Does anyone have any weird favorite smells that aren't just like gasoline or sharpie? I do like those but I want to dig deeper. I love the smell of frozen cardboard and brand new hardware
So far the replies on this seem to be either "old books and libraries.... Moss..... Rain..... I'm so weird I know" or "actual rotting garbage"
There is so much to be enraged about right now, and I am full of rage over all of it, but this is one story I haven't seen widely discussed. I wish I could say it surprised me. Of course it doesn't. Just one more drop of rage to add to the overflowing bucket.

A new anthology identifies frustration as a recurring theme in journals written between 1599 and 2015
Several months ago I bought a copy of the anthology referred to in the article above. Sarah Gristwood has compiled a selection of diary entries from over 100 women, going back as far as 1599. The entries are arranged, not by diarist or subject, and not chronologically in the usual sense, but covering every day of a calendar year. So I have decided to read it in the same manner, starting today with the entries for January 1st and finishing a year from now.
A very relatable entry for 4 January:
10 January... another BIG MOOD:
14 February: Louisa May Alcott on the happiness of spinsterhood
I realise it has been ages since I updated this post! So here is a selection of my favourite entries from the last six months:
13 March
Parts of this entry have been circulated widely on tumblr already. Even this is obviously not the full thing. I really must get hold of a copy of her diaries in full (or as much as has been published in any case).
Too right, Nella! Good for you!
16 March
I love this girl and her new pet alligator. I would kill for her.
21 April
28 April
1 May
Emma Thompson continues to be hilarious:
And I've reached the picture limit, so to be continued in the next reblog...
16 June
I want to kill Dr Binet with my bare hands.
8 July
Loran Hurnscot's account of her abortion should be required reading. It continues in subsequent entries.
9 July
25 July
I hope this tiny lesbian went on to have a happy life 🥲
Back to Loran Hurnscot:
29 July
12 August
21 August
P.S. Sadly it turned out Emily Pepys NOT a lesbian as she later talks about being in love with a boy. 🙁
And one more from Nella Last, who should also be required reading.
28 August
A few final gems:
This one just made me laugh!
14 October
4 December
I really appreciate the fact that Sarah Gristwood as editor has included multiple women's experiences with abortion.

Having watched 2 adaptations of A Christmas Carol today, I'm thinking someone ought to make a Scrooge tournament. A Scrooge Showdown. Battle of the Scrooges. Scroogemageddon.
I still think someone should put together an entire tournament of Scrooges, but here's a single poll, at least, with 12 Scrooges.
Who gave the best portrayal of Ebeneezer Scrooge?
Alastair Sim (A Christmas Carol 1951)
Albert Finney (Scrooge 1970)
Bill Murray (Scrooged 1988)
Christopher Plummer (The Man Who Invented Christmas 2017)
George C. Scott (A Christmas Carol 1984)
Guy Pearce (A Christmas Carol 2019)
Michael Caine (The Muppet Christmas Carol 1992)
Mr. Magoo (Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol 1962)
Patrick Stewart (A Christmas Carol 1999)
Reginald Owen (A Christmas Carol 1938)
Scrooge McDuck (Mickey's Christmas Carol 1983)
Will Ferrell (Spirited 2022)
Please don't get mad at me for not including your favorite Scrooge—there are like a hundred of them, that's why we need a whole tournament!
