Gay Comedies and Romantic-Comedies
4th man out - On his 24th birthday Adam decides to come out as gay to his three best (and straight) friends, Chris, Nick, and Ortu. The film follows them as they all navigate this new information and do their best to get their bro laid. Pretty funny in the way straight dudes are pretty funny.
Alex Strangelove - This Netflix Original follows Alex Truelove, a highschool senior with a girlfriend eager to take the next step in their relationship. Alex isn’t so confident. After meeting a charming gay kid at a party, Alex starts to question things he’s kept secret for awhile.
Blockers - probably one of the funniest movies on this list, Blockers follows the parents of three teenage girls who have all made a “sex pact” with each other, to lose their virginity on prom night. It’s a refreshing, queer, feminist take on a classic trope. All the parents make it their mission to stop them. One of the girls is a lesbian and her father only comes along to prevent her from being tricked into losing her virginity to “the wrong sex” aka a boy.
But I’m a Cheerleader - a lighthearted take on a very serious subject (especially in the late 90s when this was made) But I’m a Cheerleader is a campy comedy parody of conversion camps. After Megan’s boyfriend suspects her of being a lesbian and informs her parents, she’s shipped off to “True Directions,” a boot camp with the intent to set gay kids straight. While there she meets fellow lesbian Graham and hits it off with her. The entire aesthetic of this movie is very cool.
D.E.B.S - cheesy lesbian spy movie! An elite teenage spy falls for a criminal mastermind. Watching their story play out is like reading fanfiction, and its no cinematic masterpiece but its a cute, lighthearted, easy to watch film.
Edge of Seventeen - Set in 1984 Ohio, this comedy-drama film follows a teenage boy coming out during the same era gender-bending pop stars like Boy George and Annie Lennox were hitting the mainstream.
Handsome Devil - Irish sports comedy about a gay teenage boy who attends a boarding school full of rowdy straights obsessed with rugby. It had some genuinely funny moments and the exploration of homosexuality and the way its treated in Irish culture was very interesting.
Life Partners - A straight lawyer in her late twenties and her lesbian best friend undergo a dramatic shift in dynamic after one enters a serious relationship. This film chronicles love, relationships, and change.
Love, Simon - Based off the novel “Simon vs the homosapiens agenda” this film follows Simon Spier, a closeted gay 17 year old. He begins to fall for another mysterious, anonymous gay classmate he speaks to online.
The 10 year plan - honestly probably one of the most fanfiction-esque trope-y movies I’ve ever watched. It was cute and funny though and my greatest struggle was trying to tell the two leads apart from each other. The premise is that two gay best friends make an agreement to be with each other if they’re both still lonely and single in 10 years.
some actually good gay films to close out pride month
Some of my personal favorite queer movies! Image limit is 10 per post, but there’s some others I’ve really liked so I might make a pt. 2!
Alex Strangelove - (Available on Netflix as of 4/19.) Dir. by Craig Johnson, 2018. Teen Comedy following closeted queer high school senior, Alex Truelove. Alex is a straight A student with a perfectly nice longterm girlfriend but his world is flipped upside down when he meets the handsome, charming and out gay kid from the other side of town. This is one of the lighter films on this list, for when you need some feel-good vibes and a nice laugh.
Boy Erased - Dir. by Joel Edgerton, 2018. In this Drama Coming-of-age film based off the memoir by Garrard Conley, the son of a small town Baptist pastor is outed to his family and sent away to a conversion therapy program. While there, he struggles with understanding the twisted and often backwards logic of those leading them. Troye Sivan played a very interesting character in this! This is definitely one of the tearjerkers on this list and contains some pretty dark material (including rape, physical and emotional abuse, religiously motivated abuse, and suicide) but I still highly recc it if you’re in the right emotional place to handle that.
