My beloved rabbit (best friend) died 5 days ago. This is my first experience with grief and I am NOT OK.
âI do lifesaving training every weekend. Sometimes we have races where we have to paddle out to buoys in the middle of the ocean. There was one really tough race a few weeks ago. The ocean was messy like today but the waves were even bigger. And there were lots of bluebottles. Those are like Jellyfish but worse. My dad said that I didnât have to race, and half of the competitors dropped out, but I chose to do it anyway because I wanted to prove that I could be a lifeguard. On the outside I was ready to go but on the inside I was really nervous. Once the race started, some of the girls turned back because the waves were so big, and others were nose-diving and falling off their boards. But I made it all the way to the end and got fourth place. Everyone was congratulating me because fourth place is huge for me.â

New study describes how dopamine tells you it isnât worth the wait
How do we know if it was worth the wait in line to get a meal at the new restaurant in town? To do this our brain must be able to signal how good the meal tastes and associate this feeling with the restaurant. This is done by a small group of cells deep in the brain that release the chemical dopamine. The amount of dopamine released by these cells can influence our decisions by telling us how good a reward will be in the future. For example, more dopamine is released to the smell of a cake baking relative to the smell of leftovers. But does waiting change how dopamine is released?
A new study in Cell Reports by Matthew Wanat, assistant professor of biology at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), sheds light on how dopamine cells in the brain signal the passage of time. Wanatâs study used a technique called voltammetry to record dopamine release in rodents trained using Pavlovian conditioning. This task used two different tones that both predicted the delivery of a food reward. One tone was presented only after a short wait while the other tone was presented only after a long wait. Wanat and colleagues found that more dopamine was released to the short wait tone. These results highlight that when dopamine neurons respond to cues, faster is better.
âThe big question that weâre focusing on is to identify the brain signals that influence the decisions we make,â Wanat said. âMany decisions are based upon comparing the value between cues associated with different rewards. There is a lot of evidence to suggest that these dopamine signals and external cues provide useful value-related signals that could inform our decisions to engage in a behavior.â Â
While Wanat and his collaborators are interested in studying how dopamine release is involved with cues triggering behavior, their work could also inform the understanding of drug addiction, which is closely intertwined with dopamine. Drug addiction can âhijackâ the brain regions where dopamine is released. âBy figuring out how the dopamine system works in normal and abnormal circumstances, we could potentially identify important changes and the ways that could target the dopamine system to rectify the consequences of those behaviors,â Wanat said.
âA lot has been said about the role of dopamine in reward, but reward is only really important in the context of making choices. Dr. Wanatâs experiments allow direct measurement of dopamine acting in the brain during the process of choosing, and reveals how the brain decides the values of our choices,â said Charles Wilson, Ewing Halsell Distinguished Chair in Biology.
Wanatâs overarching research focuses on the brainâs relationships with memory, stress and drug addiction and how those components interact with each other. He is a member of the UTSA Neurosciences Institute, a multidisciplinary research organization for integrated brain studies with the mission to foster a collaborative community of scientists committed to studying the biological basis of human experience and behavior and the origin and treatment of nervous system diseases.
Wanat is one of 40 brain health researchers at UTSA, a group that includes experts in neurodegenerative disease, brain circuits and electrical signaling, traumatic brain injury, regenerative medicine, stem cell therapies, medicinal chemistry, neuroinflammation, drug design and psychology. Together, they are collaborating on complex, large-scale research producing a greater understanding of the brainâs complexity and the factors that cause its decline.

