A little appreciation post for Stephen Russell (VA of Nick Valentine/Codsworth/OG Thief's Garrett/Corvo Attano)
I started playing Fallout 4 and like Nick Valentine a lot, old news, but recently I've found myself drawn to Nick VA's, Mr. Stephen Russell's other voice acting works (especially Codsworth and the Mr. Handies) as well. He's downright iconic when it comes to video games voice work, but if you are nosy like me, have a bit of a crush on the man like me, and like me you just have to know what other artistic endeavours he has pursued, then well! Here we go!

A bit of a scroll ahead, with photos and links from Stephen's work in film, theater, and music. This is in no way a comprehensive post of all the non-video game works he has done, I just want to share what I've found here and there on the interweb, and might update with a section for his work in radio if I come across any. If you happen to know other works of his, feel free to comment/reblog.
Film
Mrs. Worthington's Party (also known as Noelle) (2007) (IMDb)
A Christmas drama film with religious themes but isn't too obnoxious about its religion aspect. The cast of bumbling but well-meaning smalltown folks served as comic relief and kept it watchable for me. Stephen played Bob, the more sensible member of that cast of characters.
The Golden Boys (2008) (IMDb)
A rom-com about old retired sea captains looking for a housewife. Not very comedic imho, but the film has a very specific setting (1900s Cape Cod) which it did well enough. Stephen appeared for a brief scene and spoke in seafarer lingo.
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009) (IMDb)
Another rom-com, which I actually watched before, back in middle school or so. It's a modern take on the Dickens' tale, neither particularly comedic nor corny, but Michael Douglas' performance was rather enjoyable, even as I rewatch it now. Stephen appeared for a brief minute in a minor role as a funeral minister/priest.
The Lightkeepers (2009) (IMDb)
Yet another rom-com taking place in, timpani rolls please, Cape Cod, 1900s. This one is about two lighthouse keepers who vowed on hating women having two sweet women thrusted into their lives. I find the film actually charming (though still not funny enough, sorry), the cast delivered, I liked Tom Wisdom's and Blythe Danner's performance. Stephen played a small role of a coachman.
Do you find yourself fond of sand dunes and salty air yet? How about quaint little villages here and there?

Aside from his appearances on stage, Stephen also has spent plenty of time on the other side of the curtain as a writer and director, among others: The Hound of the Baskervilles (2014) at Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater (WHAT) (reviews: 1 | 2). He's also the founder and "impresario" of WHAT For Kids!, writing and directing several original plays and adaptations for young audience over the course of many years.

The Trouble With Time (2023)
Stephen's "debut album of original songs", with music and text penned by himself, which he also provided the vocals and acoustic/classical guitar for. Link: SoundCloud | Apple Music.
The tracks are mostly country/folk, with a dash of bossa nova and Mexican influence here and there. I find the songwriting at times whimsical and witty, with a fair share of moments of tenderness, the production decent, and Stephen's vocals as well as guitar playing very pleasant.

Also found under a comment from his SoundCloud's profile: tapes from one of his earlier live performance as a duo act called "Marrowbones" at SUNY Geneseo Folk/Rock Festival II. The songs performed here were definitely more folk than country, his voice didn't have its distinctive rasp back then but imho fitting for such folk tunes.
Audiobook Narration
To the Finland Station (2024)
Stephen narrated the 1940 Edmund Wilson's book To the Finland Station: A Study in the Writing and Acting of History. I'm halfway through this book and I don't exactly have a strong opinion of it, though I shall chalk that up to personal taste and expectation. It's fairly entertaining as biographies of communist thinkers, just don't make the same mistake I did and expect anything on Marxist theory discussion, it's very insubstantial on that front. Stephen did a very good job narrating the book though. If blasting all Nick Valentine's and Codsworth's voicelines is not enough and you need more of his voice to be background music while you go about your day, I guess this works.

And on a sadder note, Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater has to close its doors this season, otherwise Stephen would have appeared in a re-run of Sacco & Vanzetti’s Divine Comedy. The play débuted summer last year to mixed reviews, The Boston Globe's review wasn't kind to the production, the humour sat better with The Cape Cod Chronicle and Provincetown News lauded the play and Stephen's performance pretty hard.
Something that wouldn't fit into any section above but I think it'd be fun to share. Every year since 2007 (almost) without fail Stephen has been hosting Yule for Fuel at WHAT, a Christmas entertainment program to raise funds for Lower Cape Outreach Council’s Fuel Assistance Program. The program has seen appearances from musicians, writers, performers from all around Cape Cod. During the lockdown in 2020 the usual performances couldn't take place and instead a virtual "archival" version was streamed during Christmas. Stephen and Christopher Ostrom, the artistic director of WHAT talked about the event on local radio: WOMR

I wish there were more recording of the events made public, the back and forth between Stephen and the performers on stage (and his singing/little stand up routines) sounds delightful, in this little skit he played the polite and flustered emcee to a tee. Hope WHAT or another organisation in Cape Cod will be able to pick up the program and keep the tradition going this year as well.

To be fair imagine you just arrived in 2018 from Victorian England and discovered Take On Me, what are you supposed to do, not blast it loud enough for your family to hear it all the way back in 1876?
i guess the other thing that bothers me is people have been woobifying (for lack of a better term) the games industry for a while now so theyre reacting to layoffs like big corpo is coming in all of a sudden and tearing these big "art families" apart and it just feels really out of touch with like. how all employers treat and have treated their employees in every industry forever. the entire working class is being squeezed, not just the people who make your entertainment. art fields aren't exempt from the same oppression that affects every other job. their roles weren't any less fraught when they worked under smaller studios. their livelihoods still depended on the whims of management and how much money their game made. can you wrap your head around how exploited these people have been since day fucking one of video games becoming a source of revenue. do you understand how far back this goes. people are out here making stunned posts like "i can't believe they think these artists and programmers are expendable" but like that's the entire thing though. the thing about the system we live under is that we as workers are treated as expendable. at the end of the day we are not people to capitalists, we are producers of capital and drains on capital, and that's it! there is no indie darling co-op games studio that will make that fact go away ajd if you need a utopian fantasy about optimal working conditions and being best friends with the guy who runs the studio in order to feel good about spending $60 for a video game then idk what to tell you. anyway idr where i was going with this other than now is as good a time as ever to start reading some marxist theory and also just paying more attention to workers' struggles everywhere. not just in the things you watch or play or that personally affect you.
