The thing about the slushy incident is that it likely wouldn't have had any real consequences/harm had Blaine not jumped in the way.

The Slushy hits him in the face as he dive in, meaning he's lower than he is standing. Add to that the fact that Kurt is taller than him by a few inches, the slushy would have likely landed chest height not face height.

But why the rock salt?

Simple, rock salt can damage a lot of fabrics, either permanently staining things like cotton, cracking leather, or stiffening silk. The Slushy was aimed at Kurt, not only Sebastian's active rival but also the one in New Directions that would be most upset at a damaged outfit.

Looking at it this way shows a part of Blaine and Kurt relationship issues long before they become issues. It brings in a pattern for Blaine that we see devolve their relationship, Blaine needs Kurt to be a damsel, someone for him to save and protect. We see that in Tested when he gets upset that Kurt is getting fitter and stronger. Kurt has been slushied before, hell he's slushied himself before, one more wouldn't have been the end of the world.
