In ME1 they’re so young. I mean yeah Shepard is like 30, Garrus is like 25, and Liara is like 100 , but they’re so young. Garrus’ “fuck the rules” attitude, Liara’s lack of self confidence, Shepard’s cocky little smirk after Sovereign is defeated. They’re young and inexperienced. High on victory and unaware of what is to come.

And you contrast them with their ME3 selves and they’re so much more weary. They’re so tired, and beat down, and just exhausted by what the last few years have wrought on them. You really get the sense that this massive weight has been placed on them and they’re so tired after holding it up for so long.

They’re all just kids when the story starts, regardless of their actual ages, and by the end Garrus, Liara, and Shepard are, respectively, The Turian representative to the galactic Reaper response and the second most important Turian in the galaxy, the most powerful and influential person in the galaxy save one maybe, and the maybe in that “Save one maybe” as the rallying point for the galactic response to the apocalypse and ultimately the one who saves the galaxy.

The growth that happens in these three as the series goes on is INSANE. It’s one of the greatest achievements in video game storytelling as far as I’m concerned. The three of them are the core of the entire Mass Effect series and their personal growth from bright eyed saviors of the galaxy to worn down, beaten down, soul tired people that Just Refuse To Stop is just... I have no words. I love this series so much
