I think we are focusing on the wrong thing when talking about mainstream romantasy adult books, instead of shaming straight cis women for reading kinky books, we should tralk about how most of the newer books aimed at that demographic are just conservative propoganda, rebranding patriarchy as a kink.
There's nothing inherently wrong about liking the types of kinks that are present, control, power imbalance, dark themes, but when you really look at the top performing novels (which they are mass prodicing at questionable speeds) it's hard to ignore the ever present morally grey man, who's posessive over the heroine who starts off as otherworldly different from the 'regular woman' aka damsel in distress), is cruel to everyone except her, and the fantasy world revolves around the control of women, especially when it comes to forced pregnancy.
I'm seeing a lot of responses to this saying "this is why I read queer stories" but you're missing the point! You can relate to queer media because you're queer, cis straight women should also have material that aren't turning their opression into kinks in almost every. single. book. If they want to choose to read those stories, that's absolutely fine, again nothing wrong with exploring those dynamics, but the concerning part is how fast they're being made with the rise of booktok, and the looming threat to women's autonomy.
Remember when all mlm stories were borderine assault stories in the early 90s-2000s? and how long it took for other queer stories to be made? we all used our voices to make a change, it didn't magically stop we fought for it to not be the only type of story.
And the solution to this, for people who are wondering, isn't to try to suppress romantasy books because they're not "good for women." That's an old, old game and never goes anywhere good. The solution is not less kink and less porn. The solution is more kink and more porn.
Because when you think about it, the problem isn't that you can go to your chosen bookseller and find a story where Sparklia Special gets semi-forced to have babies for Broody McDarkenfay (it's okay, she's into it). The problem is that it is unnecessarily difficult to look a little further down the shelf and find a vampire princess domming the hell out of the hunter who knows he shouldn't love her. Reducing people's choices always serves the reactionary agenda one way or another. Expanding choices. That's where it's at.
(If this sounds like I am making a pitch that we should write porn to defeat fascism, that'sā¦not entirely a mischaracterization. I mean, of course it won't defeat fascism, but I do feel that while we work to defeat fascism, we should at least have diverse and satisfying porn.)

we think pining is romantic because fidelity is romantic. the reason it pulls at our heartstrings is less the idea of a longing that can never be satisfied and more the idea of someone being faithful to their love even when theyāre not getting anything from it
I have seen a young lady with her table loaded with volumes loaded of fictitious trash, poring day after day and night after night over highly wrought scenes and skillfully portrayed pictures of romance, until her cheeks grew pale, her eyes became wild and reckless, and her mind wandered and was lost ā the light of intelligence passed behind a cloud, and her soul was forever benighted. She was insane, incurably insane from reading novels.

trees are very š„ŗ because sometimes iāll stand under the shade of a tree andĀ look up at it and itāll sway its branches about in the wind and iām like oh my God iām alive and YOUāRE alive. we are alive together and made up of the same starry stuff and standing right next to each other in this moment on this earth. do u feel it when i reach out and press my hand to your trunk? can you hear me? i think youāre so neat. and then the sunlight filters through its leaves just so and that lovely green color leaves me dazzled. itās just very nice to be an alive thing next to a different sort of alive thing
I couldnāt resist starting another Luminous once I saw this line of fabric. Itās called Color Collage by Shelley Davies from Northcott and itās been in the back of my mind for ages.
Iām using six colours in the piecing, which should make it 92āx109ā (unless I mess with the pattern even more and take one of the rows out completely) which will technically be a king size LOL The seventh colour pink is gonna be used on the binding so I get to use alllll the colours we had in stock in the shop š
Someone please stop me, I canāt stop making these fucking things lmao šššššš I had a plan to do something else but I couldnāt help it!
I did take one row out of the centre so there are only two red centre blocks instead of three. 109ā is too big for my queen bed, but I can work with 101ā LOL
Technically this will still fit a king at 92āx101ā, but I am a blanket hog and that feels like a really skinny king to me.
ALSO??
Because I altered the amount of rows (downsizing) but did not alter the amount of blocks I made, I ended up with just enough left over to make two matching pillow cases! They are even on point like the quilt.
Not as big as the greyscale king for my brother, but still. It feels big.
As you can see a little from the roll on the back of the long arm, I found a fun rainbow universe print to put on it with all the colours on the front.
