Sprites are ancient magical beings, typically only found in areas with an abundance of magic. When most magic had disappeared, the sprites remained. And centuries ago, they gifted pure-hearted humans the ability to cast spells.
They're kind, calm, and wise. They're friendly but may be shy. Adults are typically found alone, but younglings tend to be in small groups of three or four. Adults are rare, as they tend to keep to themselves. But younglings are a bit more common, known to be playful and adventurous, often exploring magical areas.
Sea sprites either stay deep underwater or near land in shallow waters; they won't surface in the middle of the sea. They can be found in rock pools, caves, and shallow waters.
Forest sprites often live in dense areas of enchanted forests, though some adventurous younglings may go as far out as fields at the forest's edge. They can be found in ancient trees and bunches of flowers.
Sprites have no real form, constantly changing and shifting with their surroundings, often existing as part of it rather than as a separate tangible being. A sea sprite may “jump out of the water”, or rather, the water itself seems to jump, roughly taking on a wispy form. Forest sprites may take on a similar wispy form of pollen or fallen leaves, vaguely resembling the round shape of an animal. Sprites are luminescent - sea sprites glow blue and forest sprites glow green.
It's said that sprites don't die, but rather as they age they fade more into their surroundings, be that sea or forest. They become one with their environment, with nature, with magic. Sprites under 100 years old are classed as younglings; 100 to 5000 years are adults; and 5000+ are the ancients, the sprites who have become one with their surroundings.
Sightings of them are rare but not impossible. They're associated with ancient magic, mystery, and are often a sign that you're on the right path.
So they're not your classic sprite, but they are still magical fae-style beings. It was so hard to find pictures for them because they don't really have a form, but their appearance is inspired by Will-O-The-Wisps!