But I’m a Cheerleader - Dir. by Jamie Babbit and released in 2000, this teen Comedy is a satirical and light hearted take on a serious subject, conversion camps. It also features two beloved actors now known for their repeated playing of queer characters, Natasha Lyonne and Clea Duvall, as love interests. Highschooler Megan considers herself to be the typical prototype of an American teenage girl. She has a football playing boyfriend (who she doesn’t particularly enjoy kissing) and a group of fellow cheerleader friends (who she might look at a bit too often.) She’s shocked when one day the people in her life sit her down, accuse her of being a lesbian, and ship her off to “True Directions.”
Carol - (Available on Netflix as of 4/19.) Dir. by Todd Haynes and released in 2015, this period drama is based off the 1952 novel “The Price of Salt” or “Carol” by Patricia Highsmith. Therese Belivet meets Carol Aird in December 1952 while she’s looking for a doll for her daughter. Carol is going through a divorce, Therese is relunctant to get serious with her boyfriend. The two women become fast friends and their relationship quickly develops into something more. People have some pretty divided opinions on this one, but I enjoyed it. The cinematography was beautiful and its a nice film for when you want to sit back and immerse yourself in something. Parts of it made me cry, but for the most part it was just a relaxing experience that didn’t take much emotional energy or brain power. This movie is also the reason you see queer women thirsting after Cate Blanchett all the time.
Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Laga - (Available on Netflix as of 4/19.) This Hindi-language Coming of age comedy drama is directed by Shelly Chopra Dhar and stars both Sonam and Anil Kapoor. It tells the story of Sweety Chaudhary, a young closeted lesbian Punjabi woman, from childhood to present adulthood as she struggles to reconcile her sexuality with her family’s expectations and her culture. This! film! was! amazing! It’s what inspired me to make this list and I can’t reccomend it enough. I cried SO HARD. I laughed SO MUCH. It was such an enjoyable, cathartic, touching experience and its so important to support. It’s subtitled on Netflix in 5 language options (English, Spanish, French, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese).
Love, Simon - Dir. by Greg Berlanti and released in 2018. This comedy-drama follows closeted gay 17 year old Simon Spier as he begins interacting on the internet with and falling for an anonymous gay kid who goes to his school. This is probably one of the most popular queer films out there but I did watch and enjoy it and thought I would rec it anyways. It was genuinely so good! It’s another one of the lighter films on this list, and at times it had me simultaneously laughing and crying. Keiynan Lonsdale was cast as the love interest, is queer irl, and he makes some amazing music including his very gay single “Kiss the Boy.”
Moonlight - (Available on Amazon Prime Video as of 4/19.) Dir. by Barry Jenkins and released in 2016, this drama takes a look into three distinct chapters or stages in the life of Chiron, a young, queer black man growing up in Miami. It follows his journey to manhood as he’s guided by his family, friends, and community. Janelle Monae made her film debut in this!! i’m assuming most of you already know who she is, but if not: Janelle is pansexual and has been making some amazing, super immersive concept albums over the past decade. “Moonlight” is both the first LGBT-related film and the first film with an all-black cast to ever win an Oscar!!
Rafiki - Dir. by Wanuri Kahiu, premiered in 2018 at film festivals. Okay so I’m just gonna go ahead and admit I haven’t seen this personally yet because it hasn’t had it’s US wide release yet (but it’s slated for sometime in 2019!!!) and I can’t afford film festivals, but i already know from the trailer that it’s gonna be amazing and I’m gonna love it. “Rafiki” tells the story of Kena and Ziki, two young queer Kenyan girls, as they’re forced to choose between their personal truth and the desires of everyone around them. This was the first ever Kenyan film to be screened at Cannes Film Festival and was actually banned in Kenya.
The Handmaiden - (Available on Amazon Prime Video as of 4/19.) Loosely based off the novel “Fingersmith” by Sarah Waters this film was directed by Park Chan-wook and released in 2016. It’s primarily in Korean with some Japanese, and English subtitles are available. Ive seen it described as a “lesbian revenge thriller” before and thats pretty accurate. Set in 1930s Korea under Japanese occupation it tells the story of a orphaned pickpocket sent to relieve a wealthy lady of her inheritance.
