The LGB Alliance includes gay and bi trans people you fucking idiot and they formed because gay and bi people in general were being pushed out of organizations like Stonewall UK by trans people. The LGB Alliance, as you say, does state that they âwelcome the support of anyone â gay, straight or transâ. However, they are, by their own admission, in opposition to policies on transgender rights such as those advocated at Stonewall. Iâm not here to say Stonewall is a faultless organisation, so letâs not get into that. Weâre talking about the LGB Alliance and all sources will be at the end.
The LGB Alliance are not just âa group for LGB peopleâ, but are actively opposed to trans rights. Now, I could cite all the instances where prominent LGBTQ+ groups, charities and individuals have declared the LGB Alliance actively transphobic, but letâs instead look at the receipts, shall we?
The Alliance has stated that it believes that transgender women cannot be lesbians.
They have stated that the right of LGB people to identify as same sex attracted is threatened by the existence of trans people in these spaces with these identities.
Cofounder of the alliance Bev Jackson stated that lesbians are in danger of extinction due to disproportionate focus on transgender issues in schools and that lesbians were no longer welcome in the LGBTQ+ world, which is complete nonsense.
The alliance opposes proposed legislation in Scottish Parliament to change the process of legal recognition of gender to be based only on self-identification rather than biological sex stating that it was âa law that could be exploited by predatory men who wish to hurt women and girlsâ.
They have stated that they are against gender reform and donât think gender identity should be discussed in schools.
The LGB Alliance is even, incredibly, critical of the campaign by other LGBT+ groups to make conversion therapy illegal, stating that the campaign is being used as political cover to promote an affirmation-only approach to gender identity.
If that wasnât bad enough, they actually think that affirmation-based therapy for transgender youth "is itself a form of conversion therapy" and has lobbied MPs to "stop transing the gay away".
They stated that they outright "reject the idea that there is a distinct category of "non-binary" or "gender-fluid" people."
Theyâre not even only harmful to trans and otherwise nonbinary individuals!
In June 2020, the Alliance said that it is not homophobic to oppose same sex marriage citing a statistic that most lesbian, gay and bisexual people are not married. They have since retracted the statement.
Thereâs nothing ostensibly wrong with groups existing for queer people that address the issues surrounding same-sex attraction (SSA) without focusing or really addressing the complexities of gender identity and trans identity (even though they are relevant to discussions within same sex attraction), but as part of primary objectives, I understand that as an idea and it is important that SSA gets discussed and that issues for cis queer people are properly addressed and their rights are given and respected. But you can do that without making trans people your villains and explicitly trying to impede their place in the movement for LGBTQ+ rights.
The LGB Alliance donât ignore or avoid trans and other gender issues, they think that addressing these issues has a negative impact on addressing SSA issues and that rights and discussion for trans people somehow mean that they have less rights and less space and that SSA issues cannot be properly addressed anymore, which is a viewpoint I, and many other queer people, disagree with.
If the people who started this group started it because, as you say, they were âpushed outâ by trans individuals, then maybe we need to address why people are feeling that way. It does not justify the creation of what is, frankly, a hate group that does very little to benefit the lives of anyone LGBTQ+, no matter which letters of the acronym they identify with.
Just because some trans people may be among their ranks doesnât mean that the group is doing anything to benefit them or even respect them. And just as trans-focused groups will have SSA people among them, so SSA-focused groups will have trans people among them, because they arenât mutually exclusive groups.
So why yâall wanna be trans-exclusive so bad? Just talk about SSA issues if thatâs what you really want to do. Why you gotta shit on trans people and gender identity issues to do that? You donât.
In conclusion: fuck the LGB Alliance :)