Things Iâm weird about:
-people holding/using my phone if I havenât had the chance to erase history, texts, pictures, etc
-being invited to spend the night at someoneâs house. I used to love it as a kid/teen because it meant freedom but now it just means more time away from my pets, wondering what there is to eat, being judged for sleeping in, not having enough blankets/pillows, not knowing how to operate the shower, being tempted to keep someone awake, not having my face wash, being around people in general, and I canât be naked.
im mad these are all bangers
Today is my first day of intermittent fasting! (16:8 schedule) My eating window is 12pm-8pm.
I had a protein shake, and binged on some BBQ. I probably consumed over 2,000 calories, but iâm hoping to make up for it with an ab workout before bed.Â
These photos were taken around one year apart. One year.
Can you imagine living your life without teeth?
https://www.gofundme.com/toothless-and-desperate
Have a brief example of what youâd experience:
- Unable to eat properly, your health and physical well-being suffers significantly and this shortens your life over time. If youâre like me and have weak jaws, youâll likely not be able to chew well; youâre going to be swallowing lumps of things, which is uncomfortable, gross, and unhealthy.
-Eating can be very painful, to the point youâre going to be eating soup, mashed potatoes, or cream of wheat for at least a few meals.
-Self-confidence tanks, and so can your mental health; this has really f*cked me up, leaving me intensely depressed to the point where Iâve pretty much cried for entire days, not to mention trying to adjust to this nightmare that has become my life.
- Dentures generally need to be pasted into your mouth (the paste doesnât usually last that well, and isnât a fix-all. It also tastes pretty foul.) and tend to cause anything from mild discomfort to bad pain.
- You donât get to eat anything sticky, chewy, etc.; no more toffee, gum, unprocessed meat, salad (yes, even things like lettuce and spinach are VERY difficult to eat. And, forget fresh fruit and veggies. Too firm,
- No biting with your front teeth. Â
- There is no real âresting placeâ for your lower jaw - itâs uncomfortable and even painful to have your gums pressed together, and letting your lower jaw relax and âhangâ is almost as bad.
- Have you heard someone speak without teeth? Youâre liable to repeat things A LOT and feel self-conscious and stupid.
-People will shun you, or give you repulsed looks.
-Try looking for work when you look like I do, all gums and no teeth. No way youâre getting an interview or a call back.

Not to mention that your JAWS SHRINK and make it even more difficult to eat/speak and are prone to FRACTURING.
Thatâs why I am on my knees, begging and praying for the donations I so desperately need to replace my teeth with implants.
Implants act like REAL TEETH and I could eat/speak as before and my jaws would stop shrinking. But, I live in poverty and am disabled. I canât afford it alone. Iâm scared this is going to be the end of me.

8k out of 29k as of December 21st.
As of March 16, thanks to the sheer kindness and generosity of some amazing people, my surgery fund is at $28,160 of $32,130 goal!
Iâm grateful beyond words to everyone whoâs donated, sent kind words, and/or spread the word so far! It means so much to me.
There is still a bit to raise, so if you could donate a little bit or reblog/share the link, thatâd be super cool of you!
âWe were married for three years. But my parents never approved of her. They didnât think she was good enough. They always told me: âYou can date her, but donât marry her.â And she didnât like them either. She didnât like to be around them because she always felt judged. Things really got bad after our daughter was born. She didnât want to live in my hometown. She didnât come along when I went home to visit. We got in a huge fight about it one day. I started saying bad words to her, and eventually I said: âLetâs just end it.â It was an emotional decision. We have three types of divorces in our religionâ and I chose the most final. Which means we are never allowed to remarry. Afterwards it felt like a dream. I shouldnât have acted so quickly. I spoke with her recently and both of us regret the decision. My daughter barely recognizes me when I visit. But what can we do? We canât go against the rules of God.â (Jakarta Indonesia)

