at peace with the hours you lose. they are not separate from your life.
