well, yes, to be a leftist, you must oppose imperialism and colonialism in all its forms and understand the world through a historical materialist lens. seeing the US on some kind of equal playing field with the global south where we can fairly evaluate morality based on rights for women and lgbtq people is liberalism at its finest—an ideology with no historical materialist understandings of the world. that’s the difference between a leftist and a liberal. a liberal has no understanding of why the world looks the way it does, a leftist does. the USA is a hegemonic superpower which has gained its strength and wealth through exploitation. current imperialism is an advanced stage in capitalism, and in many ways, it is the continuation of previous colonial legacies.
focusing on the fact that x or y country doesn’t have lgbtq rights or women’s rights while the US and other imperial countries do as a way to evaluate the morality of the global south compared to the global north is pinkwashing. it completely ignores what differing historical conditions led these countries to this point in time. you cannot evaluate the US and other countries on an equal playing field because they do not have access to the same resources. unlike the US and other countries in the global north, the global south has been denied the right to develop freely on their own. economic changes are deeply intertwined with and consequential in shifting social/cultural attitudes and laws. due to their economic progression on the backs of enslaved and colonized people, the global north has developed economically, and because of that, they’ve also seen social and cultural shifts. however, due to forced technological stagnation, deindustrialization, and the overall underdevelopment of the global south at the hands of the global north during colonialism, the global south has not had this same opportunity. acting as though we can understand the politics in countries in isolation from imperialism is completely ahistorical. not only does it fail to understand the root of the issue, but as a consequence, it will also fail to lead to any meaningful liberation for anyone—whether women, lgbtq, or whoever. lgbtq people of the global south have talked about how they are people of the global south before they are lgbtq because of the way imperialism and colonialism heavily construct lives and conditions.
so, to reiterate: if you have a historical materialist analysis, you understand how colonialism and imperialism have led these countries to their respective points in cultural politics. the global south must firstly be free from imperialism and colonialism, existing independently without being exploited for US and European interests before anything else will follow. the US empire, as the main global hegemonic imperialist power today, which currently wages war, genocide, brutal sanctions, and continues to support itself off of the economic and sexual exploitation of the global south is therefore an enemy and must fall for there to be any semblance of progression towards true equality.