The Miseducation of Cameron Post - dir. by Desiree Akhavan and based off the novel of the same name by Emily M. Danforth, this coming of age drama is set in the early 90s and follows teenager Cameron Post after she is outed as gay and sent away by her Aunt to “God’s Promise” a Christian gay conversion camp. While there she befriends Jane Fonda, a disabled lesbian raised on a hippie commune and Adam Red Eagle, a lakota two spirit whose father recently converted to Christianity.
Thought I’d share some of my favourite wlw movies, please feel free to add your own favourites and i’ll reblog them!!! Lets share the gay.
But i’m a cheerleader (1999)
This crazy satirical comedy is, as mentioned, a satirical comedy, but between the laughs it makes many comments on the ridiculousness of the society, the dangers of conversion therapy and the importance of accepting yourself. Natasha Lyonne and Clea DuVall play girlfriends that meet at conversion camp and RuPaul plays a camp leader with a “straight is great” shirt. What else do you need?
D.E.B.S. (2004)
This is the early 2000s bad but amazing queer comedy that i always wanted but took me way too long to find. D.E.B.S. is a clandestine paramilitary academy for girls that are recruited through a secret test in the SAT - they basically wear ridiculous outfits and live in a sorority house while working as spies for the US government. The star student finds herself in a romance with the number one bad guy, who in fact is not a guy but a girl played by Jordana Brewster. The movie is directed, written, edited and produced by women so extra points for that.
Children’s Hour (1961)
Two friends open a private school for girls and get accused of having an affair, which leads to parents taking their children away from the school and the women becoming societal outcasts. In the end the other woman admits to herself and to her friend that she in fact does have feelings for her friend. The movie does have an extremely tragic end (as all wlw themed movies in that time had to have), but works as a strong reminder of how far we’ve come, both in the society and in wlw movies.
The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018)
Set in the 90s, this movie shows how destructive conversion camps were, and still are. This movie is absolutely beautiful, my only critisism being that a disabled person is not played by a disabled person. Chloe Grace Moretz also got a lot of critique for playing a queer character, but SURPRISE she is queer and we all just assumed she wasn’t. Her queerness shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone after watching this movie tho, as she is convincing (and hot) as hell.
Imagine Me and You (2005)
The bride falls in love with the florist of her straight wedding. Cheating happens in this movie, but it’s actually handled very well and the husband is the most sympathetic man in wlw movie history. This movie is one of my all time favourites, it’s warm, cute, funny and very English. Also Lena Headey.
Mädchen in uniform (1958)
Set in the 1910s Germany, the movie is about an all girls strict boarding school in which almost everyone is in love with one of the teachers, Miss von Bernburg. The new student (played by the absolutely gorgeous Romy Schneider) falls especially deep for the teacher, declaring her love multiple times and even kissing her. The movie does not have the happiest of endings, but no one dies which was, i guess, progress.
Kyss mig/With every heartbeat (2011)
This beautiful Swedish movie takes the whole cheating thing to a new level, but it’s one of the most beautifully shot wlw movies with some of the most gorgeous shots in movie history. Many have probably seen some of the scenes of this movie on youtube, but i highly recommend watching the whole thing, as it has a great storyline and spoiler aller, a happy ending.
The world unseen (2007)
This movie is set in the 1950s South Africa during the apartheid, tackling racism, classism, sexism and homofobia all at once. It follows the love story Amina and Miriam, one of which is actively challenging the laws and regulations while the latter is scared to make any demands and follows all conventions. This movie has an almost exclusively POC cast and gives an interesting (even though depressing) glimpse at a place and time that deserves all the screen time it can get.
