Another background appreciation post today. This time, it's a GIF instead of a picture though!
This is what Maya sees when she's returning to the beehive after her first time outside. First it's just grass, but then slowly the castle where the hive is located comes into view.
I really liked the motion of this, which is why I included it as a GIF instead of individual pictures. When seeing this scene in the actual episode, it looked like Maya's POV while she's flying along the meadow towards the castle... but when this scene is isolated as a GIF, it's really noticeable how the picture with the grass is moving downwards to reveal the picture of the castle. And that looks so cool!
And also, as always, this scenery is so carefully drawn. Just look at all the details in the grass: at the bottom you can see the outlines of the different plants, and at the top it's just lines to vaguely show the grass blades. Which works really well to show that the bottom part is the one that's closer to the viewer, while the top part is more far away and therefore less visible!
How the hell does one draw this ant? π

This is my second (half-finished) animation I made in mid-November 2023.
I left "Sweet Little Bumblebee" unfinished because the animation file got corrupted.
Luckily, I was able to recover the file, but I lost all the other frames. *I had downloaded the frames before it happened.
It's time for another background picture!
After the last backgrounds which showcased the beauty of the meadow, this one shows the dangers as well:
Aside from all the pretty flowers that the bee want to visit, there are also spider's webs which they should stay very far away from... but as we can see here, pretty flowers and dangerous spider's webs exist side by side on the meadow.
I really like how the background is arranged her, with the spider's web on the left side, the flowers on the right side, and the twig in the middle seperating them. Even the sky looks different for both parts of the picture: behind the spider's web the sky is bright blue, and behind the flowers there's a big, fluffy, white cloud.
But still, the whole picture is drawn with such soft and pleasant colours, which makes both parts fit well together and also make this background so beautiful to look at. And even though the spider's web might be dangerous for bees and other insects... it's actually so beautiful too because of its carefully woven pattern!

It's hard to believe they're even the same character (but it's also amazing and funny that she can be depicted with so many different designs that are all technically correct)
OMG! I had not heard about that musical before! Thank you so much for introducing and honouring it with your comic!
The three puppets in the poster look so cute, that's some beautiful craftsmanship. The butterfly looks really pretty, and the ribbon Flip (or the grasshopper, because if the musical is based on the book, he might not be called Flip here?) is wearing is amazing. It's so big!
Kinda sad that Maya is hiding her antennae here, since the butterfly and the grasshopper do have them, but her design is still really pretty! That straight black hair gives her a totally different vibe, but it also fits her. I like how you connected the two Maya designs and I like the idea that anime!Maya dyed and straightened her hair to make it look like that! It makes me think of the scene kid Maya/emo Willy drawings by maruneko000.
And I also find it amazing that Maya can be depicted with so many designs! The designs where she is designed less like a realistic bee and a bit more like a human (like in the anime or in the musical) are always especially funny to look at XD
Last but not least, I love the comic you drew! I already said that I like the idea of Maya having a phase where she styled her hair like that, but I also like the idea of Willy reminding her of that phase afterwards XD And their expressions are so cute and funny! Willy looks so amused with his big eyes in the first panel, and Maya looks so suspicious of him with her narrowed eyes. The absolute shock in her face (and her antennae) in the second panel is also great!
Almost at the finish line!

going on a trip
After seeing the meadow landscape with many beautiful flowers last week, today we have some closer looks at the flowers Maya sees when she's on the meadow for the first time:
And we can see that they're just as beautiful from up close as they are from afar! I love it so much how detailed these flowers are drawn. There are stamen growing out of some of them, and some of them have special shapes like the lupines in the last picture.
Also, each flower has different colours or different tones of the same colour, either because its petals have multiple colours, or to show the light and shadows! Sometimes, you can even see all the careful brushstrokes which were used to create these flowers that look both so realistic and so magical.