May you find exactly what you want at the thrift shop, in your price range, next time youâre there.
canât pass up this kinda karma
Iâm really good at Battleship, and I wanna put it on my resume.Â
âEvery time I see a machine, I want to open it up and know how it works. Iâve wanted to be an engineer since childhood. I was planning to study mechanical engineering at a specific university, and I was quite confident that Iâd get accepted into the school. But my application was rejected. It was devastating. I was at a friendâs house when I found out. Both of us applied, so we checked our results at the same time, but only she was accepted. I went straight home and cried. I didnât talk to my friends for months. I know that worse things happen to people, but it was a big deal for me. I felt like Iâd lost my chance to be somebody. That was three years ago. Now Iâm about to graduate from a different school. It took some time, but I ended up making the best of the situation. Iâm getting a degree in computer science. It might not be mechanical engineering, but itâs engineering. Every machine needs a computer. So Iâm proud of how things turned out. I didnât get my exact dream, but I made the best of my remaining options.â (Dhaka, Bangladesh)
:( thereâs still time!Â
the best pranks are the super harmless ones
like why would you pull someones pants down in public or like put them in danger or humiliate them when you can just baffle them by leaving tiny plastic camels all over their house or taping bill cosbyâs face over every single face in  every picture in their house?
Last year the seniors had a mariachi band follow the principle for 3 hours
Confuse, donât abuse ;)
MY NEW MOTTO
The best prank I ever pulled was to a college roommate. April 1st was approaching, and I told my roommate that I was going to prank him. He responded that he had classes that morning and afternoon and a gaming group that night and that we wouldnât even see each other that day. I responded that his room wasnât going anywhere. He said he would just lock his room and there was nothing I could do about it.
What he didnât know is that I had a key to his room.
So, on the evening of April 1, I unlocked his door, left it barely ajar, and did absolutely nothing else.
When my roommate got back that night, I heard him go to his door, say âoh noâ in a horrified way, and carefully enter his room.
He then spent a good hour searching his room (fruitlessly, obvs) for pranks.
Iâll never do better than that.
action movie about a guy who pretends to be a hitman and does the whole â25% up front and the rest when the job is doneâ thing but then just keeps the down payment, doesnât kill anybody, and stops responding to the clientâs calls, knowing that they canât sue him for breach of contract without confessing to trying to hire a hitman. problem is now a lot of people who are comfortable with the concept of paying someone to kill someone else are mad at him

OH MY GOD whyyyy did no one tell me youâre supposed to send thank-yous after interviews?? Why would I do that???
âThank you for this incredibly stressful 30 minutes that I have had to re-structure my entire day around and which will give me anxiety poos for the next 24 hours.â
I HATE ETIQUETTE ITâS THE MOST IMPOSSIBLE THING FOR ME TO LEARN WITHOUT SOMEONE DIRECTLY TELLING ME THIS SHIT
NO ONE TOLD YOU???? WTF! I HAVE FAILED YOU. Also: Dear ______: Thank you so much for the opportunity to sit down with you (&________) to discuss the [insert job position]. I am grateful to be considered for the position. I think I will be a great fit at [company name], especially given my experience in __________. [insert possible reference to something you talked about, something that excited you.] I look forward to hearing from you [and if you are feeling super confident: and working together in the future]. Sincerely, @mellivorinae
THIS IS A LIFESAVING TEMPLATE
YOU ARE WELCOME
My brother got a really great paid internship one summer. The guy who hired him said the deciding factor was the professional thank you letter my brother sent after the interview.
should it be an email? or like a physical letter?
email, you want to send it within a few hours at max after the interview if you can so itâs fresh in their mind who you are.Â
Confirmed! I interviewed for a job right after arriving in NY. The interview went incredibly well, and I went home and immediately wrote a thank you letter and put it in the mail. I had a super good feeling about this interview.
I didnât get the job.
However, a few weeks later, I was called in to interview with another editor in the same company, and I did get that job. I found out later from the initial editor (the one who didnât hire me) that he had planned to offer me the job, but since I didnât follow up with a thank you letter, he assumed I didnât really want it. He offered the job to another contenderâbut when he got my letter in the mail shortly after the offer had already been made, he went to HR and gave me a glowing recommendation. It was based on that recommendation that I got called in for the second interview.
So: send an email thank you immediately (same day!) after the interview. If youâre feeling extra, go ahead and send a written one too. OR go immediately to a coffee shop, write the letter, and return to the office and give it to the secretary.
Either way, those letters are important.
Pro tip: If you really want HR to develop a personal interest in your application, publicly thank them on linkedin. Just make a short post telling your network about how X recruiter really went above and beyond to make you feel welcome, or about how be accommodating and professional they were, or whatever. Make sure to use the mention feature so theyâll get a notification and see it.Â
Flattery will get you everywhere⌠and public flattery that might make its way back to their manager, doubly so.
Obligatory plug for one of FreePrintable.netâs sites: ThankYouLetter.ws. They have a whole section with interview thank you letter templates, and a page with specific tips for interview thank you letters. (There are also tons of other letter templates if you browse around a bit.)
yea i actually got my youth city council position because i took notes and sent in a handwritten thank you card!!
Sure his degree might say âMDâ but those years of school and training were really preparing my friend Chuck for this one, singular, moment: Babyâs First Fingernail Trim.