Anatomy of a love seen (2014)
Two actresses fall in love while playing a couple in a movie, break up in real life, and are called back to reshoot a love scene. This movie is very raw, full of feelings, great sex scenes and good chemistry. It does feel a bit like fanfiction coming to life, which i fully say as a positive thing. Maybe don’t watch this movie if you’ve just broken up, or just go for it if you feel like crying your eyes out.
Saving face (2004)
A surgeon and a dancer fall in love in New York, having to deal with the expectations and prejudges of their Chinese-American families. The early 2000s really knew how to make romcoms, since this movie has rightfully claimed its place as one of the classics.

How to deal with procrastination
One of the biggest problems for students is procrastination! It takes different forms for everyone but ultimately it stops us all at some point. Since there are several reasons for procrastinating, I’ve put together the five main types and a few ideas on how to deal with it.
You’ve got poor work/productivity habits. You leave things until the last minute since you “work better under pressure”. You probably think you’ll do something after you’ve finished something else, and then never do. You get distracted whenever you’re trying to study and will sit waiting to feel motivated but it never comes. For this I’d suggest:
create a productivity inspiring workspace - find somewhere that you can set up a study space, whether it is an actual office or just a desk. Organise everything that you will need. I have a selection of pens and my few notebooks on the top so I can easily access them. Remove anything that might cause you to be distracted and doesn’t need to be in your immediate reach. If you’re got space, put up some motivational pictures. This could be my motivational printables, some quotes or your own pictures. Plants are also proven to boost productivity, so might be worth putting a small one nearby!
create an action list rather than to-dos - write down a few manageable tasks that you need to do and be specific on the steps you should take. Writing the actions they require will help you see what you should be doing to complete something, instead of just the overall task. If you’re able to break it down, you can take actionable steps rather than mentally having to think of each point.
focus on 20-30 minute periods - generally, we lose focus after a while so taking regular breaks can help give you chance to relax and refocus. Apps like Forest allow you to set a timer and will give you off your phone at the same time. Obviously, if you’re being productive, don’t suddenly cut that off because it is “time for a break”. Here are some other free alternatives.
remove distractions as best you can - I’m always distracted by social media so I will use Forest on my phone or time-lapse myself so I can’t use my phone. With my MacBook, I have two accounts. One for university and one for everything else. I am not logged into any social media on my uni account so I can’t just check it for a minute then end up wasting 20 minutes :’-)
find an accountability partner - pick someone who you can rely on to check on you regularly and see how your tasks are coming along. You can send them your to-do list and then every few hours you can update them with your progress. You won’t want to let them down. Alternatively, you can study with a friend! Tumblr/Instagram is basically my partner!
use the two-minute rule - if something takes less than two minutes, do it. Don’t make an excuse, just do it. Tasks that are longer you can either delegate or defer. Here is a simple visualisation of what I mean.
record your progress - doing a simple “don’t break the chain” in your planner is a great way to see how productive you’re being and therefore get you more motivated to keep it up! The ‘100 days of productivity’ challenge might be worth doing!
use a printable - I have multiple printables that can help develop more proactive and healthy study habits. Free ones are available here and paid ones are available here! There are so many options to pick from that can suit you. Try them out, see what works and develop a system that works for you!
You’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Everything seems to be mounting up and nothing seems doable. You don’t know where or how to start. For this I’d suggest:
ask for help - if you’re feeling like this, it is likely you need some help in some form or another. See if a family member, friend, classmate or teacher (or Google) can help or give you a starting point. Emailing your teacher is a great option if you’re a little nervous about speaking to them in person. Plus you won’t forget what they told you because you’ll have a response.
remind yourself that getting started is the first step - you don’t need to finish a task in a matter of minutes. Start doing something small. Maybe organise what you need, highlight the important bits of your assessment, or draft an essay plan. The secret to getting ahead is getting started!
divide and conquer - figure out what is the overall task that you need to do and split it into manageable parts. For instance, with an essay, the aim is to write it! Divide it into planning out what you want to write, any references you need, summarising a final draft and then writing each paragraph. By dividing bigger tasks into actionable parts you can reduce the obstacles and get through each part in a more timely manner.