Iām quilting the pillowcases too, though in a tighter pattern so they can handle more washing.
I love it so much. My favourite Luminous, I swear.
The pillow cases look so good too. As I mentioned, I quilted them much tighter than the quilt so they can be thrown in the wash a lot more. Same pattern, just smaller design.
Itās so busy, I could stare at it for hours finding things in the prints.
Also? I love the pink binding. I really did want to use every colour, so this was a nice compromise to having to resize everything LOL
The backing is also so busy LOL You can hide a lot of pet fur on both sides of this thing.
The pillowcases turned out great. I used the leftover from the backing to back the pillow cases so that everything matches. And theyāre envelope style so the pillows wonāt slip out. Hate it when the pillowcase slips off my pillow.
I had to sew three 45ā wide strips of fabric together for the backing to fit on the long arm. Since the quilt was only 101ā at its widest, I had a whole 30ā strip that was usable and perfect for this.

When Niall Horanās unmistakable Irish brogue rings out from the speakers of my computer, itās obvious heās in a cheery mood.
The former One Direction member has recently released his fourth studio album, Dinner Party (via Capitol Records), and while a certain buoyancy has been a motif of his musical output since the start of his solo career, his latest project is on another level. (Dinner Party riffs on Horanās relationship with his longtime girlfriend, Amelia Woolley, its title inspired by the way they first met.) Consider a song like āTastes So Goodā (on which Horan croons longingly, āCanāt take another breath without you / Canāt walk down the streetā) or āPrettyā (āBaby,ācanāt you see? Youāreāso fucking prettyā), a sort of spiritual successor to One Directionās breakout single āWhat Makes You Beautiful.ā But perhaps the most powerful moment on the album arrives with āEnd of an Era,ā a long-gestating, bittersweet ballad that Horan rewrote following the 2024 death of his former bandmate Liam Payne.
Here, Horan talks about writing love songs, his retro musical inspirations, and preparing to go on the road again.
Vogue: Listening to the album, you sound so in love. Did you know that was going to be the motif right off the bat?
At what point during their evolution did you play these songsāsome of which are very vulnerableāfor Amelia? Do you play her new music as youāre writing, or when itās all done and produced?
Yeah, good question. Well, on my last album, thereās songs on there about her, too, so this wasnāt her first rodeo in terms of that. But no matter who you are, I guess you donāt expect songs to be written about you, so I think it was a bit of a shock to the system in the first place for her, I would imagine. But I think sheās pretty happy about this album. Sheās been taking it in her stride, in typical fashion of hers. I have a studio in the basement, and Iāll go down and Iāll start something, and Iāll come up and Iāll play it. Sheāll give me constructive criticism, or sheāll tell me if she likes it or tell me if she doesnāt like it. Sheās never too harsh, but she understands this is what I do: I write songs. Thatās how I get my emotions across, I suppose, so she gets it completely. Sheās very nice to me if she doesnāt like a song and sheās nice to me if she does like a song.
I would imagine not everybody would be so open to that, and especially the result being so out there.
Yeah, I havenāt really dug into that with her. Sheās just of the understanding that thatās what I do for a living. Iām sure sometimes sheās just like, Oh my God. I have played songs to her and sheās been emotional, so itās a nice thing that we can have together, too.
Thereās a story about Billy Joel writing āNew York State of Mindā: he thought of the song while on a train and raced home to write it down, humming it to himself so it wouldnāt evaporate into the ether. Do you ever have moments of inspiration like that?
āNew York State of Mindā is one of my favorite songs of all time, so I feel you, Billy. For me, Iād say itās more so after the fact. When it came to the dinner party, I said, āWell, why not write a song about the thing that started it all?ā I just wrote down the words ādinner party,ā and it provoked a thought to keep that night in mind when I sit down and write a song and hear a musical vibe that makes me think, Oh, that kinda matches the emotion of that night. But they all can kinda come from everywhere. Iāll be humming something or Iāll be in a conversation with someone, and theyāll say something and Iāll have to walk out the room and make a voice note. āSorry to be rude, but I need to go and write this down!ā Then when I go to sit and write stuff, Iāll have a look back through my notes or my voice recordings.
One of the albumās most powerful songs is āEnd of an Era,ā which I understand is your reflection on your time with One Direction and the death of Liam Payne. Can you talk to me about the writing of that song and its evolution?
