Getting back on my Valvert box for a moment due to the relative lack of pregnant Valjean content compared to pregnant Javert. Footnote of course that pregnant Javert is good and holy but I would like some variety.
Which is why I want to introduce my Valvert AU fankid. Standard post-Seine procedure of getting together, they decide to have sex and Valjean reveals that he is intersex, which Javert accepts without reservation. No one, least of all Valjean, thought he could get pregnant, especially at his advanced age.
Eventually they have to explain it to Cosette and Marius, who are sworn to secrecy. They are surprised but take it as well as they took the rest of his past, and Cosette is even more encouraging of him to embrace what God has made him without shame. She even remarks it would be lovely if she has a child soon who will have a playmate in the family.
Valjean in all his typical Catholic Guilt worries he won’t be good enough for the baby. The prospect of being a parent again is in a way emotionally healing, but there are many concerns still. Javert, who is no longer a cop, is feeling all the remorse he has about being part of the system that made Valjean suffer tenfold, and fears he has nothing good or nurturing about him to offer the child. He may even fear becoming his own father, of leaving Valjean to be pregnant or raising their child alone whether by Javert’s will or against it. More immediately, he feels guilty for putting Valjean through the strain and pain of pregnancy and labor, after a lifetime of being a cog in the institution that brutalized his body. When Valjean sobs in the night thinking of Jeanne and her children who will never meet the child, Javert adds it to his list of sins he will never atone enough for, but damn it if he doesn’t die trying.
They get through it. With love and patience they get to the birth, aided by a discreet doctor and Cosette who is training as a nurse. Javert weeps holding the infant with wisps of his black hair and Valjean’s blue eyes. Valjean is frightened of the future and so desperately in love with the tiny child, amazed at how ready he is to reclaim the role of mother and father he had been to Cosette. And this time, he is assured that he is loved not only by a child ignorant of his history, but by people who know the whole of it and choose to love him anyway, because he has always been worthy of it.
To the public (and Gillenormand), Valjean has simply become even more of a recluse in his old age, before a baby dropped off at the church returned youth and energy to his years. Javert knows just what to name the boy; if he cannot call Valjean by his name to the world, then his flesh and blood will carry it, not as a burden but a gift.
