He’d have to maneuver himself around to be able to see out of it, and at Dakota’s request, he wiggles his long limbs around to do so. “There’s been a lot of really weird things happening on this ship though that I can’t explain. You’ve only been here a week, but it’s been four months of bullshit for me, to be honest.” Jude pauses with a huff, body twisted uncomfortably.
“And I can deal with bullshit, that’s just what you sign up for working night security. The bullshit on this ship is just a whole breed of its own. Oh, the name’s Jude by the way.” It wasn’t the most flattering of introductions, twisted in a heap trying to peer out of the gap stuck in a locked closet, but maybe he’d come out of this situation with a new confidante on this ship.
Cheek pressed to the cool floor, Jude couldn’t see much. A long, empty hallway. He tried to conjure the ship layout in his mind to figure out where they could possibly be.
“I can’t really see much, honestly,” Jude says, neck aching as he glanced through the gap. There was a long hallway. Other doors. No people in sight. “I can’t even tell what part of the ship this is-“
The heavy THUD of a footstep makes Jude cut himself off. He feels the vibrations where his cheek connects with the floor. More follow, slow and dragging. THUD. THUD. THUD.
Jude’s muscles were protesting his current position but he strained to see, trying to identify where the approaching sound was coming from. Something was wrong. The floor was shaking with each step. Even Artem’s footfalls are ballerina-like compared to this. There was something inhuman about it.
The slow, heavy steps continue as Jude’s neck can’t take the position anymore and he sits back up. He looks to Dakota, concern knitting his brows together.
“I couldn’t see anything but…” The light overhead shook with another THUD. “I think something’s out there.”
Dakota squints. “Maybe a week and a half…?” It wasn’t a very long time at all, but her companion’s confusion at the very least matches her own. She’s not really sure why she’s here. She just is.
She shrinks back against the wall, turning her feet to the side to give him as much room as she can manage. Night security. He might be a small problem for late-night expeditions. Or an asset, if he’s willing to turn a blind eye. It’s not like she’s planning on stealing anything. Is that how he got the scar on his face, she wonders?
“You’ve only been here a week, but it’s been four months of bullshit for me, to be honest.”
They laugh despite themself. At least he’s honest. It’s appreciated. “I mean, it hasn’t been a bad week! Just a weird one. But you’ve been here for four months. On purpose. Have weird things been happening the whole time?”
“The bullshit on this ship is just a whole breed of its own.” They pause, briefly unsettled, but the man keeps talking and Dakota’s sharp anxiety settles down again. He isn’t accusatory, his attention fixed on the hallway outside.
Jude. It was a nice name for a nice person. Most of the people she’s spoken to thus far have been immaterial, breezing through conversation without ever meaning any of the things they said, and only a week in, it was starting to feel lonely.
She likes Jude.
She doesn’t like the way he frowns. It takes a moment to hear it: the slow, steady thump of something dragging itself along the polished floor. It isn’t the neat footsteps of a predator. It’s the heavy lurching shuffle of something fighting against its own body and this planet’s gravity. “It sounds like something walking,” she whispers. No vibrations, no heat detection, no pheromones… Trapped in this tiny box, she’s uncomfortably aware of how little humans can actually sense.

Accepting the security gig on the cruise ship was supposed to be a fresh start. A reset. Something he’s no stranger to. He’d left behind a life that wasn’t working for him. Abandoned people he cared about and let go of what he had just started to rebuild. Once things had started going poorly, disappearing just seemed like the best option again.
Well, maybe not best. But it was easier than dealing with the mess he was in.
Now, he’s put himself into a different situation with no easy way out. It started out fresh and exciting, but something was very wrong. His agency didn’t give him a lot of details on the investigation, and he had his guard up all the time.
Things just didn’t make sense here.
People appeared and disappeared. He could swear he’s seen grotesque monstrosities in the dark corners of the CCTV footage that vanish when he blinks. He’s dreamt of blood-streaked corridors that smell of rot. Feels hostility emanating from certain guests and crew alike. He’s never been a paranoid person. He likes to think he follows instinct and evidence, but he can’t justify the deep unease in his chest being here when he hasn't seen much.
