Every time I see a discussion about Obsession online, I see people try to find the real victim of the movie... Like- The real, most innocent victim of all the characters.
I see people sympathizing with Sarah, with Ian, with the music shop owner- And what I find truly fascinating is how surprisingly often I see people leave Nikki out of the conversation.
You know why? Is because Nikki is not an innocent victim, not in the way people would've preferred her to be. Nikki got aggressive and extremely volatile during the whole movie, she was angry and weird and gross and sad and frustrating!- And both the characters in the movie and the people in the real world saw her behavior as something too repulsive to be worthy of a "True Victim".
Like- Is anyone else finding the discussions online both miserable and fascinating?! Nikki got sexually assaulted, had her literal autonomy taken from her and yet I keep seeing people act as if she can't be the victim of Bear's actions because she got violent in response to his abuse!!! Like-
Okay, the movie isn't PERFECT, I find the ending very disappointing in fact- But like-?!?!?!! It's such an interesting social experiment??!? Victims of sexual abuse constantly go through this in real life, so I shouldn't be surprised that most people are trying to find a way to diminish and invalidate Nikki's experiences- Yet even in this calculated fantasy scenario, where Bear is put in such an obvious position of douchebag, there's still people debating WHO was truly affected by Bear's wish and actions ?!??!?
I'm not saying Sarah and Ian had to die, obviously not- But when I see online people explaining the reason WHY they're the true victims is actually just so interesting??
Bear used Sarah to make Nikki jealous, and that she got killed for his own cowardice and lust, the movie implies many times that Bear is such a fuckin loser that he'll actively choose the worst options possible just to get a reaction out of Nikki! Even when he KNOWS she is NOT going to react ""gently"" about it!!
Ian is a dick, but I find it fascinating how he may have dated Nikki before Bear- And how his horrible advice can be seen as him being an idiot and a bad boyfriend who used to call her by a terrible nickname thinking she was fine with it when she clearly wasn't- Or, Ian was purposefully sabotaging Bear... The movie doesn't make that clear and I find it so, so, so interesting!! I like how he would genuinely share the money he wished for with Bear tho, lmao.
But yeah no, I still think Nikki deserved better
