How do you sketch designs onto mugs beforehand without distorting the shapes?
Do you always carve through underglaze while the clay is leatherhard?
I sketch my designs out on paper and then press them into the clay through the paper with a pencil crayon (so I know where I’ve been over the lines already)
because the clay is leather hard, the pencil crayon leaves an impression wherever it presses through the paper. it can be fairly subtle, but gives me a guide to follow. and the paper wraps around mugs and bowls, so the design doesn’t get stretched or distorted
BUT keep in mind the shape of the piece! mugs generally aren’t a rectangular shape if you were to cut one and lay it out flat to draw a design on it: they’re usually an arch shape! but it’ll depend on the shape of your mug of course

and yes! leather hard is 100% the best time to carve. the carving tools get less worn down, you kick up a lot less dust, and the underglaze won’t flake away as you carve.