“Am I finally losing it?” Jude wonders with a humourless laugh.
Then, with a blink, the bed disappears from beneath him. Plunged into darkness.
He lets out a short yell as he starts to fall backwards and his back hits a wall behind him. Heart-racing, he scrambles, catching his arm against the hard surface and reaching out in front of him, only to find another wall. The sound of things clattering – plastic, things filled with liquid falling over with a watery thud, chemical clean scents.
As he tries to regain his balance, he becomes aware that there is someone else in this small room with him and they are very close. The space feels cramped, and he feels his legs and arms make contact with this presence in the dark. He tries to shift to give space but finds that there really isn’t much room to work with. At all.
“Hey, are you… What just happened?” Jude’s at a loss for words. He tries to straighten himself up and –
“Ow.” His head makes contact with a hard surface just above him. He didn’t hit it hard, but enough to make him huff. What was this? It was pitch dark in here.
“Oh, wait a sec –“ It was times like these that he was glad he started smoking again. He pat his pockets until he found his lighter. Pulling it out, he turned it around in his hand, trying to feel for the igniter before it slipped from his fingers, falling unseen in the darkness to the floor with a couple sad clatters.
Jude let out an exhausted groan. He had felt so smart for a second too.
“Can you help me find my lighter so we can see? I just dropped it like a dumbass.”

It’s near enough to this planet to require an ointment compounded specifically to prevent solar radiation burns, something that leaves a chemically sweet smell clinging to her skin, though she finds it oddly pleasant.
They’re considering the areas of the ship they have yet to explore when the world disappears with a burst of darkness. It feels like a blink that had somehow gone wrong. For the shortest of moments, it felt like the gravity was failing. Did this ship even have a gravity reactor?
The railing they were leaning on simply evaporates. Dakota’s arms shoot out automatically for balance and she collides with something hard and unyielding. There’s a wall behind her. She twists to put her back against it. Her palm hits something else, something warm, and it takes a moment of uncertain patting before she realizes it’s a person.
Her yelp is deafening in the confined space. The other person in the room grumbles as they collide with, presumably, the other wall.
“Hello-?”
She brings her hands to her face— nothing seems to be amiss. Dakota blinks. She blinks again. The darkness doesn’t change.
“I can’t see,” she says with confidence, remembering belatedly that she should probably sound a bit more uncertain. Oops. It only takes a few moments of concentration to adapt her vision to a lightless environment. The tiny space blooms into shades of grey and white heat, a ghostly silhouette on the wall where the other passenger had been leaning. Ah. There we go.

It doesn’t help to distinguish the various shapes falling on them both— but she can at least see the other passenger. They’re taller than she is. Dakota’s own body is glowing from the heat of the sun from the lido deck, though they’re quickly starting to darken as they cool off. Their hands are still relatively distinct from the ambient temperature of the room.
“Lighter. Okay, yes. Just, uh… don’t move?”
The lighter practically glows on the cold floor. She extends one leg, tapping her shoe as she tries to brace herself against the opposite wall— oh, that’s not a lot of space at all— before lowering herself into an awkward crouch. Her fingertips graze the little contraption before she can drag it close enough to grab. It’s warm to the touch.
“Found it!”
It’s easier to stand up, though she has to step between the other passenger’s feet and then lean back so she’s not pressed flush against their chest. She paws at the air, missing intentionally as she grazes their forearm and then ‘finds’ her way to their hand. Truthfully, she isn’t quite sure what a lighter is, though she can guess based on its name.
Jude doesn’t plan on arguing with the voice in the dark. Where ever they were, it was claustrophobic. He could feel the warmth coming off their skin, especially as they shifted in the confined space. Limbs shifting in the dark, he could feel their breath and hear the light thud of their own back against the wall, followed by the slide as he assumed she scoured the dark floor for his lighter.
“Found it!”
That was quick. Jude is impressed, still blinking and trying to get his eyes to adjust even slightly to the darkness but there must have been absolutely no light here. It wasn’t too surprising, given all the nooks and crannies that existed on the Sapphire of the Seas below deck, but… Again, how did he even get here from sitting in his cabin?
