PSA: Parents. Please do not emotionally manipulate your children.
They will grow up completely untrusting with a general sense of sadness and guilt.
Manipulation includes:
- “I just wish [something passive aggressive involving your child]”
- “You do whatever you want to do.” and then getting mad when they make the “wrong” choice
- Not believing them when they tell you something someone did or said to them, including their friends, your friends, family members, or even you
- Doing something shitty and then pretending you didn’t in hopes they’ll forget?
- Getting upset when they open up to you. About anything. Even if it’s something angering or disappointing. Don’t show them it’s dangerous or counterproductive to talk to you.
- Making them feel bad for the friends/significant others they choose, career path (or lack thereof), school choice (or lack thereof), gender/sexuality (or lack thereof) literally anything that either they didn’t choose or that they would be miserable without
- Do NOT EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES pressure them to talk to you about personal things.
- Kids do not owe their parents anything. They did not choose to be born. You chose to get pregnant/chose to carry to term/chose to raise a baby (even if you didn’t choose all of these things, you at least chose one) under the assumption that you would love this child no matter what.
YES. A million times yes. Kids want their parents to like them and approve of them, just like pitbulls trained to fight - they are trying to be a good listener and do what their parents want.
THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I WILL POST ALL MONTH, EASILY.
The Deaf community deserves entertainment. People who are hard of hearing want to give you views too! Caption videos, that’s all I gotta say.
missing you.
I find myself missing you a lot lately. It’s not because I thought our love was forever, or because I wanted it to be different. It’s because I didn’t. You surprised me, by loving me. Not because you felt obligated. It wasn’t messy or wrong feeling, it was real and it was sweet. And I think that’s why it still hurts, because it was something so good. So quick, and unexpected, and now it’s gone. I never even really had a chance to process it all. As usual, you overwhelm and amaze me. And I miss being able to see it firsthand, and know I was in on some secret club of all the people who get to witness your love firsthand. Even though you’re not gone, I miss you. A part of me always will.
I’ll be your Hero
Not a lot of people know this about me, but it’s been coming up more and more. I really love guitar hero. People don’t understand why though when I tell them that. It’s more than the game. It was my coping mechanism for a long time. I also really just like music.
The first time I played I was embarrassed because I wasn’t very good, but I liked the concept behind the game. I didn’t have the game, but then got it for Christmas. My parents soon divorced, and I didn’t realize how much that hurt me at the time, but it did. I felt really alone, and I couldn’t relate to kids around me who seemingly had pretty perfect families and were just generally different than me. So I played guitar hero, and I didn’t have to talk, and people didn’t bother me because it was obvious I was “busy”. I learned new songs and bands, I escaped my anxiety and my fears and just got better at the game. The game never told me it was going to leave me, or made empty promises, it just told me how many notes I performed correctly. It was mindless. It was what I needed.
I didn’t admit that I struggle with massive amounts of anxiety until last year, but guitar hero really helped to quiet all the irrational things I would worry about. It would ware me out so I could finally sleep. It would put things into perspective. If you can just look at the notes ahead of you and focus on the song ahead, it’s usually only about 3.5 minutes long, you can do anything. I could divide my time up into manageable slots, rather than trying to tackle the whole day all at once. It made me feel not so alone, and I still had goals you know. I know there are better things I could have dedicated my time to, and I did. I was pretty involved with a lot of other things in high school. But for that last year of middle school, I played a lot of guitar hero. And now I can be my own hero. When things get scary, or overwhelming, I know how to take care of myself.