reward yourself - create a system to celebrate completing a selection of tasks. By rewarding your progress you’ll build an incentive to work and reinforce productivity (great for your self-discipline!).
learn to forgive yourself - if you have an off day, that is okay! When the stress of your education is getting too much, it is necessary to have time out. Remember to come back to it later and try again.
don’t over schedule - if you’re feeling pressure from the amount of work and then the added pressure of trying to stick to a time limit, you’re just going to go crazy. Set yourself flexible times to get something done instead of being heavily structured. Give yourself time for a break and the ability to change tasks.
stick with one task - it can be so tempting to multitask but try not to. Try to keep the focus on the what you’re doing until it is done. If you struggle with that, you could write down anything useful that you randomly think about for another task, use a break-time to think about that other task or alternate between subjects/tasks every few hours.
do smaller study sessions - there is no rule that several hour study sessions are the only way you can study. It frankly isn’t true and potentially doesn’t suit the majority of students. Try to study for 20 or 30 minute periods when you have the free time. Don’t feel discouraged or if you’re not doing it properly if you’re taking advantage of those smaller periods.
You’re a perfectionist. You either don’t want to start something out of fear you won’t get it right or you can get stuck on the small details. There is a pressure to achieve the unachievable. For this I’d suggest:
focus on getting started, instead of finishing - it is easy to get overwhelmed thinking about what something is supposed to be like finished if you’re a perfectionist. Take things one step at a time. It’s also useful to remember the sooner you start, the more time you’ll have to perfect it at the end!
make drafts - if you’re overwhelmed, take half an hour to map out your plan of attack. Drafts can take many forms: summaries, scaffolds/outlines, essay plans, post-it notes, etc. I find it much easier to get on with work if I have a bit of a plan.
remember that your perfectionist tendencies aren’t actually improving your work or productivity but hindering you - you’re continually setting yourself unrealistic objects and (like me) probably feel let down by yourself if you don’t reach them. Be realistic and focus on getting it done!
accept mistakes - you’ve written something wrong, don’t panic! Cross it out with a single line and move on. Things happen and you have to accept it. You can’t rip up the page every time you do something wrong, even if it is so tempting.
implement a new strategy - this isn’t always an option for everyone or every studying situation but perhaps try digital handwriting or typed notes. Digital handwriting allows for a similar system to be used for your notes but gives you more flexibility and an easier way to correct mistakes. You won’t be throwing out paper each time you make an error or use the wrong coloured pen. With typing, it is much easier to formulate and keep neat. These can be a great alternative if, like me, you find you’re spending time worrying about how neat it is.
put things in perspective - is what you’re beating yourself up about right now going to mean anything in a week, a month, a year? Be honest if it isn’t, is it really worth putting unnecessary pressure on yourself.
praise yourself through the process - try not to criticise yourself but recognise your progress.
don’t compare yourself - this is very hard not to do but remember we are all different. Just because “you’re not as good” or don’t understand something as easily as others, it doesn’t mean you’re any less! Everyone was a beginner once and we all learn at different paces. Work to your strengths!
You want to do something else. You find whatever you’re doing boring. You want it to be over with but don’t want to get started. The ultimate catch 22, right? For this I’d suggest:
remember that putting it off isn’t going to make it go away - if you leave it too long you’ll end up getting more stressed about it. Best to get it over with.
make a plan from the get-go - once you know something is coming up (e.g. a test, an assessment, etc) make notes on it! That could be questions, annotations, potential topics, citations, etc. By making the effort to spend time reading through, you’ll save your future self some stress. Especially if it’s a topic you have forgotten. That way your notes act as a reminder so you can get started.
set a finish time with a reward - tell yourself that if you finish something by a certain time and then you can do something else. Use your self-discipline to not go back on this. Set a realistic time and try to get it complete before. If you can think that you’re doing something fun once it is completed, you’ll be more motivated to get it done.