His companion in the dark touches his arm, pulling him out of his thoughts. Their hand follows the length of his arm down to his hand, leaving a light trail of goosebumps along the way. The warm metal of his lighter is clasped into his fingers. This time, he’ll keep a tighter grip.
“Where are we?”
“No clue, but hopefully seeing will help,” Jude replies, carefully turning the lighter in his hand to find the igniter. This time, he keeps a tight grip as he rolls the wheel quickly. The first two times, he only gets small sparks the shine in the dark, but the third time, a small, steady flames illuminate the confined space.
The glow of the flame reveals… that they are in a really small space.
All he can see is walls and his new… friend of unusual circumstances. Someone he doesn’t recognize. Great, another new guest? Where do they keep coming from? He holds the flame carefully between them, mindful of their closeness, glancing around the small space. Mop bucket, broom, a few knocked over jugs and spray bottles…
The other passenger sounds unconcerned if someone puzzled. That’s good. Dakota doesn’t feel like they’re in any particular danger. It’s just odd.
She winces at the bright glare of heat, trying to shift her primary vision back to visible light so it isn’t blinding by the time her companion gets the lighter’s flame to stabilize. Squinting is a universally acceptable response to sudden light. The other person has paler skin and short dark hair aside from a shock of white to one side. (It looks nice, Dakota thinks. Humans decorated themselves in such interesting ways.) They have a few scars on their face and on their arms. Whatever the marks are from, they’re all proof of survival, so Dakota automatically likes them.
She twists to peer up at the closet space above them, mindful not to let her hair get too close to the lighter. That’s a mistake she’s only had to make once. The thing touching the top of her head slides further; it appears to be a roll of paper towels that she lets fall to the ground.
“… yeeees?” Dakota hazards, wondering if this was a trick question. There’s nothing else the space could feasibly be. They push a mop handle back into the corner so that it’s away from their arm. Confined spaces didn’t bother her in the slightest— she sought them out on occasion, crawling her way through the vents to find somewhere to nap— but the random items falling all around them are fairly irritating.
“I was kind of hoping you’d know?” Jude responds, eyes following the paper towel roll as it falls from where it was balanced on his closet companion’s head. “I was just in my cabin and then I blinked and wound up here. The only explanation that makes sense is I fell asleep and am having a weird dream right now.”
Somewhat distractedly, he felt along the wall, feeling the edge where the door's outline was until his hand clasped around the handle. Jiggling it to no avail, he sighed, muttering, “Yeah, that would’ve been too easy, I guess.”

This could have been a lot worse. Whatever this was, the timing was forgiving. Five minutes earlier, he would have been here in his underwear and what an HR conversation that would have been. If he even made it that far; he wouldn’t have blamed the person across from for getting panicked and lashing out. That might even be a normal reaction to finding yourself teleported into a closet with a random guy, even with clothes on.

“Well.” Jude starts, leaning back against the wall. There’s not really much he can do to get comfortable in the limited space, so he chooses to settle in, sliding down until his butt hits the ground and positions his legs as unobtrusively as possible. “If we bang on the door and yell, we might get lucky and catch someone passing by who can help us out. Though, if I’m currently asleep, maybe I really need the nap and this is some kinda metaphor for being forced to face my issues.” He looked up at the stranger across from where he sat. They didn’t look like anyone he knew. Not from his past, nor other people on the cruise. They smelled of sunscreen and, from their moments of contact, they had felt real despite the surreal circumstances.
“So, what’s your deal?” Jude decided on. “Are you a guest enjoying the cruise or are you a figment of my imagination here to teach me a valuable lesson?”
The man continues talking, filling the tiny space with the reverberations of his voice. Dakota likes the way it sounds. He was asleep and then suddenly he was here. She’s quiet for a few moments before she looks at the man on the ground with sudden interest. “Hey, can you see anything out there?”
If there’s enough of a gap between the door and the ground, she should be able to squeeze through and open it from the other side. She’d just have to ask very politely to turn off the light. That’s a reasonable request, she thinks.

