Last night the class got separated halfway through. People who were testing next weekend were doing a mock test. And the ones who weren't were doing one step. The only ones who weren't were me, my brother and 3 kids. An 8yr old white belt, 10yr old yellow belt and a 9th old orange belt. The white and yellow were little brother and big sister. When the Assistant instructor set us up for one step he asked the white belt which red belt he wanted to pair up with first. He chose me immediately. And his sister said "yeah he chose her because she always makes everyone smile!" I seriously felt my heart light up in my chest. Afterwards, the A.I split us up for forms. He had me help the yellow belt with hers and she was happy about it. Her nickname is Samurai and I told how cool it was and that I wish I had a nickname as cool as that, and she goes "hmmm...how about Savage Sabrina! Its perfect for you!". This girl made me laugh the whole time that the A.I had to seperate us. He took her and gave me the orange belt he was helping. As she was walking away, I heard her tell the A.I "She keeps making me laugh. She always makes me laugh". Its probably not a good thing that she wasn't being as serious as she should be with me. But even though I was bummed about not being able to pre-test next week and failing at breaking again that night, I dont think I ever felt so good after class before. I really enjoyed helping the lower belts more than usual. On my way home the assistant instructor texted me to thank me for helping with them.

My school had its annual tournament yesterday...

Scary part though: One of the assistant instructors in my class was competing in Grand Champions men’s division. His competition was younger than him (he’s 47) so he was worried that his endurance compared to them. As I was waiting to spar, I was watching him spar a guy who was 25 at most. He was doing okay, it was only the first round. I looked away for literally one second to watch the reds sparring and when I looked back, our guy was lying on the ground and his opponent was walking away from him. At first I thought he got winded and passed out when I heard someone behind me say “oh my god he got kicked in the neck!” My friend next to me said “I think he knocked out”. I felt like my heart stopped, I was so afraid for him. He started coming out of it and got up and sat down in the chair in his corner. The rules for Grand Champions were “Light-head-contact only”. This not only hit A in the neck, but at full force. It was enough to get him disqualified. One of the moms in our class called our teacher who was out of town for the weekend to tell him what happened. He is pissed and so is our master who wanted to know this kids name, teacher and institute. I’ve seen this kid at tournaments and seminars before. He always looks and acts like he doesn’t give a shit. He always keeps his hands down while sparring. After I was done, I went and talked with my Master. She told me that A was disoriented, couldn’t remember what day or month it was. After I got home I texted my teacher and asked him how A was, he said he was regaining his memory and was going to be okay. What do you do after this?

Its a very sad situation. Talk to the organization and express your concerns. Not much more can be done. Hopefully they will be talked too.

This is too late to help but if this happens at a tournament again, talk to the center judge immediately. Don’t wait until the end when trophies are being handed out – it will be mistake for sour grapes and you need justice. If you don’t feel you’re being listened to, ask to see the tournament organizer immediately don’t wait & don’t let them talk you out of it. And finally, it pains me to say this, but if you are female ask a male from your school to speak for you. Tournaments are still male dominated – the judges and coordinators are mostly guys. Don’t fight two battles at once; ask for help and stand your ground for your student/teammate.

Thankfully, mine and his Master is the the tournament director, so she’s on top of it and I’m pretty sure she has contacted that kids institute and master. I hope he won’t be aloud to compete in GC for awhile. He obviously can’t compete within the rules. I know accidents happen, but this guys attitude should be set as an example.

Update: My AI is doing okay and didn't have anymore problems after the fight. And the "kid" he was fighting? Turns out he's not 25 at most. He 32. 32! Holy fuck!