make a structure - for note-taking, it can be overwhelming looking at a textbook and thinking what you’re going to write out. Make a note-taking layout/colour code that works for you and that subject. Mine is here - it just gives me an idea of how I’d lay everything instead of going in with no action plan.
try to make it fun - this could be using YouTube to learn or starting a study group. Use different methods for memorising information such as flashcards, mindmaps or study guides (like question/answer).
make the effort to refocus - if you’re finding something boring and you’re unfocused, walk away for 5 minutes, get a drink and come back. If you’re really struggling, change topics for a while. Find a point where you can finish and start doing something else that is productive.
listen to some music - generally, music without lyrics are best for focusing. Spotify has a great playlist for studying called ‘focus’. However, I find my regular music good for getting me a little more motivated and awake. I also like writing essays to music because I weirdly sort of type in the same rhythm. Funny study hack I’ve found that works for me haha!
write your thoughts down - Another thing I’ve been trying is externalising my thoughts. If I get distracted by something or have a “gosh, I need to remember that” moment, I will write it down. By getting it out my brain and onto a bit of paper, I no longer have to think about it and can continue.
You have no motivation. Often we feel that motivation is the only thing you need to get on with something, but this isn’t totally true. You need a mix of motivation and discipline. As the saying goes: “motivation may get you started, but discipline keeps you going”. To build your motivation, I’d suggest:
have a mass organise - usually when I’m feeling unmotivated, I’ll clear out my desk and sort out my computer. This involves throwing out stationery that doesn’t work or scrap paper. I usually make piles of spare stationery and will re-organise my desk drawers. For my computer, I will pull out all my files to my desktop then start working through them. I’ll delete duplicates, rename files properly, and put them in the right place.
remember that action inspires motivation - the wonderful book that is ‘A Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck’ has the greatest chapter on motivation. A summary of it is action isn’t just the effect of motivation; it’s also the cause of it. We see motivation as ‘Emotional inspiration → Motivation → Desirable action’ when in reality this can perpetuate your attempts to find motivation. You need to change your mindset into ‘Action → Inspiration → Motivation’. This helps to develop an endless loop where you’re not relying on motivation to get you started.
find some new stationery - weirdly buying stationery is one of those things that instantly makes you want to be productive. Head to the shops and spend a little something on a new pen, highlighter or notebook!
film yourself - studying generally doesn’t give us any instant gratification which can make it feel like a drag. By filming yourself working you can get a little video at the end which shows your progress. I love watching time-lapses of myself because you see all the work you did super quickly. It also means I’m not touching my phone!
set yourself some goals - write down a few things you want to achieve, in the short or long term. Put it somewhere that you’ll be reminded about it! By externalising your goals, you’re more likely to make the effort to achieve it.
check/make a studygram and studyblr - this is one of most motivating this I’ve done. Having social media dedicated to studying has helped not only improve my work ethic but my whole attitude towards education. Getting involved in the community is a great motivator. Here is a post on how to set up a studyblr.
I hope this post gives you just a few ideas on how to tackle procrastination! If you’ve got any tips you’d like to share, please message me! x

‘eat the frog' method
Hi all, it’s werelivingarts. I just stumbled across this method called ‘eat the frog’, which means you get the most difficult or important task out of your way first. I actually have been using this method for a long time, hope this post gives you a new way of managing your time and productivity! 😜 ❤️
“If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And if it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.” – Mark Twain

Okay so I just got off the phone with them. I talked to a trans girl named Aurora & she was super helpful! She gave me a few doctors to talk to & encouraged me to seek therapy instead of just rushing to get my pills. She literally found a trans friendly therapist in my town & I would definitely recommend giving them a call!
GUYS COME SEE THIS!!!!!! I didn’t know about this, come look!!!!!!
it literally would not be right to ever not reblog this
For any trans followers I have. Stay safe and know you are loved
