There are lots of reasons why fandom is "quieter" now than it used to be. Some theories are more compelling to me than others, and they all have a different scale of impact. We'll never know for sure, of course, but I like to think about it. Thus, this poll.

Of the list below, which reason do you find most compelling or do you think had the biggest impact?

New entrants to fandom don't know the old ways

fandom olds didn't teach the newcomers how to fandom

covid/surge in fandom due to quarantine and lockdowns

"antis" and other harassment campaigns against creators

creators posting complaints about comments (people worry about commenting wrong)

rise of discord popularity - fandom is walled off from each other

tumblr porn ban and other reasons people left the site

capitalism turning fandom into a passive "view and move on" commodity

rules from social media impacting fan culture (eg. don't comment on old posts)

general state of the world / burnout

social anxieties in an increasingly complex online culture

"surveillance state" worries and not wanting to be perceived

ftr even if "fandom olds" tried to teach newcomers "how to fandom", there's no guarantee whatsoever that the newcomers would listen... more like they'd tell the fandom oldsters to stfu

And why is it incumbent on the fandom oldsters to teach newcomers anyway? Every site has it's TOS, guidelines, etiquette rules, and site moderators - fandom newcomers already have everything they need to learn at their fingertips

But they already ignore all that/can't be bothered to read it

You really think advice from oldsters would be treated any differently? I seriously doubt it

#I'm never going to be on board with any suggestion that existing fandom people have to teach new ones #I find discord overwhelming and I am not online enough to keep up with the constant live stream of conversation #It is not like live journal You can't make a post and have comments underneath #hell at this point I would be willing to go to Reddit to get that forum post feel again #any discord I have visited has been an exercise and popping into a channel #being totally lost in some ongoing conversation that is going on #and then leaving #Even if you go back later you're never stepping in the same river twice It's so discombobulating