People appeared and disappeared. He could swear he’s seen grotesque monstrosities in the dark corners of the CCTV footage that vanish when he blinks. He’s dreamt of blood-streaked corridors that smell of rot. Feels hostility emanating from certain guests and crew alike. He’s never been a paranoid person. He likes to think he follows instinct and evidence, but he can’t justify the deep unease in his chest being here when he hasn't seen much.
“Am I finally losing it?” Jude wonders with a humourless laugh.
Then, with a blink, the bed disappears from beneath him. Plunged into darkness.
He lets out a short yell as he starts to fall backwards and his back hits a wall behind him. Heart-racing, he scrambles, catching his arm against the hard surface and reaching out in front of him, only to find another wall. The sound of things clattering – plastic, things filled with liquid falling over with a watery thud, chemical clean scents.
As he tries to regain his balance, he becomes aware that there is someone else in this small room with him and they are very close. The space feels cramped, and he feels his legs and arms make contact with this presence in the dark. He tries to shift to give space but finds that there really isn’t much room to work with. At all.
“Hey, are you… What just happened?” Jude’s at a loss for words. He tries to straighten himself up and –
“Ow.” His head makes contact with a hard surface just above him. He didn’t hit it hard, but enough to make him huff. What was this? It was pitch dark in here.
“Oh, wait a sec –“ It was times like these that he was glad he started smoking again. He pat his pockets until he found his lighter. Pulling it out, he turned it around in his hand, trying to feel for the igniter before it slipped from his fingers, falling unseen in the darkness to the floor with a couple sad clatters.
Jude let out an exhausted groan. He had felt so smart for a second too.
“Can you help me find my lighter so we can see? I just dropped it like a dumbass.”
The ship is certainly a strange one. Dakota has been here for approximately a week — she has a room where she stays and a little plastic card with her assumed name on it that allows her to purchase things. From talking to the other passengers, she’s pieced together that this is an excursion for leisure. What a novel concept.
Dakota is leaning on the rail of the lido deck, staring out at the landmass they were leaving behind across a vast expanse of water. The local star warms her exposed skin. It’s near enough to this planet to require an ointment compounded specifically to prevent solar radiation burns, something that leaves a chemically sweet smell clinging to her skin, though she finds it oddly pleasant.
They’re considering the areas of the ship they have yet to explore when the world disappears with a burst of darkness. It feels like a blink that had somehow gone wrong. For the shortest of moments, it felt like the gravity was failing. Did this ship even have a gravity reactor?
The railing they were leaning on simply evaporates. Dakota’s arms shoot out automatically for balance and she collides with something hard and unyielding. There’s a wall behind her. She twists to put her back against it. Her palm hits something else, something warm, and it takes a moment of uncertain patting before she realizes it’s a person.
Her yelp is deafening in the confined space. The other person in the room grumbles as they collide with, presumably, the other wall.
“Hello-?”
She brings her hands to her face— nothing seems to be amiss. Dakota blinks. She blinks again. The darkness doesn’t change.
“I can’t see,” she says with confidence, remembering belatedly that she should probably sound a bit more uncertain. Oops. It only takes a few moments of concentration to adapt her vision to a lightless environment. The tiny space blooms into shades of grey and white heat, a ghostly silhouette on the wall where the other passenger had been leaning. Ah. There we go.
Where are we?
It doesn’t help to distinguish the various shapes falling on them both— but she can at least see the other passenger. They’re taller than she is. Dakota’s own body is glowing from the heat of the sun from the lido deck, though they’re quickly starting to darken as they cool off. Their hands are still relatively distinct from the ambient temperature of the room.
“Lighter. Okay, yes. Just, uh… don’t move?”
The lighter practically glows on the cold floor. She extends one leg, tapping her shoe as she tries to brace herself against the opposite wall— oh, that’s not a lot of space at all— before lowering herself into an awkward crouch. Her fingertips graze the little contraption before she can drag it close enough to grab. It’s warm to the touch.
“Found it!”
It’s easier to stand up, though she has to step between the other passenger’s feet and then lean back so she’s not pressed flush against their chest. She paws at the air, missing intentionally as she grazes their forearm and then ‘finds’ her way to their hand. Truthfully, she isn’t quite sure what a lighter is, though she can guess based on its name.