Yeah, Iād written that a while ago, and it had completely different lyrics but a similar melody. The original song was basically saying, āAlright, new chapter in my life.ā Looking back at the past with nostalgia, enjoying the present, and being excited about the future was basically the crux of it. But I never really hit the nail on the head with the lyrics, and it just kinda got parked in a Dropbox somewhere. I would attempt to write here and there and see if anything else would happen, but then, obviously, with the passing of Liam, it popped into my head. I was chatting with [producers] Julian Bunetta and John Ryan about it, and it was very much like: Oh my God, that song! If we just change a couple of things, itās really about Liam and his passing. We were talking about nostalgia and looking back at the past with these fun memories, but also being in the present and being sad. I think those were the two emotions we had to get across in the song and once we realized we were writing a song about Liam, the lyrics came in about, Iād say, 15 minutes. It was a very surreal thing to be doing. One minute you write a song about nostalgia and being excited for the future, and then something like that happens and youāre writing the same song but with a completely different meaning. Itās a weird thing to explain.
Sometimes a piece of writing waits for the right moment to really bloom. Iām assuming thatās what it feels like for you?
Yeah. I guess thereās a time for everything, and that song was waiting in the wings for me to write while grieving, I suppose. It definitely helped things. And I think itās huge for the fans also, since theyāve felt, obviously, a connection with Liam as well. I havenāt performed it in front of people yet, so itāll be an interesting thing. I donāt know how Iāll do or feel, but itās gonna happen and itāll be an amazing moment, Iād imagine.
Are there songs or lines that youāve left on the cutting-room floor because you felt like they revealed too much?
It feels like I probably used to do a little bit of that. I donāt think I do it as much anymore. I do think the best lyrics are the ones that first come to your head. If you overthink it, youāll never get the best stuff. If youāre trying to be artsy and creative about writing a line, it can nearly mess it up a little bit. Iām basically just trying to tell a story and I try to write quite conversational music if I can.
Iāve heard you say in the past that youāre an āold head, young shoulders type.ā Most people in your position can really buckle under the pressure, but you, in a comparable expression, seem to have a good head on your shoulders.
Yeah, I guess so. I donāt know. Maybe itās the way I was brought up. Thereās so many variables to it. I mean, itās not something that I think about. I just go along, you know? I kinda plod along and just be myself where I can be, and just be honest. I feel like Iāve heard it a thousand times, but [itās important to be] grateful for what I have. I mean, my life has been absolutely incredible for the last 16 years. We obviously have our own relative ups and downs, but Iām just kinda always happy to be anywhere. Happy to be doing what Iām doing. The places I get to go, the people I get to meetāI try not to take any of it for granted. I donāt think Iāve ever let it get to my head fully.
āOld head, young shouldersā could also describe your musical voice since the One Direction days. Youāve never really chased a super pop sound. When I listen to your music, it sounds modern, yet rooted in singer-songwriters of the past. Was that your sonic mission all along?
Yeah, thatās the stuff I grew up on. Your firsts are your firsts, you know? So when I go to pick up a guitarāthe type of chords I play, the strumming pattern that I play, the melodies I try to singāit all just kind of happens. But Iām very fortunate that was the music that I was brought up on; the classics that we all still listen to to this day. And a lot of those people are still playing stadiums worldwide. So I guess I got lucky in that sense having a love for ā60s, ā70s, ā80s music. When I go to make records, theyāre always my references. Like, how do I put my spin on this? How do I make a modern version of this song?
You have a global tour to support the album kicking off later this year. Do you do anything special to prepare for it?
Now that my promotional run is coming to an end, I will get into complete tour mode. Iām in the gym a bit now, but Iāve been having a few beers here and there, and Iāve been eating some bad food, but now itās time to start locking it in because Iāve got quite a big stage on this next tour. On the last tour, looking after myself, I just felt better, sang better, performed better. I had more energy. I feel like I really enjoyed the tour because of all of those things. I think that was one of the things I learned after turning 30.
why are scissors packaged the way they are itās like theyāre taunting us. Oh wow this is such a difficult awful packaging to get through that seems to cause physical damage to your hands as some sort of sick self defense mechanic, if only i had something to help get through it, something sharp perhaps
