I have a theory what if Aether exists it’s just moving at a significant fraction of the speed of light so like when the portal open it instantly moves away imperceptibly fast (you need to stay in the portal for a bit to go to the nether so that also applies for aether). In that case it would also fit the name “aether” since it means eternal and unchanging in Aristotelian cosmology (time dilation so aether would appear unchanging in the frame of the earth.
