Noctis hasn’t even had time to take a seat at his desk when the pounding on his study door starts. He pauses. And sighs. But ultimately, he can’t bring himself to feel especially put out as he turns back towards the door. As he opens it, he’s thankful that it opens inward.

Noctis didn’t quite slap Ardyn’s hand away. The older man pulled away just in time when he saw the flicker of movement, an old habit from the days when thieves could risk losing a hand if they were caught. It still had the intended result however, with the old thief quickly backing away from the bedside table.
“Ah, terribly sorry highness, I only meant to examine it.” He smiled apologetically, “Does the little toy have special meaning to you?”
Noct retracts his hand with a jerk, as if the initial attempt to slap Ardyn’s hand away hadn’t been entirely conscious. He glances aside and hunches slightly, shoving his hands into his pockets, embarrassed in the same way as a preteen being caught with a teddy bear.
“Dad gave it to me,” he answers, voice half a step up from a mumble. “When I was little.”

Noctis’s expression goes carefully blank, in that way it always used to when he was at banquets he didn’t want to be at as a teenager. “You’re not supposed to go messing with peoples things without permission, Novus,” he points out levelly, before asking cautiously, “Who helped you? And was it just my closet, or your mom’s, too?”

“Well it is your name Som!” He said with a laugh, and he seemed a much younger man than he actually was in the moment. But then he frowned, as if realizing something about what he said wasn’t right. He had to pause for a moment, taking in the area they were in and realizing it wasn’t the right place for that name. The city was too new, and the boy beside him dressed unlike the young king from so many centuries before.
“No, no that’s not right is it? You’re Noctis.” He rubs his eyes and suddenly seems quite tired, “Well. You still look better with a flower in your hair.”Â
Noct’s eyes narrow slightly in concern that’s hardly even masked. For a split second, he feels a ridiculous urge to bring a hand to Ardyn’s forehead, because when you know Ignis for going on 17 years, occasionally some habits get absorbed by osmosis.
He does not do that, thankfully. Instead he asks, cautiously, “...Tell me about him?” like he isn’t quite sure it’s the right thing to say. “Other than the fact that he looks like me--or, I guess I look like him.”
